Riley Elementary School

From the Desk of Mrs. Bernal, Principal Thanks Lowes D.C.!

Last year, Steve Bishop, the parent of Skylar Bishop, approached Mrs. Matz about an opportunity for Lowes D.C. to donate materials and labor to help beautify Riley Elementary! On September 18th, about 35 employees from Lowes D.C and parent volunteers showed up and diligently got to work. Thanks for everything, Riley looks great!

The lessons include rereading, phonics, vocabulary, word work, writing in response to stories, answering questions about stories and reading new books both fiction and nonfiction. Students also take books home that have been read at school for extra practice. Riley Elementary is very lucky to have two Bowling Green State University Students who are getting their Masters Degree in Reading. PTO NEWS AND EVENTS

Hi everyone, its a new school year and we have a lot of good things to tell you. First of all we have decided to combine the PTO from Longfellow, Riley and FIES into one organization. We feel this will not only make us larger and more effective, but also help those parents with students in multiple schools, so they wont have to split their time or deal with several fundraisers. Next, let me introduce myself, my name is Caryl Stone and I am the new president of your PTO. My daughter Willow and I moved here last year, but we are no strangers to Fostoria. For the past 10 years Ive been working for a local company and would travel here nearly every month with Willow. I am also familiar with working with the PTO as Willow is my 7th child I have raised which has had me working within the school system since the early 80s . The rest of your officers are made up of seasoned Fostoria PTO veterans: Mindy Lance: Vice President, Addi McElroy: Secretary, Bonnie Counts: Treasurer (FIES) and Jason Lewis: Treasurer (Riley & Longfellow). We are all committed to making sure this years PTO is very effective and powerful, supporting all of our schools in a very positive, fun and creative way. Here are some of the activities we have lined up: *Candle Sale *Halloween Trick or Treat & Bakery Bingo *Spirit Wear Sale *Santa Shop *McDonald's Peelers *Parent and child play and learn events Heres how you can help! Through the efforts of the PTO and all of its great teachers and parents we are able to fund things like field trips, new learning software, playground equipment and much more. Of course wed love you to attend the meetings, the next is October 7 th at 5:30. Dont have day care? Bring your kids well provide supervision, snacks and help with their homework. Well even have snacks for the adults. Next meeting is salad night. Dont have time for meetings? Just sign up to help with an event, every month theres something going on that would only involve a few hours of your time. Have a little bit more time to spare, then help chair an event! Wed love to hear from you! Facebook.com/RileyLongfellowP Email: ptopresident@fostoriaschools.org Sincerely, Caryl cstone@wepresent.com

My Wonderful PAX School

We are starting our second year of implementing PAX Good Behavior Game at Riley School. This is very exciting because we have seen such great results with teachers increasing teaching time while decreasing disruptive behaviors in the classroom. Over the past year, we have shared information about PAX through newspaper articles highlighting the launching of PAX in our school as well as in the spring when Riley experienced an opportunity of professional film crews coming in to film PAX in Action within the classrooms. A selection of students also presented a short play at a board meeting last year highlighting components of PAX. Just in case you missed these exciting highlights from last year, there will be many opportunities throughout this school year to hear and learn about PAX in our school We are making our school a Wonderful PAX School every day, but we need your help. Our PAX motto has been I better my world and I better myself. We want our students to see they can not only spread PAX in our school, but everywhere they go. Starting next week your child will be bringing home a book called, My Wonderful PAX School and will be asked to complete chapters at home with you. Each month, I will highlight a chapter and encourage your child to complete it with the help of you. To make it even more exciting, when they bring their book back to school with the completed chapter, they will receive an additional 100 minutes for their class to add to their PAX games. This can be very beneficial for their class! Each of the classes are in competition working to earn the most PAX minutes which are added up at the end of the month rewarding the top 1st grade and top 2nd grade class with a BIG PAX Prize!!! We are seeing such rewarding behaviors with many of our students and are hoping you can have a Wonderful PAX home too!
