Assignments for ArcGIS Online Mapping Field-Collected Data

Mapping Field-Collected Data Assignment Answer Key

Part A: Collecting Date
Q1
Define a spatial question about a feature of interest in your local community. For example, are there an adequate number of trees in your school yard to provide shade? Are there enough outdoor water fountains on the school grounds and are they appropriately placed for students to access them? Where are the nearest bus-stops relative to your house? Answers will vary among students.

Q2

Write a paragraph to explain why you choose this spatial question for the assignment. Answers will vary among students.

Part B: Mapping your Data in ArcGIS Online (What is where?)

Q3
Write a paragraph to explain the concept of absolute location and then describe the absolute location(s) of features you have mapped. Answers will vary. Refer to the Background Document for an explanation of absolute location. Students should include in their answer the latitude and longitude coordinates for each feature they mapped.

Part C: Analyzing your Data in ArcGIS Online (Why there?)

Q4
Record the distance, in a table, you measured between the field-collected feature and the actual location of the feature. Compare the distance to the accuracy measurement found in the features attribute tables. The distance (calculated in metres) will vary among the students, but should be close to the value in the features attribute table, under the Accuracy column.

Q5

Examine the absolute location of the actual features using the Location icon. Report the coordinates of the features you collected in the field and explain the differences. Answers will vary. The latitude and longitude coordinates for the location of the actual features will be in the answer. Refer to the Background Document for an explanation on the accuracy of point locations collected from a smartphone.

Part D: Acting on your Findings (Why is this important?)

Q6
Review your map and write a paragraph to answer your initial geographic question (hint, look for patterns and relationships in your data relative to the question you posed at the start of the inquiry

process, e.g., Are there enough drinking fountains on the school grounds? Are the nearest bus-stops too far away from my house?). Answers will vary among students.

Q7

Write a paragraph to suggest how you could act on your findings and make a difference through social media, a letter or email to relevant decision makers. Answers will vary among students.
