ninadhu thiruvadi saththi mayiRkodi ninaivu karudhidu buddhi koduththida: (Oh Lord Muruga!) In
order that I obtain the knowledge to meditate on Your hallowed feet, Spear, Peacock and Rooster, (I
have to offer the following:)

niRaiya amudhusey muppazham appamu nigazhpAl thEn: sweet porridge in abundance, three kinds
of fruits, sweet rice-cake (appam), fresh milk, honey,

nediya vaLaimuRi ikkodu laddugam niRavil arisi paruppaval etpori: long, twisted and round snack
of fried rice (muRukku), sugarcane, sweetballs of lentil flour (laddu), colourful and bright rice,
pulses, sesame seeds, puffed rice,

nigaril inikadha likkani vargamum iLaneerum: matchless varieties of sweet plantain and tender
coconuts - all such offerings
manadhu magizhvodu thottaka raththu: are happily touched by those gracious hands;

oru magara chalanidhi vaiththathu dhikkara: His famous trunk once dipped* into the milky ocean
full of sharks;

vaLaru karimuga otRai maruppanai valamAga: He is Lord GaNapathi, with a prominent elephant-
face with a lone tusk; circumambulating Him,

maruvu malarpunai thoththira soRkodu: I wish to pay my obeisance by offering His favourite
flowers and praising Him with appropriate words of worship;

vaLarkai kuzhaipidi thoppaNa kuttodu: with my hands lifted up, holding my ears, I wish to bend
and offer my salutations after knocking with my knuckles either side of my forehead**;

vanasa paripura poRpadha arcchanai maRavEnE: I shall never forget to offer flowers at the lotus
feet of that Lord GaNapathi, wearing the anklets.

thenana thenathena theththena nappala siRiya aRupadha moyththudhi rappunal: There was gushing
blood on which swarmed little flies humming with the sound of "thenana thenathena theththena";

thiraLum uRusadhai piththani Nakkudal seRimULai: also there were a mass of flesh, intestines
filled with bile juices, scattered brain tissues,

seruma udharani rappu serukkudal: gaping stomachs with exposed livers and large intestines

niraiya aravani Raiththaka Laththidai: along with a series of loud noises in the battlefield;

thimidha thimithimi maththaLi dakkaigaL jega jE jE enave: the double-barrel drums made the noise
of "thimidha thimithimi"; the left-handed drums (called idakkai) sounded "jegajega jE";

thuguthugu thuththena oththugaL thudigaL idimiga voththu muzhakkida: the trumpets and the hand-
drums together made the thunderous noise of "thuguthugu thuththe";

dimuda dimudimu dittim naththavil ezhumOsai: the percussion instruments sounded like "dimuda
dimudimu dittim";

igali alagaigaL kaippaRai kottida: the devils who fought among themselves beat the drums with
their hands;

iraNa bayiRavi sutruna diththida: RaNa Bhairavi (Goddess of the Devils) in the battlefield danced
all around

edhiru nisichara raibeli ittaruL perumALE.: when You slaughtered all the confronting demons, Oh
Great One!

* When the milky ocean was churned for nectar, the axis -Mount Manthara- sank; to support it,
Lord VishNu assumed the form of a tortoise and held the axis. After the event, the tortoise became
arrogant and uncontrollable. The ocean rose wildly. To tame the tortoise, Lord SivA commanded
VinAyagA who overpowered VishNu's form and also drank the entire ocean through His trunk.

** Once, Sage Agasthya was doing a penance. VinAyagA took the form of a crow and playfully
tilted the sage's holy water jug from which River KAvEri emanated. As his penance was disrupted,
the sage was angry and looked at the crow which changed into a little Brahmin boy who began to
run. When the sage caught up with him, squeezed his ears and was about to hit his head with
knuckles, Lord GanEshA appeared. Realising this, Agasthya began to hit his own head with
knuckles. GanEshA stopped him and declared that whoever offers to hold one's own ears, bend
down before His shrine in obeisance and hit own forehead with one's knuckles will be blessed with
wisdom and true knowledge.
