Manager of Grassroots Government Activities

ASHRAEs Manager of Grassroots Government Activities tracks, monitors, and reports on regional- and chapter-level grassroots government activities of interest to ASHRAE members and to the Society as a whole. The incumbent assists members in promoting the adoption of ASHRAE standards in their respective communities, as well as encourages the advancement of public policies in alignment with official ASHRAE policy priorities. The incumbent serves as staff liaison to a new standing ASHRAE committee dedicated to member engagement with public policymakers. The incumbent participates in and, when appropriate, establishes coalitions within the building sectors government affairs community to further both collective and Society policy goals. The incumbent contributes written material to Society publications on government activities at the grassroots level and ASHRAE members engagement in these activities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1) a) b) c) d) e) f) Serve as staff liaison to the Grassroots Government Activities Committee (GGAC), which entails administrative, communications, and advisory duties, including, but not limited to: Composing minutes of committee meetings for committee member review, correction, and approval. Assisting committee leadership in the development of meeting agenda Assisting committee leadership in developing reports to the Societys Members Council, as requested. Working with committee leadership in coordinating and guiding efforts undertaken by the full committee and its other subcommittees. Advising GGAC members on strategic grassroots government matters, as appropriate. Managing committee records, including, but not limited to, financial and accounting documents; committee members requests for reimbursement; governing documents (e.g., Manual of Chapter of Operations, Rules of the Board); and committee proceedings and other materials specific to the committee. Tracking Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) point allocations as reported by GGAC Regional Vice Chairs (RVCs) and chapter GGAC chairs. Managing the Government Activities Award program. Working with the GGACs Communications Coordinator and other committee members in dissemination of GGAC-related communications, which could include, but not be limited to, GGAC-dedicated web pages; social media postings; and newsletters. Disseminating inquiries about GGAC to the appropriate RVC, chapter, chair, or the Society-level GGAC, as appropriate. Other duties as directed by the committee executive.

Research, track, and monitor the activities of state, local, and international legislative and regulatory bodies relative to their impact on ASHRAE members and the Societys interests, including, but not limited to, its standards, publications, and other programs. 3) Maintain knowledge of industry issues involving state, local, and international adoption of relevant codes and standards. 4) Manage ASHRAEs participation in relevant stakeholder coalitions that abet and leverage ASHRAEs public policy missions at the state, local, and international levels of government. 5) When appropriate, establish and lead such coalitions to address specific gaps in ASHRAEs public policy coverage. 6) Provide support for the operations of the Government Affairs Office, including, but not limited to: a) Establishing and maintaining open and transparent lines of communication with ASHRAE staff in all program areas. b) Assisting in the organization of regional, chapter, and section meetings and training sessions, when appropriate. 7) Perform other duties as requested, required, and appropriate. EDUCATION AND JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE Requirements 1) Bachelors degree preferably in public policy, public administration, or in a technical field (e.g., engineering) 2) Demonstrated experience of at least five years in and familiarity with the public policy process 3) Excellent oral and written communications skills and experience with public policy issues of interest to ASHRAE 4) Proven record of accomplishment in communicating complex information in understandable terms to non-policy experts Preferences 1) Experience of at least two years of experience with such processes beyond the U.S. federal government system (e.g., state, local, international). 2) Knowledge of U.S. standards development process. 3) Professional experience in trade associations or professional societies and working with members thereof 4) Interest in non-traditional communications including social media venues
