FIJI will be the data collection hub for a space mission to Mars by the Indian Government. An 18-member team of top scientists and engineers from India's International Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is in the country to pave the way for India's first-ever satellite mission to the Red Planet later this month. The $US69million ($F127.3m) Mars Orbiter Mission called Mangalyaan will be launched from India and scientists expect the rocket to enter space from somewhere high above Fiji's airspace or somewhere close. The mission will be monitored from Fiji and other parts of the South Pacific ocean. In an exclusive interview with this newspaper, ISRO scientist and project leader Mirza Mohammed Zaheer said one ship, which would monitor the tracking of the satellite, was in Fiji while another would arrive on Saturday. "We are sending a satellite to orbit towards the Mars planet so in that, the injection of the satellite will take place somewhere in the South Pacific ocean," Mr Zaheer said. "We will be going on the shipbound terminals and getting the data, transmitting to our launch centre from our ship and those data will be used for the satellite, further establishing the mission, doing the Mars capture and then start orbiting Mars." Mr Zaheer said the trajectory of the rocket would be over Fiji. "There are some technical perimeters which defines the trajectory. The duration will be 25 days." India's High Commissioner to Fiji Vinod Kumar said with the purpose of tracking, ISRO scientists and other concerned agencies would be in Fiji

He said the Indian Deep Space Network would perform the navigation and tracking operations of the mission while NASA Deep Space Network will provide support services during the non-visible period of the Indian Deep Space Network. Mr Kumar said ISRO would use its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Rocket with the objective to develop technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission. "Fiji has been chosen for its ideal location, being a communication hub and our close and friendly relations," he said. "We are thankful to the government of Fiji and other agencies for their support in this mission. Such visits contribute to strengthening our relations and would also be helpful in developing relations in the area of science and technology." He said the team would present the model rocket and satellite to President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. The Mars Orbiter Mission carries a thermal infra-red imaging spectrometer to map Mars' surface composition and mineralogy.

AN employee of a Fiji-based mining company was found dead in his room at the camp site last Friday. The media has been able to confirm that Dr Siddharth Krishna Naidu was contracted by Namosi Joint Venture as the company doctor. "The post-mortem examination had to be conducted first to ascertain cause of death considering it was an alleged suicide," Ms Naisoro said. "That has now been determined, so we released his body Monday." In a statement issued upon enquiry from this newspaper, the Namosi Joint Venture confirmed the man was one of its employees. "A Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) employee was regrettably found dead

"The family of the deceased has been notified and NJV has conveyed its condolences to the family." The statement did not address other queries, citing the sensitivity surrounding the case and the police investigation that had commenced. The Fiji Medical and Dental Secretariat listed Dr Naidu as a graduate from the MBBS program in 2000. He enrolled in the post-grad program and graduated with a Diploma in Applied Epidemiology in 2010 from the Fiji School of Medicine.

A LAUTOKA businessman has been left frustrated over the constant break-ins at his internet cafe over the past few months. Rarosi Internet Cafe owner Rajneel Singh said he had lost about $50,000 worth of computers and technical equipment from those daring robbery incidents. Mr Singh said the latest incident occurred in the early hours of last Sunday where thieves broke into the shop using crowbars. "I have a total of 28 PCs and when we came to the shop the next morning, we found only four left," he said. "They took everything from the monitors to the CPUs and those things are heavy so I'm guessing there was a group. They also stole Play

Station equipment and a large 29-inch television screen." He said in total, he lost about $30,000 in the robbery. "I've lodged my complaint with police and I do hope that they catch the thieves behind this robbery." Eu Commits 1.8M Euros To 2014 Elections

The European Union has committed an additional 1.8 million Euros (about $F4.5m) for Fijis preparations for the 2014 elections. European Commissions Deputy Director General for Development Cooperation (DEVCO), Marcus Cornaro made the announcement during the meeting with the Fiji Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama in Sigatoka. He stressed their support is for areas mutually agreed to with the Fijian government. Cornaro did not elaborate on the breakdown of this assistance, but in an earlier statement, the EU said their support will encompass technical assistance for the electoral process. In addition to Papua New Guineas grant of K25million (FJD$20.15million), Fiji has more than half the total amount, estimated at FJD$40million, needed to hold the planned one-day elections next year. The EU has also said it will resume bilateral aid programme with Fiji after the 2014 elections under its 11th EDF Programme for 2014-2010. Consultations are expected to begin next week in Suva in what is also the first high-level political dialogue between the EU and the Fiji Govt in seven years. The aim of the political dialogue will be for Fiji and the EU to discuss how the commitments would be updated with a view to agreeing them in the near future The EU delegation is expected to be led by the Director European Union External Action Service (EEAS), Gerhard Sabathil. Meanwhile, the EU has also allocated EURO30.665 million (FJD76.4174 million) to Fiji under the 2013 Accompanying Measures Support Programme for the Sugar Sector. He also provided Cornaro with an update on the current status of Fijis political and socio-economic development. The EU described recent developments in Fiji as positive and is hopeful that Fiji fulfills its promise to hold free and fair elections in 2014. The EU further said it was hopeful that it would be able to lift the Cotonou Article 96 special measures that restrict development assistance, which, if conditions are fulfilled, could be decided even before the end of the current extension. The due date for the special measures on Fiji which was only extended last month is set for March 2015.

FIJI Airways chief executive Stefan Pichler hopes to extend the relationship with part-owner Qantas as part of a fiveyear plan to revitalise the Nadi-based carrier. The airline code shares with Qantas, which was turfed off the former Air Pacific's airline's board by the Fijian government and has previously, said it wants to sell its 46 per cent stake in the airline. Mr Pichler said regardless of ownership issues, the commercial relationship between the two airlines was working well. "I think our relationship with Qantas is of future benefit - they make money out of it; we make money out of it," he said. "I think we can extend it. I'm talking with Alan (Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce) so at a certain point in time we can discuss that, to extend this partnership to mutual benefit." Mr Pichler expects to have a plan covering network, fleet, operational and product strategies in place by the end of the year. The Fijian carrier has already been through a rebranding from its old moniker of Air Pacific, which included fleet changes. It expects to take delivery of its second Airbus A330 on November 5, allowing the phasing out its last fuel-hungry Boeing 747. But Mr Pichler, an airline veteran who has worked for Virgin Blue, Lufthansa and who recently turned around Gulf carrier Jazeera Airways, wants to take the changes further as part of a fourpillar plan. This includes the rebranding and professionalizing management structures and services through a shift in the mindset of the organizations workers. The airline also aims to boost engagement with customers and provide job and career opportunities for locals. "For example, we are working on a pilot career, which starts at (regional carrier) Pacific Sun and leads up to the 330s at Fiji Airways so people can plan their career for a longer period of time within our group," he said. Mr Pichler said any changes would be made on the basis of keeping the airline profitable and self-funding, and he believed Fiji Airways could be a leading niche or boutique airline. Separately, low-cost carrier Scoot is believed to be close to confirming it will launch five-times weekly Boeing 777 services to Perth in December. Trade publication Travel Daily reported that the services were expected to launch on December 19.

Homes For Cyclone Victims

HABITAT for Humanity Fiji and expatriates from the New Zealand High Commission took a break from their busy schedule to assist in the construction of five homes at an informal settlement in Legalega, Nadi. Acting head of mission Mark Ramsden said he was happy to be part of the construction project that focused on providing shelter for families living in informal settlements who were affected by last year's Tropical Cyclone Evan. "I really consider this an honour because it gave us an opportunity to help a family that was generally affected by Cyclone Evan," Mr Ramsden said. "As we all know, the people in the Western Division were greatly affected in the disaster and the New Zealand High Commission wanted to help by providing funding for this project." He said the transitional shelters project by Habitat for Humanity Fiji was funded through the $2million NZAid assistance made by his government as part of its assistance to provide relief in the aftermath of the cyclone. "We gave $75,000 for the project and the money has been used to build a total of 120 homes on quite a few informal settlements in the Western Division." Habitat for Humanity Fiji director Masi Latianara said the five houses would add to a tally of 54 homes that had already been built. "We have still about 66 homes left to build," he said. "Our board of trustees are all out here volunteering to build the five houses. "We are very proud to be working with the NZ High Commission and their $75,000 has gone to funding the construction of the 120 homes in informal settlements."

Robin Surya Gets 12 Years

A FORMER senior tax assessor at the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and is only eligible for parole after serving 10 years. High Court judge Justice Paul Madigan convicted Robin Surya of one count of money laundering and sentenced him in a packed courtroom. The court heard that between March 1, 2008 and September 30, 2010, Surya deprived FRCA of $350,000 after falsifying tax return income and depositing the money into bank accounts of eight different people. The court heard that Surya would later tell the eight people, who became immunity witnesses during the trial, that "people owed him money but did not want his wife to know". The money was never recovered. In mitigation, Surya's lawyer Filimoni Vosarogo asked Justice Madigan to consider weekend detention or a suspended sentence since his client is 41 years old, has two young children and is remorseful for his actions. Justice Madigan said the fact that the money was never recovered ruled out any consideration for a suspended sentence or weekend detention. Justice Madigan said Surya was not remorseful because he still maintained that he never received any of the $350,000 and that one of the state witnesses known as Jimmy was the man behind the whole scam. "An unrepentant criminal cannot be said to be remorseful. And in addition to that, there has been not one shred of evidence of remorse on the part of the accused throughout the trial," Justice Madigan said. The court heard that Surya owned two flats, three taxis and used to own a nightclub. Mr Vosarogo told the court that the two flats mentioned is their family house, a property bought by Surya's father.

THE former employee of an island school facing 12 counts of gross indecency appeared for the first day of hearing before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili. The first two witnesses told the court of how the man they respected had invited them into his home before committing the alleged offence. The first state witness said in his examination-in-chief that he was a Form Five student at a secondary school on Kadavu at the time and knew the accused person as the bursar of the school. He said he was 18 at the time of the alleged offence. He said he remembered it was about 7pm on May 27, 2011, that the accused

called him. He recalled he was with his classmates inside a classroom watching movies because there was no classes on that day after Cyclone Thomas had hit Fiji. He said the accused approached him and asked him to accompany him to his home, a government quarters, within the school premises. The court heard that when they reached the accused person's home, the accused went to have his shower while he made the witness watch pornographic movie before he allegedly had sex with the witness. The witness said he was afraid and shocked when the accused told him to perform sexual acts on him.

The prices of fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) rose after the quarterly review of prices by the Fiji Commerce Commission. An additional 14 cents has been added to the kerosene price, an increase of 16 cents on diesel, an increase of 13 cents on motor spirit and an increase of 10 cents on premix. For LPG gases, the increase noted an additional 96 cents on a 4.5kg cylinder, $2.55 increase on a 12kg cylinder, 18 cents increase on bulk purchase and 12 cents increase on auto gas. At the announcement, commission chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy said the change in price was a result of changes in three variables the crude oil market movement, exchange rate movement and medium range tanker freight rate movement. On the crude oil world market movement, Dr Reddy said the increase was fuelled by: - The oncoming winter in the euro zone thus rising demand for oil products; - The strong regional demand from rise in economic activity in the Asian region, in particular Indonesia; - The rise in demand from developments in the Middle East; and - Supply disruptions out of political tensions in Egypt. He said the Fiji dollar depreciated by 2.61 per cent against the US dollar

Fuel Prices Up

during the third quarter of this year, which had a negative impact on local prices pushing it upwards. "We have benefitted from a small but significant decrease in freight rates, which has cushioned the full effect of the changes in crude oil price and the exchange rate." He said the combined effect resulted in the increase. Dr Reddy said the petroleum product prices were computed using the new Fiji fuel pricing template with revisions to all components in the fuel pricing structure. He said this was based on the submissions made by the three fuel companies and after independent research by the commission. Social Justice advocate and former 8 Wages Council chairman Father Kevin Barr believes the national minimum wage rate should be pegged at $4.85 per hour, more than twice the proposed rate, and in line with the poverty line. Father Barr applauded the initiative to set a minimum wage rate, but said it should be set at the poverty line minimum of $4.32 an hour which is equivalent to $194 a week. He said the new rate "is a good start because it will mean that those workers who are earning below that will actually get something". But he said a lot of the statistics used in the recent survey were outdated, and did not take into account the 2.5 per cent increase in vat, the 20 per cent dollar devaluation, and the 30 per cent increase in food prices. Dr Mahendra Reddy did a lot of good surveys and did some very positive work. But I mentioned it to him in the first round of the consultations in Suva that some stats he used to come up with the proposed $2.32 per hour rate were a bit out of date as he is basing it from the 2008-2009 Household Income and Expenditure Survey. A lot has happened since then. We have our currency which has devalued by 20 per cent, food prices have gone up by 30 per cent, building prices gone up by 29 per cent and VAT gone up by

Set Minimum Wage Rate To $4.32: Father Barr

2.5 per cent which means the workers buying power even with the proposed rate is still very weak. Two years ago, the poverty line was $184-$185 but given what has happened since, I estimate it to be somewhere around $194 for a family of two to three children. So as it is the proposed rate which equates to $104- 8 $105 for workers is still well below the poverty line. The other thing that we need to 8 remember that the history of setting wages have fallen far behind in the last few years. Wages have not kept up with the cost of living. He said employers need to realise that they cannot expect people to be productive unless they are meeting their basic needs. He added productivity should not only be defined and limited to human labour. If the workers are being paid below the poverty line, productivity is meaningless. Until we get wages to a decent level, we cannot expect workers to be productive. It also depends on other factors as well like capital, machinery that are being used, the environment of the work place and the culture of the company all that add or subtract from productivity. Father Barr said he has written to Dr Reddy on his thoughts on the proposed wage rate.

Local movie producer and director Rajnel Prasad finally breathed a sigh of relief as he embarked on his first ever major movie production. To him it is a sign of recognition for local movie producers and actors as he shares his dream with other aspiring Fijian movie makers, and he hopes his movie project would be the first of many movie projects by local movie makers. "As a filmmaker, I wish to set a platform to build the film industry in Fiji as this could be our major contributor to our economy, not only this, but it would give more opportunity to Fijians to enter the entertainment world of film," Prasad said. The important aspect of this movie project that excites Prasad, is the fact that apart from using local actors, he is going to model the project along the lines of a major movie production and he is going to use a local production crew. From the pre-production tasks of location scouting, casting, costume designing and cinematography, through to the production stages of camera work, props and make up, right down to the nitty gritty post production work inside the editing suites. "I believe in Fiji we have many talented people that (one day) we will have our own Bulawood and show the world what we have and showcase the beauty of Fiji," he said. All the actors who have been cast, as well as all the production crew will be paid for their efforts in this movie and this is one thing that Raj is happy about because it brings professionalism into the industry. The movie project is a collaboration between Prasad's Bright Future Films and the Fiji School of Medicine which is a short movie titled Giving Life which will be shot in the Education Entertainment Drama format. The movie aims to promote safe motherhood and will be based on good and proper parenting for expectant parents. A synopsis reveals the struggle of three women with their pregnancies in three different social settings and each

face three different consequences as pregnant mothers. "This script was taken to a few filmmakers in Fiji but no one could make such a film as it has very sensitive scenes, as this is most likely to be a medical drama type film. "This script was given to me last year and it took me a while to make my final decision. I think this film carries a strong message on safe motherhood and this film will take Fiji to another level in terms of local production," Prasad said. "Films are a very powerful medium and we thought what better way to educate prospective parents on the do's and donts to maintain a safe pregnancy." The script was co-written by Ashfaaq Khan and a former lecturer of Film and TV production Satish Rai who currently resides in Australia. A total of 12 actors have been cast in the movie some of them already well known media personalities while others are public figures "Few local talents that we will introduce soon and we have two famous couples that have a big name in public playing major roles and we have one special appearance of a local TV star," he adds. Behind the cameras Prasad will direct the movie and he will be ably assisted by John Tausere who will also be the chief editor. Kula Films award winner Limahl Totogi will be the cinematographer and the make-up artist will be Shazaiah Acraman with a team of designers like Sabrina. Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau will be designing costumes for the cast. The School of Medicine Dean Doctor Ian Rouse will be the executive producer as the institution is the one bankrolling this project. "I am happy that we have a good team that are well experienced in their field in this film, As the director and casting director, it took me a while to finalise all my final actors to play each role, as each and every role in this is passing a very strong message to our audience," Prasad said. The production is expected to begin soon.

Fuel Price A Concern For Low Income Earners

THE increase in the price of kerosene and gas means more sacrifice for a lot of people in the country. For Mere Sila, 24, she said they had been struggling with the price of kerosene every day and hoping it would drop sometime soon. "For us living in the settlement, it's very hard because we can't afford more for kerosene. Now the increase will make life more of a struggle for us," said Mrs Sila. While Muanivatu settlement in Vatuwaqa used to rely on the mangroves for firewood, she said this had been restricted and they also could not rely on it because of developments that have taken place there. "We used to cut them and sell it for our kerosene but it's no more. We don't have a choice now but to buy kerosene to meet our daily needs. Most of us here are unemployed." She said they would sacrifice most of their spending and save to buy a liter of kerosene. On behalf of the settlement, she pleaded to the government and the Commerce Commission of Fiji to revise the price to suit the financial status of people like them. Samabula resident Sanita Devi, said the price was high compared to their wages. "The wages are not going up and price of things are going up. People are poor and can't afford anymore," Mrs Devi said. "It's better that we go back to firewood because the increases are happening almost in every quarter of the year." The Consumer Council of Fiji called on consumers to be prudent in their spending. Council CEO Premila Kumar said the increases were expected given the fluctuations at the global level. With the rise in prices, Mrs Kumar said the council advised consumers to become more cautious in the way they spend their money to run their daily lives.

Fisheries Reiterates Warning On Turtle Ban

THE spawning season for sea turtles remain the same while their egg-laying period may differ in different locations around the country. Responding to a few coastal villagers' concern in the North on the issue, principal fisheries officer North Jovesa Naceva said this should not in any way conflict the ban already imposed on harvesting sea turtles. Mr Naceva said sea turtles' spawning period in Fiji started from September 1 to March 31. "Climate change has somewhat had an effect on the egg-laying periods of our sea turtles and some of them may lay eggs earlier before the spawning period or later on after the spawning period," he said. "However, this does not change the fact that people intending to kill or catch sea turtles cannot do so because it is illegal. "All approvals must come from the permanent secretary for fisheries." Mr Naceva has warned those thinking of taking advantage of the difference in turtle spawning and egg-laying periods to be wary. "Those caught harvesting or killing sea turtles without proper approval will be fined $500 or three months imprisonment. "On the other hand, those found exporting or selling any parts of sea turtles that are caught during the spawning period will be charged $2000 or five years imprisonment. "We want to clarify at this stage that the slaughter of sea turtles has to be approved by government and any more processes reached to achieve this are illegal."

The Fijian Governments plan for the revitalisation of the sugar industry has impressed Mauritius Sugar Minister, Satya Veyash Faugoo. Mr Faugoo, who is also the chairman of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Ministerial Group on Sugar, said the sugar sector was the linchpin in boosting the economy growth. He told Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama at the ACP sugar ministers meeting: We are pleased to note that the Government, under your wise leadership, has set up a strategic action plan with the aim of restoring the industrys competitiveness and securing its long term viability and sustainability. He also said the support of the ACP sugar family was with the Prime Minister and Fiji. We wish to take this opportunity to commend the bold and sustained efforts made by the Government of Fiji, under the wise and enlightened leadership of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, to chart an ambitious and an all- inclusive economic and political agenda for Fiji. With this roadmap and the new Constitution, we see every reason for the international community to accompany the Government of Fiji and

the Fijian population as they prepare to undertake these important changes, he said. The Sugar Meet Mr Faugoo also said the European Union quota abolition would lead to market instability and price volatility resulting in acute risks to ACP sugar producers. These would further undermine the guarantees on sugar trade preferences made to the ACP. He said that the removal of the sugar quota regime will seriously undermine the potential growth of the sugar sector in ACP countries. This, therefore, calls into question the EUs own policy coherence in relation to its trade and development objectives as underpinned in the Lisbon Treaty, the Cotonou Agreement and the Economic Partnership Agreement. These recent developments are a wake- up call to all of us that it cannot be business as usual. Status quo is simply not an option for the ACP. We have no choice than to change and adapt to the evolving global sugar environment, he said. At the end of this meet, the sugar ministers of ACP countries will table options on how to move forward in the absence of the sugar quota.

FIJI'S survival rate for breast cancer sits at around 30 to 40 per cent, according to the consultant anesthesia and consultant intensivist at the Suva Private Hospital, Dr Veneriki Raiwalui. And Dr Raiwalui notes the Ministry of Health always faces a challenge in increasing accessibility and coverage in screening women for breast cancer. But he said women should become aware of self-examination techniques. "Most patients present themselves at a later stage of disease, which is either terminal or where any therapy would be futile," Dr Raiwalui said. He said a much more organised and robust system in dealing with breast cancer contributed to the high survival rate in Australia. According to the website body and soul, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer in Australia is 89 per cent,

He also noted that the accused failed to express remorse and a clarification and that however ignorant he was of the English language, should have been aware of the law as most countries required the declaration of foreign currency. Speaking through a translator, Cao said he wanted to pay the fine and appeal the sentence, which he has been given 28 days to do so. Divisional Prosecuting Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anil Prasad requested that the accused be remanded in custody until the fine is paid, which was granted. Earlier in October, two other Chinese nationals were charged with failing to declare foreign currency. Fan Wang had failed to declare cash amounting to US$80,000, which was found by Customs agents at Nadi International Airport on September 27. She pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $5000. Shengjian Pang failed to declare FJ$10,000 in his luggage to Customs agents when he arrived at Nadi International Airport on October 6. He pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $2500.

making it one of the most survivable cancers in the long term. And breast cancer survivor USP Professor Virginia Tilley vouched for this saying people in Australia tend to have more faith in the medical system compared to Fiji. "In Fiji, it is a bit like 'you're going to the hospital, you're going to die' mentality," she said. Both Dr Raiwalui and Prof Tilley agree that ignorance is also a major issue. "Even on campus, I get misinformation sent to me. "They would say I don't need to worry about these drugs, just have lemon peel, or pawpaw," Prof Tilley said. CWM Hospital consultant general surgeon Josese Turagava has said that as much as 75 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer sought alternative treatment with traditional medicine.

Chinese National Fined $7500

A Chinese national has been remanded in custody and fined $7500 for failing to declare foreign currency, contrary to Section 32 (1) of the Financial Transaction Reporting Act No. 22 of 2004. Xinhua Cao was detained by Customs officials at Nadi International Airport last week while transiting to the Solomon Islands to see his three children. According to his summary of facts, the 48-year-old had failed to declare USD $10,712, AUD $1380, 1275 Papua New Guinea kina, 7800 Indonesian rupiah, $35,000 Japanese yen, and FJD $155. Also found in his possession were Chinese yuan, Hong Kong dollars, Solomon Islands, Singaporean and Korean currency. The monies were found upon Caos attempt to depart. He appeared before Magistrate Kashyapa Wickrama Sekara in the Nadi Magistrates Court and has been ordered to pay his fine from the monies seized. Magistrate Sekara said there were various cases of identical nature and the seriousness of the offense could not be undermined.

Prime Minister Launches Poppy Appeal

Attracting and retaining the best international talent to fill skills shortages in key occupations is critical to Canadas economic success.
- Hon. Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Employment and Social Development

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama urged Fijians to value the significance of the Poppy Appeal as he paid tribute to those ex-servicemen and women whose sacrifices are recognised through the appeal. Launching the 2013 Poppy Appeal, Prime Minister Bainimarama said that Fijians must wear the poppy with pride as Fiji joins the global commemoration of the Remembrance Day. My fellow Fijians, when you buy a poppy, you are buying a piece of history and a symbol of the sacrifices made by others to guarantee the life you have today, PM Bainimarama said. I call upon you all to support this appeal and whatever your age, to wear the poppy with pride. The head of government added that Fiji was proud of the Fijian servicemen

and women for their dedication and bravery and the honour that they have bestowed on the country. To all servicemen and women present here today both current and former the nation salutes you, PM Bainimarama said. You have our enduring respect and grateful thanks. We also renew our undertaking that Fiji will always be there to defend the cause of freedom, wherever that may be. Also present at the Poppy Appeal launch were members of the disciplined forces and members of the Ex-Servicemen Association. The public can access these poppy flowers at various organisations in the private and public sector and donate to the appeal.

Suva is the biggest promotions were conducting and if this one is a success, well be doing it as well for the Western division in major centers, Ms Tuinalase said. Matrix Holdings Limited promotions manager, Tavai Bale said the promotions was an ideal set up for OReillys as they were looking to celebrate a post Fiji Independence Day. Timely promotions OReillys is the subsidiary company of the Matrix Holdings. Its a coincidence that the launching took place at the time we were looking at doing something for Fiji Day, Ms Bale said. So far weve received very good turnout and the feedback from the customers are really good. I think the event was very strategically planned. On Saturdays we usually have close to 300 people fill the bar and its actually the best way to get our customers feedback on what the drink tastes like. And adding to the flavour and rhythm at the bar were local bands Rako Pasefika group and Qiri Kava.

Tremor Felt In Fiji

Some parts of Fiji felt the earth move under their feet last Sunday night at around 7.15pm. According to the EuropeanMediterranean Seismological Centre website the epicenter of the tremor was located 92 kilometres South-East of Suva measuring 5.1mb and was at a depth of 20km just off the island of Kadavu. A school teacher in Gau Island had posted on his facebook page that he felt the tremor as well. According to the Nadraki Weather there were no threats of a tsunami for Fiji. The Mineral Resources Department director Malakai Finau is advising the public that authorities including National Disaster Management Office are monitoring the situation assessing the extent of the tremors. However, they are advising members of the public to remain calm but at the same time to always be on alert. Any further updates will be communicated to the public via media outlets in the country.

Aries

You may expect a favourable week as far as your profession is concerned. You may be required to assist senior colleagues with important tasks of the company, something that is going to prove to be a very edifying experience for you. It shall not only give you immense job satisfaction, but even your prospects of making faster progress shall increase. Something unexpected could happen this week, so while planning make sure you arrange your activities in a very flexible way, leaving enough scope for making sudden changes, if required. Be careful of your financial situation, and take care not to spend on unnecessary things. Your domestic situation may throw up a problem or two, but you should take it easy and not lose your temper. It is just a passing phase.

all the good work that you have done, apart from even spoiling your rapport with your near and dear ones.

Cancer

Taurus

If you speak your mind bluntly this week, as is your tendency, it may prove to be counterproductive for you, so be very diplomatic and weigh your words very carefully before uttering them. Some people may inexplicably start behaving with you in an unusual manner. Try to sort out the matter with them to figure out the reason for it. Make every effort to be objective in your dealings with others. Work pressure on you is likely to increase, but not all of it is going to be boring; on the contrary, the work may be to your liking and you shall enjoy doing it. Businessmen are likely to get new opportunities to expand their operations, and if you are one, you need to grab such opportunities.

Leo

Since you happen to take things lightly, even when people specifically intend to take advantage of your soft nature, you may end up in hot soup for no fault of yours this week. This is something you shall have to rectify, and fast, because you cannot afford to let people keep taking you for granted all the time. No doubt, this shall take great effort and determination on your part, for changing certain inherent traits is never easy, but in your own interests it is high time you did. Businessmen are slated to do well, as most of your projects shall yield good profits. If you are a professional, you may face a bit of a financial crunch, so you need to take care not to spend recklessly.

may be making up for some negative karmas that you may have done in the past. In that case you need to be patient because results will start manifesting only after the past negative karmas are fully wiped off.

Libra

Gemini

Both in your personal and professional life, this week you are going to enjoy the fruits of your past good karmas. On the work front, your peers and superiors shall appreciate your dedication and sincerity to your job, and a promotion or an increment may quite likely be in the pipeline. And on the domestic front, your family members and relatives may feel indebted to you for the favours you have done for them in the past and they may now want to repay you in kind. However, no matter how cozy your relationships may seem to be at the moment, refrain from borrowing any money from anyone, as it can undo Ingredients 12 (about 1.8kg) chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2cm pieces 1 tbs finely grated fresh ginger 3 garlic c3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp Chinese five spice 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tbs rice wine vinegar 2 tbs sesame oil 2 tbs vegetable oil 1 bunch green shallots, ends trimmed,

You will need to be very flexible this week. You shall also have to try to be less opinionated, and more open to the views and opinions of other people around you, in order to maintain a good rapport with everyone. More important than anything else this week is that you must not expect everyone to be able to live up to your standards; people have their limitations and you must recognize them, and not push them beyond their breaking point. On the personal front, even if you feel that things are not going as per your wish, take things lightly and try to adjust to the prevailing circumstances. On the financial front, though you will not exactly face a crunch, you will neither be rolling in money. So, better to think twice before spending lavishly.

That this is going to be an extremely hectic week for you, both in your personal life as well as in your professional life. Since you are likely to be in a generous frame of mind, you may decide to render social service, perhaps by donating some money to a charitable organisation or by running errands for them. You need to make the best use of your vast experience by sharing it with others and offering guidance to people who may be either at a crossroad in their lives or may be going off-track. You may come across the misdeeds of people in your close circle, maybe even something that someone has done to harm you, but being of a forgiving nature, you shall let go and not take revenge. With the kind of positive and optimistic outlook that you have this week, even the toughest of jobs will be a breeze for you. And though against it what you cannot achieve by hook, you may decide to achieve by crook. However, in your personal relationships, especially with your prospective life-partner, you shall be honest and straightforward. You shall confide your deepest feelings to him/her and thereby receive their full support. At work you shall log in extra time, if you have to, in order to complete the heavy workload that you have been assigned this week. This is something that your family members may resent, so make sure that at least over the weekend you squeeze out some time for them.

for you. You also need to spend extra time with your loved ones, which will not only make them happier but also be a very refreshing change for you. Plan an outstation weekend trip with your spouse and children, as it will really rejuvenate you. You will see how playing with your kids can work wonders on your general outlook.

Capricorn

Scorpio

Monetary matters may cause you a great deal of anxiety this week. Even though you have set aside some money for emergencies, you shall feel that it may not be sufficient, and therefore you shall try to make extra provisions by shearing off unnecessary expenses. On the professional front, you are likely to feel somewhat dissatisfied this week, and may intensify your hunt for another job. Don't feel disheartened if you don't readily find another job, as it is likely to take some time, but rest assured you shall find one sooner or later. On the business front, it may become necessary to go in for modernization of your operations, not just to streamline things but also to stay up to date with industry standards.

Aquarius

Some days, you crave to know everything. Today is one such day. You will also prove a worthy opponent. You may upset your adversaries plans, much to your own advantage. You have it in you to be a scholar. You will also prove the strength of your character, especially when the going gets tough.

Pisces

Virgo

Despite the fact that you have been giving your 100 percent to your work, your superiors may not be too impressed as some negative event or the other tends to offset all the good work that you have been doing. Do some serious introspection to get to the bottom of your present circumstances to understand exactly why certain things are happening. Once you identify the reasons, it will become easier to overcome the problems or shortcomings, or perhaps the mistakes that you may unknowingly be making. There is also the possibility that you

Cover and place in fridge for 1 hour to marinate. Step 2 Drain the chicken and reserve the marinade. Heat one-quarter of the vegetable oil in a wok over high heat.

Chicken With Shallots Add the shallot and stir-fry

This week you shall feel bored with your work because nothing new seems to be happening, and going on repeating the same old things might induce thoughts of switching jobs. However, until another job offer comes along the way, you can try changing some things in your life by yourself. Perhaps you can start out on a new hobby, or perhaps you can enroll in a new course to enhance your knowledge base which can open up new avenues

You to be a little more ambitious and the first step in that direction is to make big plans and set yourself some lofty targets. This is the right time to justify the creative talents that people think you possess. Also, learn to take the praise and criticism with equal poise. You tend to handle praise quite well, but when it comes to taking criticism in your stride, you tend to fall short. You need to accept the fact that some people are going to criticize you no matter what you do, so don't let it affect your morale. Back at home, you may expect things to go smoothly this week. On the financial front, you may need to invest surplus funds wisely, so it would be better to consult some experts in the subject before taking any decisions.

Australian Man Falls Victim To International Investment And 'Money Wash' Scam
A West Australian man says he is devastated after losing $3 million in an online 'money wash' scam. Bryan, a 56-year-old mine worker from the South West town of Boyanup, who does not want his surname revealed, says he was promised he could make 32 million British pounds when he met the con men online four years ago. He says he was offered an investment opportunity to recover lost funds from the United Kingdom and set up various investments in Australia. He also paid for what the fraudsters said were a series of fees and taxes required to complete the deal which they claimed would result in a financial windfall. The scammers provided him with a credit card and set up a bogus account where he could withdraw small amounts of money from his $2 million investment. The scam involved washing expired bank notes that had been coated in a white substance with chemicals to turn them back into useable currency. Bryan says the scam escalated after meeting with the fraudsters in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai, where they demonstrated with expired bank notes the process. He says a case containing a safe full of dyed money could be converted if he invested $US80,000 to buy the special chemicals needed. The fraud usually involves notes that have been dyed black and the common chemicals used in the process can usually be purchased at a small price. Bryan says he felt "gutted" when he realised he had been conned after being contacted by WA Police and Consumer Protection. "Embarrassed" Bryan says he has lost $2 million and is $1 million in debt and feels stupid about getting conned. "Very silly, very embarrassed but as I said you know you are going to get people that are going to confront you and say you are a silly bastard, but if you don't stand up and talk about it to people the word is not going to get out there and others are going to get caught in a similar situation," he said. Bryan says the scam has cost him everything, just as he was about to retire. "Very big impact; I can't afford it. Just got caught up in something that definitely wasn't expected," he said. "I don't believe that I'm the only one that's being conned into this sort of thing, might be a higher amount, but I reckon there's others out there that are very similar. "These people are very, very clever and very, very good at what they do." Detective Senior Sergeant Dom Blackshaw of the Major Fraud Squad says the money wash fraud is a clever deception that has claimed many victims in the past. The criminals wash a small amount of real money that has been dyed and make their victims believe that the remainder of the coated money in the case is also real, when in fact it is mostly only worthless paper, he said. The offenders then demand a large amount of money to buy the chemicals to wash the remainder of the fake money and the fraud then escalates from there. This particular fraud was supported by sophisticated fake websites replicating legitimate investment banking companies and a bogus account gave the victim the impression he had control of his funds when he did not."

Man Charged For Allegedly Trying To Enter Buckingham Palace Armed With Knife

A man has been charged with trespass after he allegedly tried to get into Buckingham Palace armed with a knife. David Belmar, 44, of London, who was apprehended by one of the palace's gates, appeared before a London court on Tuesday, a police spokesman said. "The man was searched and found to be in possession of a knife, which was seized," Scotland Yard said in a statement. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the Queen was not in the building at the time and declined to comment further, saying it was a matter for the police. No-one was injured in the incident. The palace, which is open only at limited times to public visitors, was not open to the public on Monday. The arrest comes after a series of security incidents at Buckingham

Palace. In September, a man who scaled a fence to get into the palace was arrested on suspicion of burglary. A few days afterwards, with security on high alert, jittery royal protection officers challenged the Queen's third child Prince Andrew in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. In February, police used a taser to subdue a man waving large knives outside the palace. The most serious breach at the palace came in 1982, when unemployed man Michael Fagan got inside the Queen's private chambers while she was in bed. Fagan spent 10 minutes talking to the sovereign after climbing over the palace walls and up a drainpipe. She raised the alarm when Fagan asked for a cigarette.

Muslim clerics in Syria have issued a fatwa permitting people to eat cats, dogs and donkeys, as graphic new footage shows the effects of malnutrition on starving children caught up in the country's civil war. The ruling has been broadcast from mosques in besieged areas on the outskirts of Damascus. Much of the area is under the control of rebels, triggering daily bombardments from government forces trying to win it back. Government forces have also tried to block food and other relief supplies getting through. The clerics say it is a cry for help to the whole world, adding that if the situation continues to deteriorate the living could have to eat the dead. The drastic measure comes as Muslims around the world mark the Eid al-Adha holiday, sharing festive meals. For Muslims, Eid is a time for children to receive new clothes and play with friends after sharing a festive meal with their families. But in some areas of Damascus children have died from severe malnutrition and activists say food has all but run out and doctors lack the means to treat their patients. "Of course there is no Eid for the children here" in Moadamiyet al-Sham, a suburb south-west of Damascus, said activist Abu Malek. "For them, Eid will come when they

see a plate of rice and bulgur." Graphic video footage shows malnourished children dying Shocking amateur videos have been distributed by activists from the town, showing visibly malnourished children. One video shows a boy identified as Ibrahim Khalil laid out on a stretcher. His ribs and cheekbones protrude from underneath his pale skin, and he has dark circles surround his eyes. Another video shows a girl with her two baby siblings, appealing for help so her family can secure baby milk. "There is no road... The road is closed... What are we going to do?... We are feeding them milk but it's expired,"

says the little girl, as the babies cry. For some, relief came earlier this week, when the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent evacuated 3,500 people from Moadimayet al-Sham with the agreement of the authorities. But only children, women and old men were able to leave, with the wounded left behind and aid workers prevented from entering the area. "There are many more, including children, who remain in the town," said Magne Barth, head of the ICRC delegation in Syria. The situation is just as bad for children in other rebel-held areas near

The carcass of a massive, eel-like creature thought to have inspired tales of giant sea serpents has been found by a California marine instructor on a leisurely weekend snorkel. Catalina Island Marine Institute instructor Jasmine Santana spotted the 5.5-metre oarfish, which is as thick as a man's torso, while snorkelling in clear waters off the island's coast on Sunday afternoon, the institute said. Oarfish are found in all temperate to tropical waters, but because they dive to depths of almost one kilometre they are rarely seen, and remain largely unstudied. Little is known about their behaviour, the non-profit educational institute said. "Jasmine Santana was shocked to see (a) half-dollar sized eye staring at her from the sandy bottom," the institute said in a statement. "Her first reaction was to approach with caution, until she realised that it was dead." Oarfish have a crest running the length of their bodies and a skeleton of bone rather than cartilage common to fish species like sharks. They can grow up to a length of 17 metres. Because of their strange appearance, they are believed to have inspired legends of giant sea serpents.

Damascus. "Many children have very low blood pressure, fatigue, dizziness, and a reduced (disease-fighting) white blood cell count. The worst affected by the food shortages are children aged under two years," he added. Residents survive by planting herbs, vegetables In Moadamiyet al-Sham, people are surviving on herbs and vegetables they have planted. "We no longer have any food in the stockpiles. Everyone is planting in the orchards and the streets," said activist Abu Hadi, adding that no bread had entered the area for months. But harvesting the food is dangerous, "and people have died in the orchards because of the shelling", he said. Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said many children in Moadamiyet alSham are malnourished. "Children are worst off because they need the right kinds of food in order to grow. Adults can survive on whatever they can find, but what about the children?" The army says "terrorists," its term for the rebels, have trapped civilians against their will. But activists accuse the military of using the siege to try to turn people against the rebels. "It is a war crime to besiege civilians," Abdel Rahman said.

It took a group of 15 adults to pull the fish's massive carcass up the beach to a better viewing area, the institute said. Its longest serving employee, Mark Johnson, could not believe his eyes. "In 32 years here I have never seen anything like this," he said. The body of the fish appeared almost perfectly intact. The institute sent tissue samples and video footage to a University of California fish expert, and is awaiting a final determination on the species. A spokesman for Guided Discoveries, the educational non-profit which operates programs on Catalina Island, says the sea creature's skeleton will likely be put on display for visitors.

At least 91 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede after a bridge collapsed near a remote Hindu temple in India. A large number of devotees gathered to celebrate the holy festival of Dussehra at the Ratangarh temple, in a forest outside the town of Datia, 390 kilometres north of the state capital, Bhopal. But a bridge leading to the temple collapsed, triggering the stampede. "The death toll has risen to 91 and 10 others are in a critical condition," Dilip Arya, a deputy inspector general of police, said. Mr Arya had earlier said a further 100 people were being treated for injuries in nearby hospitals. As the bridge collapsed, people began rushing towards the temple and were killed in the stampede, Mr Arya said, adding that a few devotees drowned as they jumped into the Sindh river. Police charged at crowds with batons: reports

Scores Dead As Bridge Collapses Near Hindu Temple During Holy Dussehra Festival In India
Some local media said the police used batons to control the crowd, prompting many people to panic. NDTV, an Indian television network, cited sources at the scene as saying the situation was exacerbated by police charging at the crowds with heavy wooden sticks known as lathis. However, Mr Arya insisted "there was no baton-charge" by the police. The Times of India reported that crowds could be seen pelting police with stones as frustration grew over the rescue operation. In February this year, a stampede killed at least 36 Hindu pilgrims, who were part of the world's largest religious festival, which attracted some 30 million people. Some 102 Hindu devotees were killed in a stampede in January 2011 in the state of Kerala while 224 pilgrims died in September 2008 as thousands of worshippers rushed to reach a 15thcentury hill-top temple in Jodhpur.

Injured Kangaroo Hops Into Australian Airport Pharmacy

A Basildon Hospital nurse faces misconduct charges for allegedly using a colleague to run personal errands while on duty. Abiola Olukemi Apara is accused of asking a clinical support worker to mow her lawn, take her car to get an MOT and drive her to IKEA at Lakeside. It is also alleged she instructed another male member of staff to call in sick and drive her to London and back. The Nursing and Midwifery Council is due to hear the case in January. In total, Ms Apara, who worked on the Lionel Cousins ward, faces seven misconduct charges stemming from 2004 to 2007. 'Washing machine fitted' It is alleged she asked the clinical support worker to do nine tasks for

her, including fixing broken locks and leaking taps at her home. Ms Apara is also alleged to have asked him to install her new washing machine, fit new lights and put sealant around her bath. She is also accused of asking a nurse for a reference for her daughter, whom she had not met and did not know, and of shouting at her in front of a patient she was washing. The Conduct and Competence Committee is also due to hear a charge that Ms Apara did not speak to a ward sister for about five weeks and instead left notes for her in the staff room. She also behaved inappropriately to the ward hostess, it is alleged, by shouting at her and not speaking to her for about 17 weeks.

An injured kangaroo hopped into an airport in Australias secondlargest city on Wednesday, perplexing passengers as it made its way into a terminal shop. Airport officials arent entirely sure how the kangaroo got into the Qantas Airways domestic terminal, Melbourne Airport spokeswoman Anna Gillett said. But once inside, the marsupial which had been hit by a vehicle at a nearby intersection and was bleeding

made its way into a pharmacy. Shop workers, Qantas staff and federal police contained the kangaroo in the pharmacy for a couple hours before wildlife officers arrived. Two rescue volunteers tranquilized the animal and took it to a vet for treatment, Wildlife Victoria said in a statement. This isnt the first time a kangaroo has paid a visit to Melbourne Airport. Last year, a roo was found bouncing around in one of the airports parking garages.

Malaysian Court Rules Use Of 'Allah' Exclusive To Muslims

A Malaysian court has ruled that a Christian newspaper cannot use the word "Allah" to refer to God. The unanimous decision, by three Muslim judges in the appeals court, overturned a 2009 ruling by a lower court that allowed the Malay language version of the newspaper, The Herald, to use the word "Allah". "The usage of the word Allah is not an integral part of the faith in Christianity," chief judge Mohamed Apandi Ali said. "The usage of the word will cause confusion in the community." The decision coincides with heightened ethnic and religious tensions in Malaysia after a polarising May election. During the election, the long-ruling coalition was deserted by urban voters, including a large section of minority ethnic Chinese. In recent months, Prime Minister Najib Razak has sought to consolidate his support among majority ethnic Malays, who are Muslim by law. He has also sought to secure the backing of traditionalists ahead of a crucial ruling party assembly this month. His new government, dominated by his Malay-based United Malays National Organisation, has toughened security laws and introduced steps to boost a decades-old affirmative action policy for ethnic Malays. It has reversed liberal reforms aimed at appealing to a broader section of multiethnic Malaysia. In its case, the government argued the word "Allah" was specific to Muslims and the then-home minister's decision in 2008 to deny the newspaper permission to print it was justified on the basis of public order. Lawyers for the Catholic paper had argued the word "Allah" predates Islam and had been used extensively by Malay-speaking Christians in Malaysia's part of Borneo Island for centuries. They say they will appeal against today's decision to Malaysia's highest court. Christians in Indonesia and much of the Arab world continue to use the word without opposition from Islamic authorities. Churches in the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak have said they will continue to use the word regardless of the ruling. The paper won a judicial review of the home minister's decision in 2009, triggering an appeal from the federal government. Ethnic Malays make up 60 per cent of Malaysia's 28 million people, with Chinese accounting for more than a quarter and ethnic Indians also forming a substantial minority. Christians account for around 9 per cent.

Healthy fast food at home All you have to do is plan a little in advance. Get your calendar out and chalk down your food needs a week early. Prepare a quick list and consider stocking these food items in your fridge: Low-fat cheese with brown bread or a plate/tiffin of salad. Cartons of fresh yoghurt. Sliced fruits which can be packed in sealed, easy to handle, containers. Go for fruits such as pears, grapes, apples and bananas as they are easy to carry. Pack a container of vegetables such as cherry tomatoes and baby carrots along with a low fat homemade dip. You can always add a dash of oregano or mixed herb to the dip to give you that extra flavour. Go for cans or cups of fruit which are packed in their own juice. A well-sized peanut butter tube to go with bread or soup sticks. When on the road, plan to take a break at a supermarket instead of a fast-food joint. Whole-grain breads, cereals and pasta. Eggs, canned beans, peanut butter, milk, reduced-fat shredded cheese, chicken, meatballs, beef patties and canned tuna. Fresh vegetables, fresh/dry fruits and fruits (if canned, then make sure it's in their own juice). Brown rice and whole-wheat couscous which is easy to cook. Tips to pull your healthy fast food act together Spend a couple of hours extra on cooking main course dishes and make double batches of anything you cook, and freeze half of it. Youll save time on cooking automatically! Are you someone who can easily give in to beef burger patties or veggie burgers? Opt for whole grain buns and pair them with cooked frozen peas and carrot. Also, a steamed meat burger patty or even a grilled meat patty is always healthier than junk food burgers at restaurants. Combine your meal with a glass of milk or a piece of fruit. This works as an excellent fast-food alternative. Frozen tuna mixed with reducedfat cheese works as a great spread over whole-wheat bread or salad. Got left over cooked vegetables from last nights dinner? Stir them in a hot pan and serve them with whole-grain rolls. Got half a dozen of eggs? Hard cook them. Toss them in a bowl of cabbage, baby tomatoes, carrots and boiled spinach. This grab-andgo snack is an excellent alternative to your fat-filled take away meals. Fast food choices Planning to have fast food today? Try these healthy options: - Grill your food instead of frying. - Control the portion of food. - Choose a restaurant that has healthy dishes in the menu. - Fill yourself with salads and appetizers. - Keep a tab on your drinking. - Try a healthy dip ditch the cheese for tomato sauce or mustard. - Avoid buffet and all you can eat places. Weight loss diet tips - Eat less. - Drink a glass of water before eating. - Serve yourself in the kitchen. - Taste the food. - Have fruits. - Snack on proteins. - Stay away from food trigger Simply means if you eat when you are sad and depressed. then find a different way to de-stress. Avoid over eating This is the best thing you can do avoid over eating. Buffets, all you can eat meals, eating with dishes at the table and going for dinner to places that serve large portions of food should be avoided if you are trying to lose weight. These are some tips to stop overeating: - Watch portions. - Chew your food. - Keep unhealthy snacks out of sight. - Avoid eating straight from the container. Know the difference between good and bad carbs, fats Dont cut out an entire food group altogether just because you are on a diet. That is neither sustainable nor healthy. Carbs and fats in the right portions are essential to a well-rounded diet. Fat is high in calories, but being so nutritionally dense, its a smart source of fuel. Just know your good fats from the bad ones. Daily exercise Remember, if you can watch TV at night then you can definitely make the time to go for a walk. Evening walks, gym workouts, swimming sessions, yoga classes over weekends are just some of the activities that are not too hard to commit to. The idea is to keep moving and to use those muscles before the body starts getting stubborn. The flu season is upon us, and doctors are reminding everyone to get their annual flu shot. The first supply of vaccines has arrived, and this year, health officials in B.C. are hoping to make things a little less traumatic for younger children by offering an alternative to the needle. The nasal spray influenza vaccine is recommended for children aged two to 17-years old. Vancouver Coastal Health was the only health authority that offered flu mist as a trial last season. The nasal vaccine was chosen by the majority of parents over the traditional flu shot and was preferred by health officials because of how easy it is to administer. Another novelty this year is that people visiting health care facilities are now eligible for free influenza vaccine. Last year, there was a requirement for doctors, staff, students and volunteers to get immunized or wear a mask while at work during the influenza season. We had a huge increase in the

vaccination rate among health care workers, says medical health officer Dr. Meena Dawar. It went up to about 80 per cent, which is great. We never see such high vaccination rate among health care workers. We just wanted to build on that policy by also preventing influenza in visitors. Influenza vaccine is recommended for everybody and is provided for free to those at high risk of influenza complications those in contact with people at high risk (including health care workers), and essential community service providers. People at high risk of influenza complications include children 6 months to 5 years old, pregnant women, seniors 65 and older, and people with underlying health conditions. In its latest update, the World Health Organization said, overall influenza activity in North America remained at low levels throughout the region. In Canada and the United States of America, influenza activity remained at interseasonal levels.

The trial of three men accused in the execution-style shootings of six men in a Surrey high-rise was taken on a vivid and disturbing tour of the apartment where the killings occurred through video and still-photo crime-scene footage. As the trial began its third week on Tuesday, court was shown police video footage of the 15th-floor unit. It revealed the six men in two groups of three lying on the floor amid streaks of blood and shell casings following the shootings on Oct. 19, 2007. Clearly visible were 22-year-old Chris Mohan and 55-year-old Ed Schellenberg, two innocent bystanders to one of B.C.s worst-ever gang slayings. Mr. Mohan lived across the hall from the apartment and somehow ended up inside. Mr. Schellenberg was a fireplace repairman servicing units in the complex. Later in the day came still photos of the crime scene. In both cases, Justice Catherine Wedge warned the court that the material was going to be disturbing. The footage was visible on large flat-screen TVs set up for maximum visibility. The gruesome images were also visible on a desktop monitor close to the bulletproof glass separating about 18 spectators from the rest of the court. Spectators included students from a Chilliwack high school present for a law-class assignment. That was intense, a Grade 12 student said afterwards. The three accused also looked on. Charged in the killings are Cody Rae Haevischer, 29, Michael Le, 28, and 29-year-old Matthew Johnston. All have entered not-guilty pleas.

Surrey Six Trial Sees Grisly Images Of Crime Site

Eileen Mohan, the mother of Chris Mohan, left the court to avoid the images of her only child. RCMP Staff-Sergeant David Teboul had a decade of experience as a Mountie when he came to the apartment the night of the killings a chaotic scene in which police officers had set up a perimeter around the building where the bodies had earlier been found. The officer was assigned to be crime-scene manager. But it wasnt until the next day, he told the court, that he actually went into the apartment to get a sense of the crime scene, and begin to plan how to proceed. What I saw was a scene that was nothing short of horrific even for a seasoned investigator, he said. There was a fair amount of blood on the floor, he testified. There were also shell casings and a pistol near one of the bodies. He said the smell was familiar from years of police work the odour of crack cocaine. Staff Sgt. Teboul said he saw crack on the stove in the kitchen. The Crown has alleged the apartment was a storehouse for drugs and cash, and the killings occurred due to a conflict between the Red Scorpions gang and the renter of the apartment. The video and still footage showed an otherwise immaculate apartment, including a kitchen and bathroom with spotless counters. In the sink of one of two bathrooms, there were a pile of batteries. On the counter of one bathroom, there was a single can of Coca-Cola. I was left with the impression the apartment wasnt lived in on a regular, permanent basis, the officer said.

Canada PM'S Office Evacuated Over Suspicious Package

An Ottawa building housing the Canadian prime minister's office was evacuated and a bomb squad called in after a suspicious package was left there. The street outside was closed to traffic while a robotic probe was sent in to investigate and then "rendered the package safe", police said. PM Stephen Harper was not in his office in Langevin Block at the time, but across the road in parliament. The incident came hours before a speech setting out proposed legislation for the next parliamentary session was due to be delivered in the Senate. Commotion CBC news said the package that was reported inside the Langevin Block building was the size of a briefcase. Chuck Benoit of the Ottawa police said there had been a commotion and a package was left and that the suspect said he would "do something". However Mr Benoit could not say whether the man had threatened the prime minister. The Ottawa Citizen newspaper said photos tweeted from the scene showed a man in white robes and cap being held in the back of a police vehicle. The building was later reopened and staff were allowed back in. Mohamoud Jimale, 45, of Toronto, has been charged with one count each ofuttering threats andmischief. Police did not say whether the package was dangerous or what it contained, as reported.

They may have been born to be wild, but three young Harley Davidson riders are probably regretting that today. Police in Langley, B.C., seized the men's motorcycles last Sunday after an officer clocked the trio going 130 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone. Police say the officer had pulled a vehicle over when he heard the distinctive roar of the motorcycles coming down the road and aimed his laser unit at the bikers.

Three Motorcyclists Caught Doubling Up On Speed Limit Have Bikes Seized

When the officer stepped out to stop the group, two of the three came to a quick stop, but the third, less experienced rider left a 50-metre skid before he dropped his bike on the road. The man was treated at the scene by ambulance workers and didn't need to go to hospital. The motorcycles will be held for a week, and each of the men who range in age from 22 to 24, will pay fines of $368.

Throne Speech Has High-Tech Focus

The governing Conservatives promise lower roaming costs for cellphone customers, enhanced rural high-speed Internet service, and allowing cable and satellite TV customers to subscribe only to the channels they want. Those promises are all part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's throne speech with a strong consumer rights focus, delivered by the Governor General in the Senate chamber Wednesday. "Canadians are tired of hidden fees," Gov. Gen. David Johnston said Wednesday. "And they should not be charged more in Canada for identical goods that sell for less in the United States." The speech also included a promise to end extra charges to receive paper bills and crack down on "predatory payday lenders." All the promises come as Parliament reopens following a month-long prorogation the governing Conservatives say allowed them to reset their agenda. That agenda includes lots of red meat for diehard Tory supporters, such as a promise to end deficits once and for all after balancing the federal budget in 2015. "Our government will introduce balanced-budget legislation," the Governor General said. "It will require balanced budgets during normal economic times, and concrete timelines for returning to balance in the event of an economic crisis." To help clamp down on federal spending, the Tories said they'll make sure the civil service is "affordable, modern and high-performing" through more performance accountability measures and unspecified changes to the Public Service Labour Relations Act. Those promises turned off NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, who has sided with public service unions against Tory reforms in the past. "It's a popular thing for Conservatives and other right-wingers to attack public servants," Mulcair said. "They tend to forget that those are the people providing public service." Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also gave a predictable thumbs-down. "This throne speech, for all its veneer of little solutions isn't actually dealing with the real problems that Canadians are facing around their debts, around jobs, around children's education," he said. The government also wants to expand its tough-on-crime agenda by promising more police tools to fight cyber bullying, continued defence of Canada's prostitution laws against constitutional challenges and by making sure "a life sentence means a sentence for life" for the most dangerous criminals. The troubled Senate also shows up in the speech with a promise to reform or abolish the red chamber once the feds get the constitutional advice they requested from the Supreme Court of Canada. SPEECH EYES CRIME AND VICTIMS The Conservatives offered up a slew of new crime and punishment measures in Wednesday's throne speech, including a new Victims Bill of Rights. "For too long, the voices of victims have been silenced, while the system coddled criminals," Gov. Gen. David Johnston said, as he read out Prime Minister Stephen Harper's new parliamentary agenda. So, the Tories are promising a measure that could mean murderers grow old and die behind bars. "Canadians do not understand why the most dangerous criminals would ever be released from prison," Johnston said. "For them, our government will change the law so that a life sentence means a sentence for life." Efforts to fight cyber bullying get high billing in the Tories' tough-on-crime agenda too with a new law to deal with the kinds of situations that lead the tragic deaths of Amanda Todd, Rehtaeh Parsons and Todd Loik. "This legislation would create a new criminal offence prohibiting the nonconsensual distribution of intimate images," Johnston said. The federal law would follow cyber bullying legislation Nova Scotias government enacted recently in response to the suicide of bullied 17-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons in April. Provincial law now allows victims to sue their cyber bullies. Other promised changes include making sure that criminals who victimize children get a separate sentence for every life they devastate, while repeat, violent criminals won't get automatic early parole. And the Tories promise to make renew efforts "to address the issue of missing and murdered aboriginal women" and to the constitutionality of Canada's prostitution laws. Also presented in the throne speech: An amendment that will allow Canadians to bring beer and spirits across provincial borders for personal use, which is currently not allowed (except for, in some cases, wine). The government says it will not use the "guise of treatment" to feed addiction, a not-so-veiled shot at programs or initiatives like Vancouver's In-Site clinic. Also, in possible opposition to opinions expressed by Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, who has argued for marijuana legalization. $70 billion for infrastructure and city funding, specifically for Toronto's TTC underground and Montreal's Champlain Bridge. A new cyber-bullying law that will outlaw the non-consensual sharing or distribution of intimate photos and will ensure a "life sentence means a sentence for life." Promises to reduce wireless roaming costs and unbundle television channels. A pending trade deal with the European Union. The government promised to tackle the sometimes head-scratching price gap between consumer goods in the United States and Canada, which the throne speech called a "geographic price discrimination against Canadians."

Over 1,900 Homes Visited In Public Safety Campaign

Employment opportunities for bookkeepers are good in the Lower Mainland. Opportunities are more favorable for bookkeepers who are certified. Employment prospects are also good for bookkeepers who are open to performing other administrative functions within a company or organization.
www.workingincanada.gc.ca

Surrey, Crime Prevention, Community Policing Services Over 1,900 homes were visited last week in just 4 hours by emergency services personnel as part of a door to door public safety campaign by the Surrey RCMP, Surrey Fire Services, and Surrey Bylaws. Residents were educated about property crime and auto theft prevention, fire safety, and how to increase the livability of neighbourhoods. This personal approach to public safety education and awareness has been successful in the past, says Surrey RCMP Officer in Charge C/Supt. Bill Fordy. Emergency services within the city continue to embrace methods to reduce crime, property loss and save lives in Surrey. In April 2013, a similar campaign resulted in a decrease in criminal activity in another area and an increase in the number of fire safety devices installed in homes. In June 2010, an initiative by the Surrey RCMP and

Surrey Fire Services resulted in a 64% reduction in break and enters and a 19% drop in house fires in the area that was canvassed. Surrey RCMP, Surrey Fire Services, and Surrey Bylaws will be analyzing the numbers to determine this campaigns effectiveness as they continue to work together to improve public safety. A reminder that as part of the Surrey RCMP, City of Surrey, and ICBCs Protect It. Lock It. Keep It. campaign, there are free steering wheel lock giveaways for older model vehicles on the following days: October 16 at Scott Road Park & Ride from 3pm-6pm November 5 at Surrey Sports & Leisure Centre from 10am - 2pm November 16 at Guildford Mall from 10am-4pm For more information on practical community safety and crime prevention tips please visit the Protect Yourself section of the Surrey RCMPs website.

Way To Cheat Translinks Compass Card System Discovered

The new Compass card system is supposed to prevent fare evasion at a cost of nearly $200 million to taxpayers. However, a way to scam the system has been discovered and it appears theres not much Translink can do about it. The Compass card system works this way: you scan your card when you enter a station, then scan it again when you get off the train at your destination stop. The card automatically charges you a three zone fare, then credits your account when you get off in one zone or two. As it turns out, those who want to evade the fare again can get off the train after one zone and scan their card so theyre only charged once at a lower rate. Translink issued the following statement to Global News Tuesday evening: There will continue to be some areas where fare evasion may be possible and will concentrate our additional system improvements and ongoing fare checks in these areas. We want people to know that if they cheat the system and are caught, we will fine them. The Compass card is set to debut in 2014.

Potty Training Your Child

Reasons for developing a resistance to potty training can include:
being scared to sit on the potty chair flushing the toilet may have scared him from wanting to sit on the toilet being pushed too early or fast before he was ready severe punishment for not using the potty or being forced to sit on the potty inconsistent training, especially among different caregivers he may have had a painful bowel movement from being constipated. If this is the case, treat his constipation and wait until he is having regular, soft bowel movements before you begin training again. or he may just be stubborn and is involved in a power struggle with his parents and is using his control over where he has a bowel movement he may enjoy the negative attention he gets from not using the potty or from having accidents although rare, there are medical conditions that can make it difficult for your child to hold in or delay urinating or having a bowel movement. Discuss with your Pediatrician if there are any medical reasons why you may be having a hard time teaching your child to use potty, especially if he seems to have other delays in his development. At this point, if your child is totally resistant to being potty trained, then it is best to just make him responsible for when he wants to use the toilet. This includes not punishing him for mistakes and not reminding him to use the potty. If he seems fearful, you can try and discuss calmly what it is about using the potty that scares him. While you may get a lot of negative feedback from friends or family members about not being more aggressive with getting your child potty trained, you should be firm and let them know that you are working on it and remind them that not all children potty train at the same time. In addition, it can be helpful if you: establish a reward or incentive for using the potty. This should include lots of praise and attention when he uses the potty. It can also include a star or reward chart on which you child can place stickers whenever he uses the potty. After a certain number of days that he has stickers, then he can get a reward, such as toy, etc. have your child be involved in changing himself when he wets or soils himself. This can include getting a new diaper, taking the dirty diaper off, cleaning himself (although he will probably need help after bowel movements), and throwing the dirty diaper away. At some point you can change him into regular under ware. You can talk about it beforehand and maybe have a ceremony where he throws away the left over diapers or you may just decide not to buy any new ones. Now, when he does wet or soil himself, you can have him help to clean out his under ware in the sink or bathtub. You may

even have him put them in the washing machine and wait with you while they are getting washed and dried. He should then dress himself. This method is not for everyone, but is usually very effective. You can also have him clean up after himself if he wet or soiled the floor. Limit him to having BMs in the bathroom. This isn't always possible, but is easy if he always asks for a diaper just to have a bowel movement. Next, have him sit on the potty to have a bowel movement, even if he continues to wear his diaper. Then work on getting his diaper off by opening it and

eventually taking it off. During this process, you should give lots of praise and rewards during each step. If he is having a hard time learning to use the potty, but isn't necessarily resistant to the idea, then developing a regular daily routine of sitting on the potty for five or ten minutes every few hours may be helpful. Most importantly, avoid physical punishment for not using the potty, even in an older child. It can be appropriate to verbally let him know that you disapprove of his not using the potty, but this should not get to the point of yelling, shaming or nagging.

An allowance can be a great way to teach kids money management skills. With an allowance, your child can learn how to make decisions, deal with limited resources, and understand the benefits of saving and charitable giving. There's no single correct way to handle allowance. As you decide when to start, how much to give, and whether you want to link the allowance to chores, it's important to make choices that fit your family. Starting an Allowance No particular age is best for every kid, but consider starting an allowance by the time a child is 10 years old. By then, most kids have had experience making thoughtful spending decisions but still look to parents for guidance. How much allowance should you give? It's depends on your financial situation and what kind of commitment you feel that you can comfortably keep. Experts generally recommend that kids get 50 cents to $1 per week for every year of their age $3.50 to $7 for a 7-yearold, for example.

Regardless of how much you choose, give the allowance regularly and increase the amount as your child gets older. Allowance and Chores Should an allowance be tied to chores? Again, it's a personal choice. Some experts think that it's important to make this connection so that kids learn the relationship between work and pay. Others say that kids should have a responsibility to help with housework, above and beyond any financial incentive. Ultimately, you must decide what works best for you. Whatever you decide, be sure that all parties understand the arrangement. If you give an allowance for doing housework, make sure that your kids understand what their responsibilities are and the consequences of not doing them. You might want to involve them in choosing the chores, and then keep a chart posted to remind them what needs to be done. It's important to be consistent. Following through on your promise

Child Allowance

to give a regular allowance sets a good example for your kids and is incentive for them to honor their end of the bargain. If you don't keep up with the allowance, they might lose that incentive and stop doing the chores. Using an Allowance How should kids spend their allowance? It's a good to have them use it for discretionary things, not essential purchases such as food or clothing. This lets kids make buying decisions and mistakes without dire consequences. You may want to encourage kids to put away a portion for charity and another portion for savings. If so, let them choose where to donate the money. It may be a cause that a child can relate to in some way, like an animal shelter or a group that helps sick kids. If some of the allowance goes to savings, consider setting up an account at a local bank. This way, your child can keep track of the money. Many banks offer special bank accounts for kids, and yours may enjoy the experience of getting mail, even if the mail is a bank

statement. Beyond Allowance Once kids become teenagers, you may want to provide a quarterly clothing allowance in addition to the weekly allowance. If you do, establish a reasonable budget and allow your kids to spend it as they wish but also to honor its limits. If your son chooses to buy a $95 shirt or your daughter opts for a pricey handbag, for example, they might have to make compromises on other clothing choices.

Some medical symptoms are warnings that you need immediate care. Learn to recognize them.
That new symptom is troubling: the inexplicable swelling in your calf or the blood in your urine. Could it be serious or even life-threatening? Your body flashes signals -- symptoms and signs -- that warn you of potential problems. Fortunately, many symptoms turn out not to be serious. For example, the majority of headaches stem from stress, eyestrain, lack of sleep, dehydration, caffeine withdrawal, and other mundane causes. But a sudden, agonizing "thunderclap" headache -- the worst of your life -could mean bleeding in the brain. Being able to recognize this serious symptom and calling 911 may save your life. Here are six important flashing signals. 1. Paralysis of the arms or legs, tingling, numbness, confusion, dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, trouble finding words, or weakness, especially on one side of the face or body. These are signs of stroke -- or a "brain attack" -- in which arteries that supply oxygen to the brain become blocked or rupture, causing brain tissue to die. Symptoms depend on which area of the brain is involved. If a large blood vessel is blocked, a wide area may be affected, so a person may have paralysis on one side of the body and lose other functions, such as speech and understanding. If a smaller vessel is blocked, paralysis may remain limited to an arm or leg, or even the face. If you have symptoms, call 911 right away and get to an emergency room that offers clot-busting therapy for strokes due to blocked vessels. Such treatment, which dissolves clots in blocked vessels, needs to be given within the first 3 hours after symptoms begin, but newer treatments may work within a longer time frame. Timing is urgent; fast treatment can potentially stop brain tissue death before permanent brain injury happens. There is a time clock ticking as to when you might totally recover. 2. Chest pain or discomfort; pain in the arm, jaw, or neck; breaking out in a cold sweat; extreme weakness; nausea; vomiting; feeling faint; or being short of breath. These are signs of heart attack. If you get some of these symptoms, call 911 immediately and go to the emergency room by ambulance. A doctor also recommends that patients chew one regular, full-strength aspirin (unless they're allergic to aspirin) to help prevent damage to the heart muscle during a heart attack. Not everyone who has a heart attack feels chest pain or pressure or a sense of indigestion. Some people, especially women, the elderly, and people with diabetes, get "painless" heart attacks, the doctors say. Being aware of "painless" heart attack signs is crucial: symptoms may include weakness, sudden dizziness, and a pounding heart, shortness of breath, heavy sweating, a feeling of impending doom, nausea, and vomiting. Both doctors say it's important to learn heart attack signs and understand them in context. Everybody has jaw pain. You don't immediately run and say, 'I've got a heart attack. But if you're also sweating and you have some of these other symptoms -- shortness of breath and so forth -- then that's going to tip you off that there's something much more serious happening. 3. Tenderness and pain in the back of your lower leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood. These are symptoms of a potentially dangerous blood clot in your leg, especially if they come after you've been sitting for a long time, such as on an airplane or during a long car trip. These signs can also surface if you've been bedridden after surgery. Anybody is susceptible. Such blood clots are more common than most people and doctors realize. Blood is more likely to pool in your legs when you're sitting or lying down for long periods of time, as opposed to standing and walking. If a blood clot forms in your leg as a result, your calf can feel swollen, painful, and tender to the touch. If you get sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, a piece of the blood clot may have broken off and traveled through the bloodstream to your lungs. This condition can be life-threatening, so get to an emergency room without delay if you have any of these symptoms. 4. Blood in the urine without accompanying pain. Anytime you see blood in your urine, call your doctor promptly, even if you have no pain. Kidney stones or a bladder or prostate infection are common causes of blood in the urine. But these problems are usually painful or uncomfortable, which sends people to the doctor promptly. In contrast, when people see blood in their urine but feel no pain, some take a "wait and see" approach, especially if they just have one episode. But you can't have this attitude. Lack of pain doesn't necessarily mean lack of seriousness. Cancer of the kidney, urethra, bladder, or prostate can cause bleeding into the urinary tract; when these cancers are small enough to be curable, they may not cause pain. So don't dismiss this important sign because, "blood in the urine may be the only clue for an early diagnosis." 5. Asthma symptoms that don't improve or get worse. Asthma attacks are marked by wheezing or difficulty breathing. When an attack doesn't improve or worsens, a patient should get emergency care. If an asthma attack is left untreated, it can lead to severe chest muscle fatigue and death. Some people with persistent asthma hesitate to go to the emergency room because they've gone so many times before, or they need someone to drive them because they're too short of breath. So instead of seeking care, "They try to hang in there," even if they need higher doses of inhalants or have decreasing lung function measurements when using a device to measure how well they move air out of their lungs. Because asthma makes breathing difficult, the muscles for breathing may tire and the volume of air exchanged by the lungs will decrease. As a result, a person's oxygen level drops while blood levels of carbon dioxide rise. A carbon dioxide buildup in the blood has a sedating effect on the brain, which may cause you to feel even drowsier. You may lose the motivation or energy to breathe. A person with asthma who seems to be relaxing more, who seems to not be struggling for breath anymore -- even though they've been at it for 6 or 8 hours -- may actually be worse. It could be a sign of respiratory fatigue. Eventually, the person could stop breathing. They're really in a big danger zone. Patients believe they're getting better when they're actually getting worse. They become sedated and seem to be peaceful when actually, they're dying. One of the most important considerations is how long an attack lasts, according to both doctors. If you've been having labored respirations with the asthma not relenting after a period of several hours, even though you may be apparently doing OK, don't let it go any longer. Get on to the emergency room. 6. Depression and suicidal thoughts. Few people would put up with crushing chest pain or extreme shortness of breath, but many endure depression, even though, at its extreme, it can be life-threatening. Depression can be a very, very serious problem because people can commit suicide. Some people will not seek care when they are depressed because they think that they'll be perceived as being crazy or not strong or not manly, and they have to understand that there is a chemical imbalance going on in their brain. It is a disease just like any other disease. Symptoms of depression include sadness, fatigue, apathy, anxiety, changes in sleep habits, and loss of appetite. Depression can be treated with medications and psychotherapy. If you have suicidal thoughts, you can speak to someone right away by calling national phone number such as 1-800-SUICIDE. Speak Up When You Think Something Is Wrong Doctors are human: They can miss important diagnoses, including heart attacks. A patient's awareness and vigilance can make a difference. "My feeling is, as a doctor, I want a patient who's informed. I'd rather have a patient who's informed who's helping me so I won't make a mistake." "And I can be honest and say, 'I'm human. Don't be intimidated by me because I have a white coat on. Don't be intimidated by me because I'm using big words. If patients can recognize potentially serious symptoms, they'll have more power when they go to the doctor or the emergency room. You have enough to say, 'Well, have you ruled out this problem?'"

If someone close to you has had a drinking problem, you know how hard it can be. You know how living or dealing with someone who abuses or is dependent on alcohol can change and even destroy your life. You're an important part of your loved one's treatment and recovery. Your emotions and life may change too, and taking care of yourself is also important. Encourage treatment It can be very hard to live with a family member who has a drinking problem. It's best not to try to control, excuse, or cover up the person's drinking. Instead, encourage your family member to seek treatment. Find a good time to talk to the person. To learn ways you can help someone get treatment, see: Help with treatment and recovery When the choice for treatment has been made, you play an important part. You can help your loved one stop drinking

and help repair the damage done to your family or relationship. Here are some things you can do: If you drink, decide whether you want to keep alcohol in the house. Having alcohol in your home might make it harder for your loved one to stay sober. Be involved and patient. Attend recovery meetings with your loved one, and be supportive. Know that it may take a long time for you to trust and forgive the person and for the person to forgive himself or herself. Be aware that your loved one may seem like a different person after he or she is sober. You may find it hard to get used to this person. You may need to rebuild your relationship. Understand that you have the right to know how recovery is going, but ask about it in a respectful way.

Alcohol Abuse and Dependence - For Family and Friends

Alcohol Abuse

Help your loved one plan for a relapse. Most people relapse after treatment. This doesn't mean the treatment failed. Try to help your loved one see relapse as a chance to do better and to keep working on skills to avoid drinking. Focus on the positive actions your loved one is making. Take care of yourself Taking care of yourself while you help your loved one is important. You probably will feel relief and happiness when the person decides to get help. But treatment and recovery mean changes in your life too. Your emotions may become more complicated. You may: Resent what the person did to you in the past. Not trust the person. You may not want to give the person the house key, the car key, or money. You also may feel guilty about not

trusting the person. Find it hard to give up or share your family role. For example, if you took over child-rearing when your partner was drinking, you may resent him or her becoming involved again. If you managed money, you may resent having to make shared decisions on how to spend money. Resent that the person is spending more time at meetings or with others in recovery than with you. Worry so much about relapse that you avoid anything that you think may upset the person. You also may resent this feeling. These feelings are normal. You've been through a bad period of your life, and what happened is not easy to forget. Nor is it easy to forgive your loved one. Keep in mind that recovery is the road to a better life and that you can help your loved one get there.

It's no secret that alcohol consumption can cause major health problems, including cirrhosis of the liver and injuries sustained in automobile accidents. But if you think liver disease and car crashes are the only health risks posed by drinking, think again: Researchers have linked alcohol consumption to more than 60 diseases. "Alcohol does all kinds of things in the body, and we're not fully aware of all its effects," says James C. Garbutt, MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a researcher at the university's Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies. "It's a pretty complicated little molecule." Here are 12 conditions linked to chronic heavy drinking. Anemia Heavy drinking can cause the number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells to be abnormally low. This condition, known as anemia, can trigger a host of symptoms, including fatigue, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness. Cancer "Habitual drinking increases the risk of cancer," says Jurgen Rehm, PhD, chairman of the University of Toronto's department of addiction policy and a senior scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, also in Toronto. Scientists believe the increased risk comes when the body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a potent carcinogen. Cancer sites linked to alcohol use include the mouth, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), esophagus, liver, breast, and colorectal region. Cancer risk rises even higher in heavy drinkers who also use tobacco.

Health Risks Of Chronic Heavy Drinking

Cardiovascular disease Heavy drinking, especially bingeing, makes platelets more likely to clump together into blood clots, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. In a landmark study published in 2005, Harvard researchers found that binge drinking doubled the risk of death among people who initially survived a heart attack. Heavy drinking can also cause cardiomyopathy, a potentially deadly condition in which the heart muscle weakens and eventually fails, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation, in which the heart's upper chambers (atria) twitch chaotically rather than constrict rhythmically, can cause blood clots that can trigger a stroke. Ventricular fibrillation causes chaotic twitching in the heart's main pumping chambers (ventricles). It causes rapid loss of consciousness and, in the absence of immediate treatment, sudden death. Cirrhosis Alcohol is toxic to liver cells, and many heavy drinkers develop cirrhosis, a sometimes-lethal condition in which the liver is so heavily scarred that it is unable to function. But it's hard to predict which drinkers will develop cirrhosis. "Some people who drink huge amounts never get cirrhosis, and some who don't drink very much do get it," Saitz says. For some unknown reason, women seem to be especially vulnerable. Dementia As people age, their brains shrink, on average, at a rate of about 1.9% per decade. That's considered normal. But heavy drinking speeds the shrinkage of certain key regions in the brain, resulting in memory loss and other symptoms of dementia. Heavy drinking can also lead to subtle but potentially debilitating deficits in the ability to plan, make judgments, solve problems, and perform other aspects of "executive function," which are "the higher-order abilities that allow us to maximize our function as human beings," Garbutt says. In addition to the "nonspecific" dementia that stems from brain atrophy, heavy drinking can cause nutritional deficiencies so severe that they trigger other forms of dementia. Depression It's long been known that heavy drinking often goes hand in hand with depression, but there has been debate about which came first -- the drinking or the depression. One theory is that depressed people turned to alcohol in an attempt to "self-medicate" to ease their emotional pain. But a large study from New Zealand showed that it was probably the other way around -- that is, heavy drinking led to depression. Seizures Heavy drinking can cause epilepsy and can trigger seizures even in people who don't have epilepsy. It can also interfere with the action of the medications used to treat convulsions. Gout A painful condition, gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Although some cases are largely hereditary, alcohol and other dietary factors seem to play a role. Alcohol also seems to aggravate existing cases of gout. High blood pressure Alcohol can disrupt the sympathetic nervous

system, which, among other things, controls the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in response to stress, temperature, exertion, etc. Heavy drinking -- and bingeing, in particular -- can cause blood pressure to rise. Over time, this effect can become chronic. High blood pressure can lead to many other health problems, including kidney disease, heart disease, and stroke. Infectious disease Heavy drinking suppresses the immune system, providing a toehold for infections, including tuberculosis, pneumonia, HIV/ AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases (including some that cause infertility). People who drink heavily also are more likely to engage in risky sex. Heavy drinking is associated with a threefold increase in the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Nerve damage Heavy drinking can cause a form of nerve damage known as alcoholic neuropathy, which can produce a painful pins-andneedles feeling or numbness in the extremities as well as muscle weakness, incontinence, constipation, erectile dysfunction, and other problems. Alcoholic neuropathy may arise because alcohol is toxic to nerve cells, or because nutritional deficiencies attributable to heavy drinking compromise nerve function. Pancreatitis In addition to causing stomach irritation (gastritis), drinking can inflame the pancreas. Chronic pancreatitis interferes with the digestive process, causing severe abdominal pain and persistent diarrhea -and "it's not fixable." Some cases of chronic pancreatitis are triggered by gallstones, but up to 60% stem from alcohol consumption.

Get A Permanent Resident Card

The permanent resident card (PR card) is the official proof that you are a permanent resident of Canada. You use this wallet-sized plastic card to show you can enter and stay in Canada when you return from another country. You must show this card when you reenter Canada on a commercial vehicle, such as an airplane, boat, train or bus. If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your car, there are other documents you can use. If you plan to leave Canada, check your cards expiry date to make sure that it will still be valid when you return. Most cards are valid for five years. If you do not plan to leave Canada, you do not need the card. You may also need a passport to reenter Canada. Please see the Canadian Border Services Agency website for the documents you will need at the border. Learn when to get a PR card If you are immigrating as a permanent resident, CIC will mail your card to you when you get to Canada. You do not need to apply for a card. You may want to apply for a PR card if: you did not get one when you immigrated to Canada, you have one that has expired or will soon expire, or your card was lost, stolen or damaged. Determine your eligibility Make sure you are eligible to apply for a PR card. Apply for a new or replacement card Find out what you need to do to apply for a PR card. This application can be for your first card, to renew a card or to replace one. You can also apply for urgent processing if: you will travel outside Canada very soon, and you do not have a PR card, it has expired or will expire soon. There is a different process to fix a mistake or make a change to your PR card. Check processing times Find out how long it will take CIC to process your application. You can also view the service standard when you immigrate to Canada. This standard shows how quickly we should be able to process applications. Understand permanent resident status A permanent resident is someone who has acquired permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not yet a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents have rights and privileges in Canada even though they remain citizens of their home country. In order to maintain permanent resident status, they must fulfill specified residency obligations. A person in Canada temporarily, such as an international student or a temporary foreign worker, is not a permanent resident. Refugees who are resettled from overseas arrive in Canada as permanent residents through the GovernmentAssisted Refugee Program or the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. However, people who make refugee claims in Canada (either at a port of entry or a CIC office) are not permanent residents. In order to become one, these people must receive a positive decision on their refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board. Then, they must apply for and be granted permanent resident status. What permanent residents can do As a permanent resident, you and your dependants have the right: To receive most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage. To live, work or study anywhere in Canada. To apply for Canadian citizenship. To protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. You must pay taxes, and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels. What permanent residents cannot do As a permanent resident, you and your dependants cannot: Vote or run for political office. Hold certain jobs that have a high-level security clearance requirement. Remain in Canada if you are convicted of a serious criminal offence and have been told to leave the country.

Deepika Padukone narrowly escapes group protesting against her film 'Ram Leela' at a garba event in Ahmedabad

What!!! Deepika Almost Got Pelted With Eggs And Tomatoes!

Aishwarya Picks Up Her Own Producers

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is no ordinary actress. She is privileged by the virtue of her talent and status in Bollywood that she is accustomed to chose her producers. In a recent happening a producer leaked the information that Aishwarya had agreed to work in his next. This annoyed the actress and she verbally reprimanded the producer. Ash is happy to do a film with her husband Abhishek Bachchan; she has also indicated that she may do a film directed by Prahlad Kakar. But one hears she has indicated that she will choose the producer for the project. The producer's side says that there will be final narration given to the diva. The project may take off in the beginning of 2014. Let's wait for the name of the lucky producer to be filled in the slot.

When Deepika Padukone got ready to attend the ongoing garba festivities in Ahmedabad, little did she imagine what was in store for her. Eggs and tomatoes! A group of protesters had gathered on the garba grounds to agitate against her upcoming film, Ram Leela for some allegedly controversial content. Onlookers say that the group had almost readied themselves to pelt Dippy with the eggs and tomatoes when they were informed that the makers had agreed to take the content off the film. Says a source, `Members of the Jadeja and the Rabari community were set to attack the actress as well as the organisers at the venue. The situation

got tense but finally they backed down after they were told that the apparently offensive portions from the film had been re-dubbed.` According to an insider from the production, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had already communicated the decision to edit out the portions to the senior members of the community but word had not percolated to the agitators at the grounds.` After the matter was sorted, the protestors left the ground and Deepika continued with the evening's affair. The official spokesperson of the film says, `Ram Leela is a well-made film which does not antagonise, offend or disrespect any community, whatsoever.`

Actress Mallika Sherawat, who is seeking a life partner through a reality dating show 'The Bachelorette India Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika', has accepted marriage proposal from one of the suitors. During an impromptu act, contestants were asked to impress Mallika and that's when Jashn Singh proposed her in a "filmy style" asking Mallika's hand. She was not only impressed but went all gaga over the proposal and promptly accepted it much to everyone's surprise, a source said. Recently, Mallika planted a kiss on model-actor Kiran Sagoo's cheek. He is amongst the 15 suitors who are on the show to capture her attention, the source added. This particular episode is likely to be aired on Tuesday on Life Ok Channel. 'The Bachelorette India -Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika' is a spin-off from the American competitive reality dating game show. The series revolves around a single bachelorette and a pool of romantic interests, trying to impress her. The show is a journey to find true love for the actress on small screen.

Veena Malik, who is known for her bold and bindass image, never minces words while talking to the press. And the recent revelation by her is no exception. Talking to a news daily, the actress has revealed that her alleged beau, Ashmit Patel, used to wash her lingerie while the duo were in the Bigg Boss house almost 3 years ago. Veena, who was recently seen sharing the screen space with Ashmit Patel in Supermodel, was asked whether the duos fallout had any effect on their onscreen rapport. The controversial actress, on her part, defended any issue while working with Ashmit and said, No, the chemistry was much stronger. When you have that connect with the past, and now you guys don`t talk to each other, the pent up emotions find a way out. Once that connect is there, it is always there. You cannot just erase

it. It was obviously there. It wasn`t shown on Bigg Boss, but Ashmit too loved me a lot. What really raised our eyebrow is the fact that it was a daily ritual for the lovebirds to wash each others under garments in the madcap house. He used to wash my lingerie too and would even take my outbursts calmly. Sometimes, I would even hit him with my high-heels. Episodes aired only showed me washing his undies, but that wasn`t the case as the affection was mutual, revealed Veena. Ashmit and Veena were two of the contestants in the season 4 of popular reality show `Bigg Boss`. Owing to their intimacy during the show, the pair was in the limelight for a long time. For washing undies and then getting hit by Veenas expensive sandals, our definitely heart goes out to poor Ashmit for daring to love Veena.

Nadroga President To Step Down

TIMES SPORTS
Fiji Football Associations referees director Paresh Kishore says all the decisions made by match officials during the final of the 2013 Inter District Championship in Lautoka were correct and excellent. Kishore said he thoroughly assessed the video footage of the final today and made clips of all the incidents. I did a thorough analysis and upon the completion of my assessment, I can proudly say that the decisions of my referee and the assistant referees were excellent and accurate and I salute them for a great effort, he said. They were very active and prompt in their approach and made all the right decisions. I have made individual clips of all the goals and incidents like the off-side situations and the penalty which was awarded and all the calls were timely and people disputing the decisions can come to my office and see the clips. The two assistant referees did a marvelous job in picking up the incidents and the referee was always at the right spot and wonderfully made her decisions.

All Decisions Were Correct: Kishore

Vijay Singh will step down as Nadroga FA president in two weeks. Singh did not give any reasons for his decision saying he would do so later. I will do so after a meeting with the other stakeholders of Nadroga FA, he said. Singh took charge of Nadroga FA earlier this year. During his term, Nadroga reached the semi-finals of the Battle of the Giants tournament and finished 8th in the National Football League to secure their place in the reshuffled top eight NFL format for the upcoming season. He is the second president to step down following the Inter District Championship after Navneeda. Gounder announced last Sunday that he was stepping down from his post as Nadi FA boss. Kishore said he also watched the video footage of the semifinal match between Nadi and Labasa and claims that the corner from which Nadi scored was supposed to be a goal kick to Labasa were false. Rakesh Varman rightfully awarded Nadi the corner kick as the ball last touched Labasa defender Posiano Kalisito and the video footage clearly shows this. I just want to remind and urge all district coaches and officials once again to attend seminars and workshops organised by us so they can equip themselves better with the rules and laws of the game and the changes that have been taking place. FIFA has made the learning process simpler now by making different clips and presentations about different incidents, fouls and so on and the district officials and coaches can really learn a lot from this, he added. Nadi had disputed the penalty decision and had also claimed that Bas winning goal by Abbu Zahid was scored from an off-side position while a late goal by them which was disallowed was scored from a clear position.

After clinching its 23rd Inter District Championship (IDC) title in Lautoka last weekend, the Ba football team has shifted its focus on the Pacific Cup which will be played in New Zealand next month. Ba coach Yogendra Dutt said they are happy to make the cut again to the tournament and the Men In Black will prepare accordingly. "We will prepare well but for now I am leaving everything on the administration of Ba FA to execute plans for the tournament," he said. "Once the president and executives meet and decide on our plans then I will come

in and start off preparations. I certainly will be requesting to keep the same squad and want to take the young members of the squad for more exposure." "We had 7 youngsters in the IDC squad and unfortunately not all of them could get game time but come the Pacific Cup and the National League matches, they surely will be fielded. Ba believes in youth players and we will be drafting in more youngsters from secondary school level into our squad." 4R Electrical Ba defeated Jacks Nadi 2-1 in the final to win the Llyod Farebrother trophy after a lapse of 5 years.

THE Fiji Football Association will soon appoint a commercial manager to generate income for the parent body. The commercial manager will be in charge of promoting the Fiji FA brand. Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said the appointment would be done in consultation with FIFA. "With the appointment of the commercial manager, it will open new doors for Fiji FA to get the needed revenue to boost the operations," Patel said. "The application for the position has closed. We definitely need to promote our products. There are so many areas that we are lacking in where we can get funds from." Meanwhile, the parent body is keen to promote women's soccer in the country after the successful hosting of the first ever Girl's Under-16 Secondary Schools Championship in Ba in August. Taveuni Celebrates IDC Win

THE Taveuni soccer side celebrated its Courts Inter-District Championship premier division win in style on Tuesday. Loyal supporters lined up to welcome the team at the jetty where the celebration for the historic win began. Taveuni won the premier division title for the first time in 66 years after beating giants Dreketi 1-0 in the final on Sunday at Lautoka's Churchill Park. Taveuni Football president Zahid Hussein said the players and officials were overwhelmed with the reception they received upon their arrival on the island. The parade started from Wairiki and ended at the Taveuni Central Sanatan School in Naqara. Hussein said they also visited the residence of Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. He also confirmed they shared $6500 between the 16 players who represented the district at the IDC. The team will be hosted to a dinner by the people of Qarawalu later this week.

The 4R Electrical Ba side was crowned the new Courts Inter District Championship winner last Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Jacks Nadi at Churchill Park in Lautoka during the grand final. Nadi made a perfect start in the final and dominated the first half. Their hard work was rewarded with a Viliame Toma goal. Ba came out strong in the second half and they were awarded a penalty by referee Finau Vulivuli just minutes inside the new half. Goal scoring defender Avinesh Waran Suwamy was not going to miss this golden opportunity as both sides end the normal time 1-1. Two spells of extra time was played and it was young Abbu Zahid who nailed the winning goal just as the match was set to head for penalty kicks. Zahid also had scored the winning goal for Ba earlier in the semifinal when Ba dethroned defending champion Finance Pacific Suva 1-0. Nadi scored in the dying stages for a 1-0 victory over Labasa to qualify for the final. Ba last lifted the prestigious title back

in 2007. They had lost in the final last year and in 2011. Osea Vakatalesau, the Ba skipper says they dedicated the epic victory to late fomer Ba legend Farouk Janeman who recently passed away and to the diehard fans. I would like to thank late Farouk Janeman for his contribution towards this team. I would like to dedicate this win to him, Vakatalesau said. To the Ba fans, without your support we would not have been able to achieve what we came to achieve, he added. Nadi also scored a late goal against Ba in the dying minutes but the goal was ruled off side. Ba side was rewarded with the first prize money of $15,000. Taveuni was crowned the IDC premier division champions for the very first time after a 1-0 victory over Dreketi. Ba maintained their dominance with a 1-0 win over Labasa in the primary school final which marked their fourth sucussful defence. Sachin Tendulkar: India Batting Legend To Retire From All Cricket

with his highest score an unbeaten 248 against Bangladesh in 2004. Tendulkar racked up 16 Test hundreds before he turned 25 and in 2000 became the first man to score 50 international tons, while in 2010 he became the first double centurion in a one-day international. It was hoped his 100th international hundred would be in the 2,000th Test match, which was against England at the home of cricket, Lord's, in 2011 but he was dismissed for 34 and 12 and the feat was achieved in an ODI the following year. One of his most memorable Test centuries was an unbeaten 103 that inspired India to victory against England in December 2008 and came shortly after terror attacks hit his home city of Mumbai. Tendulkar was popular across the world, and in 1992 became the first overseas player to sign for Yorkshire, scoring more than 1,000 runs in the summer. BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said on Twitter: "Perfect symmetry to Sachin's retirement: 200th Test, not confirmed, surely to be played in Mumbai. Also a charming man to deal with, which I have been fortunate to do many times." Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: "One of the greatest ever Sachin Tendulkar is retiring. One of my heroes and an absolute joy to play against." And England batsman Kevin Pietersen also took to Twitter to dub Tendulkar: "Undisputed Champion of Cricket!"

Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar will retire from all forms of cricket after playing his 200th Test next month. The 40-year-old former India captain, who retired from one-day internationals in December 2012, will end his career with two matches against West Indies. "It's hard to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I've ever done since I was 11," he said. Tendulkar is the highest scorer in both Tests and ODIs, with 15,837 runs in 198 Tests and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. He made his international debut aged 16 in November 1989 and last year became the only batsman in the history of the game to reach 100 international centuries. "All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years," Tendulkar said. He played his final Twenty20 match last weekend in the Champions League T20 final between his Mumbai Indians

team and a Rajasthan Royals side led by another former India skipper, his longstanding team-mate Rahul Dravid. Tendulkar's final appearances will also take place in India and he said: "It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test match on home soil, as I call it a day." He also holds the record for the most number of Test appearances, with Australians Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh joint second on 168, followed by Rahul Dravid (164) and South African Jacques Kallis, who is still playing, on 162. The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, N Srinivasan, said: "He is without doubt the greatest cricketer India has produced. "In fact, one should really say he ranks among the top of all-time great sportspersons in the world. No one has served Indian cricket as Sachin has. "He has truly been an ambassador

for India and Indian cricket. He has been an inspiration for generations of sportsmen, not just cricketers. "We respect his decision to retire, although many of us can't imagine an Indian team without Sachin." Tendulkar was tipped for greatness from an early age, and whilst still at school in 1988 he made an unbeaten 326 in a stand of 664 with Vinod Kambli in the semi-finals of the Harris Shield. His first Test century came in his 14th innings and was against England at Old Trafford in 1990. There were six double centuries, the first of which came against New Zealand in 1999 and the most recent a 214 against Australia in Bangalore in October 2010,
