The smell of rotten eggs applied to natural gas was still heavy in the
air nearly an hour after the first line broke on N. Mt. Juliet Road
around 3 p.m. Monday. Around 15 businesses and several homes
on an approximate four-block stretch of the street were evacuated
and traffic blocked off until around 6 p.m. Mt. Juliet City Manager
Randy Robertson said at the scene a 4-inch gas line ruptured. He
added Monday night that West Wilson Utility District workers, who
were digging in the area just in front of the Animal Care Center
beside the Mt. Juliet Library where the leak happened, were unsure
if the break occurred due to digging or a “seismic shock.” Such an
unexpected situation occurred just after the second rupture of the gas
line when a man refused to stop at the traffic blockade heading north
on Mt. Juliet Road. An unmarked MJPD car followed as the man
drove the truck rapidly before stopping at the US Post Office. The
man refused to cooperate and was asked to exit the truck. Although THE RIGHT TIRES AT THE RIGHT PRICE!
police reports were not available by press time Tuesday, sources on
the scene said the man had a “large hunting knife” in his truck, and
he was later submitted to tests by WEMA personnel on the scene. We’ll Beat Your

Mt. Juliet was chosen as the site of

a Tennessee Bureau of Investiga-
tion (TBI) mock child abduction
exercise on Friday, July 24. The
exercise was part of the certifica-
tion process for the TBI’s Middle
Tennessee Child Abduction Re-
sponse Team (CART) to make it
the fourth team in the country to
achieve that status. Members of
the TBI worked in conjunction
with the Mt. Juliet Police Department, Wilson County Sheriff’s Department, TEMA, the TN
Department of Safety, the FBI and US Marshals and were given a mock child abduction sce-
nario, conducted the investigation and recovery of the child, a MJPD Police Explorer. The
“abduction” took place behind an apartment complex near Charlie Daniels Park, where the
TBI CART team found a young girl’s purse and backpack. The mock investigation led them to
Charlie Daniels Park, where a search and rescue K-9 unit found the child and law enforcement
officials “apprehended” two suspects. Floy Turner with Fox
Valley Technical College, which implemented the training and
certification process, said Friday that her team would evaluate
the TBI’s investigation and write the recommendation but she
saw nothing that made her think the CART team would not
receive its certification. ~ Photo by Tomi L. Wiley

Mathnasium
Math Tip of the
Week
I cannot overstate the importance of multiplication facts to
be done effortlessly by kids. Over the past three years I have noticed
that the students that cannot multiply struggle far more than those
students that can. So much of math after 3rd grade is based on
being able to multiply and divide basic facts quickly. Start having your
child count by 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and so on through 12’s. This lets them
see how multiplication is just repeated addition. There is no replacing
practice of these facts. If a child cannot multiply, they will not be able
understand division and both are key to working with fractions and
other higher level topics in middle school. Ideally students should
have their tables memorized by the end of 3rd grade. So if your
child does struggle with multiplication facts, make that a priority this
HOTEL FURNITURE year. There is a wonderful website called www.multiplcation.com
that has several games that make it fun to practice. Practice in the
car, at home, just about anywhere. Once your child has mastered
