Multimedia Workshops

The first of the multimedia workshops will be held in week 6 and week 7. It will cover filming using the cameras. Some time may also be devoted to editing footage. There are four times to choose from over the next two weeks. Anyone can go to any time slot. The times for these workshops are: Tue 3 Apr 1700-1800 CB10.02.470 (before class) Wed 4 Apr 1700-1800 CB02.07.110 Thu 5 Apr 1300-1400 CB02.05.33 Fri 13 Apr 1300-1400 CB04.02.31

These workshops are optional, but they are highly recommended. They are a good way of making sure you are prepared for your interview, and of getting some time with the camera kits before you book them. The tutor will also take you through simple interviewing techniques. The tutor will have camera kits to show you, but it would be very useful for one of your group members to bring a laptop to the class. You may want to see whether you can download the footage directly to your laptop. The second workshop times will be posted shortly, and it will be devoted to editing mainly. It will be immediately after the vice-chancellors week.

What else do you need to know about? 2 Kit Types, you will need to choose one. How to book a kit. How to edit your footage

There are 2 Kit Types: Canon Small CamCorder and Microphone Kits
There are 5 of these kits. These are very heavy and need two people to carry them. These kits may change shortly, and be separated into two kits, but for the time being they contain the following. 3 x Light kits + extra light bulx 1 x Camera kit: camera, case, adapter, TV cable, USB cable, control remote, 4 x CDs 3 x manuals 1 x Tripod kit 1 x Microphone boom 1 x Microphone kit 1 x Headphones kit 1 x Instruction manual 3 x Adapters ( black, silver & gold in microphone kit) 1 x Power board 4 x Extension cord 1x microphone extension

Sony CamCorder Kit

There are 8 of these kits. These are better for people who have access to a computer that has a firewire port (eg a mac). If you want to use these you can also connect them to a mac with a firewire cable. These may not be available right now (ask when you book via email), but will be very soon. Note firewire comes in a small 4-pin size (also called ilink and common on pcs), a medium 6-pin size, and a larger, rectangular 9-pin size (which is common on newer macs and is available on the macs at the bottom of building 10). You should check which one you have access to on your computer, as not all cables are available for each kit. You cannot download any footage without one of these. You can just download the footage at a mac in building 10, transfer the footage to USB and then edit it on any computer. Also the camera has an hdmi port, but no hdmi cable but if you have a cable you may be able to transfer the footage using this. You should buy a mini-DV tape for these. These are cheap and are very handy as a backup copy of your raw footage. Sony CamCorder with good quality microphone attached. Tripod Headphones Battery AC Adapter (2 parts) RCA Audio//Video Cable Firewire Cable (either 4-pin to 9-pin, or 4-pin to 4-pin). The camera has a 4-pin output. Instructions Manual

Booking and picking up the Kits. FEIT SRH Bldg 10 Level 3 RM (CB10.3.510 )
Autumn 2012 If you wish to borrow kits, you will need to book them via email. Kits will be allocated on a first come/first serve basis, so make sure you email your booking request to FEIT_LDCAdmin@uts.edu.au as soon as you know the day and time of your interview. You may like to borrow earlier to familiarise yourself with the equipment. WARNING: some of the kits are heavy and will be easier to carry with 2 people. You will need to complete a booking form when you pick up your kit, so please allow time for this, as well as checking the kit with the staff member. The kit check should happen both when you pick up, and when you return a kit. If you do not arrive at least 15 minutes before closing your kit may be lent to another group. REMEMBER: Return kits in first part of shift: Mon: 1500-1615 Tue: 1500-1615 Wed: 1100-1215 Fri: 1200-1315 Mon: 1630-1745 Tue: 1630-1745 Wed: 1230-1345 Fri: 1330-1445

We have tried to stagger the hours and group them before or after subject lectures which are most likely to be attended by CITP students, and to provide opportunities for part-time students.

Editing the Footage

There is plenty of simple, free software for both mac and pc for editing your podcast. I recommend either iMovie (for Mac) or Windows Movie Maker (for PC). There is more advanced software out there, but we do not expect you to use it. For newer PCs you will find that Windows Movie Maker is not automatically installed on your computer, you have to download it from Microsoft but it is free. For older PCs you should already have Windows Movie Maker installed.
