Our Stewart Stallions ran their hearts out last Wednesday, September 25th at the Gladys Burt Memorial Invitation Cross-Country Meet at Rideau District High School. What a gorgeous day for the event in Elgin with temperatures above 20 C. We had 61 grade 3 to 8 athletes who prepared for their races by training three days a week at school. The grade 3 runners had a 1300 m race, grade 4s ran 1500 m, grade 5/6 and grade 7/8 girls ran 2000 m, with the grade 7/8 boys running a bit further at 2300 m. The coaches, Mrs. Bell and Mme Lewis, were very impressed with the teams spirit, sportsmanship and place finishes. We had two first place finishes by Noah Sullivan and Andrew Machan, Brianna Fournier placed 4th and just missed receiving a metal, Ben Bellamy placed 7th and Sam Bourque finished 10th overall. We also had many runners with personal best times and record finishes. We received team awards for our Junior Boys, Senior Boys and Senior Girls teams. The top 6 girls and boys in each grade, from 4 to 8, will move onto the regional cross-country meet for Lanark County on October 23rd in Almonte. The top runners will then advance to the Upper Canada Cup in Brockville later this month.
