Happy Fall! We hope you had a great summer! We at CIPUSA had the pleasure of hosting a short-term social work program and another Open World delegation, and we are currently facilitating a short-term disaster relief program for the first time. We are pleased to bring you these updates, and hope to see you at our fair trade holiday shopping event in December! Enjoy!

Disaster Relief
On September 29, Yoshiaki "Yoshi" Inoue from Beppu City, Oita, Japan arrived in Cleveland for the beginning of his Disaster Relief program. Yoshi is a licensed Social Worker at the Beppu City Medical Center. While in Cleveland, Yoshi visited the American Red Cross and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Yoshi spent also two weeks with our Columbus affiliate office and is now finishing his program in Boston, MA. Yoshi was involved in the disaster relief efforts during the recent tsunami in Japan. His goal during this program is to explore the potential of social workers to assist in natural disaster relief through grief counseling and emotional support.

The delegates have plans to introduce the programming they observed here back home and utilize connections they made here for ongoing collaborations.

Jamaican Art Therapy Program

In July and August, three Jamaican social workers participated in a short-term art therapy program both with us in Cleveland and in Columbus with our affiliate Columbus International Program. In Cleveland they met with Diane Meros of Ursuline College, Tamara Shella of the Cleveland Clinic Arts & Medicine Institute, Tara Griest of University Hospitals Music Therapy, Amy Should and Zsuzsa Csepanyi of the Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland, and Sister Ellen Themes of Stone Gardens Assisted Living Residence. Each of these trained Art Therapists shared their experiences in the profession with our delegates.

Global Impact Award Dinner

On October 1, 2013, some CIPUSA host families, CIPUSA Board Chair Janis Faehnrich, other members of the Board, and President Lisa Purdy attended a reception and dinner to honor CIPUSA Advisory Council member Richard Celeste, Former Ambassador to India and Former Governor of Ohio. The event was hosted by Cleveland Council on World Affairs at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Cleveland. Mr. Celeste spoke about the influences and opportunities that have inspired him throughout his life and global career during his acceptance speech.
