“Great Commission Connection”
As we present the 2009-2010 General Operating Budget, we
are seeking to go “the second mile” above the budget in giving
to missions. The Lord gave me a special burden months ago
to develop a new plan which provides a unique connection to
the missionaries overseas, in North America, Florida, and those
who equip them in the seminaries. As you may know, 6% of the
General Operating budget is allocated to the Southern Baptist
Cooperative Program and an additional 4% to other mission
causes. Thousands of dollars are raised in addition to that during the year for other
missions causes.
In October we will enlist at least 500 family units in our church to commit to a
long-term involvement with various missionaries. We will adopt an International
Mission Board family, a North American Mission Board family, and a missionary
from the state Convention and/or a faculty member from the seminaries. Our people
will communicate through various ways as they get to know these individuals
and families. They will pray for their concerns and utilize the latest in technology
to stay in touch. This gives a sense of ownership and relationship to missions. It
meets the challenge which we have in the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program
structure of supporting the greatest mission movement in the history of the world
and also being connected personally. All of the mission boards are on board with
this program.
Each family will make a yearly commitment to give at least $300 to an additional
Cooperative Program fund beyond our existing budget item, in addition to their tithes
and offerings to the church General Operating Budget, the building program, and
other missions causes and special offerings. We are already developing a “piggy”
bank for change. We cannot give directly to the missionaries but will give into our
church to send to the Cooperative Program and it’s distribution process. Hopefully,
“all boats will rise” in the ocean of missions. This added thrust will enable us to
recover lost ground during the recession and send more to the fields.
The key elements of this strategy include a lay champion and team from our
church, the launching of the strategy at our Missions Conference in October, the
enthusiastic cooperation of our denomination, and that “The God of Heaven will
give us success” (Nehemiah 2:20). Of course, more will be said later, but this
explains the GREAT COMMISSION CONNECTION.

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night
and Sunday morning worship services. Come and meet Dr. Wicker.

Prayer and Fellowship Night

Sunday, June 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel
Join together as a church family to pray and seek God’s will for our lives and
our church. The prayer time will be followed by a time of fellowship in the
Courtyard with funnel cakes and ice cream!
Janet’s Summer
Reading Club
Ladies, once again this year, join us for a precious time of book
discussions with our Senior Pastor’s wife, Janet Wicker. This year
promises to be even more exciting and rewarding than last year. The
books and dates picked for this year are:

June 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons

“Shadow of the Almighty”
by Elisabeth Elliot
This book tells the gripping story of the life and testament of
Jim Elliot. This very personal account by the woman who would
become his wife reveals a missionary story that is truly a heroic
spiritual pilgrimage. Original writings from Jim Elliot himself are
included and give insight into the heart of a man who could pray,
“Give me not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus.” It is considered a
modern Christian classic.

July 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons

“A Voice in the Wind”
by Francine Rivers
This novel is set in the first-century, during the great trials and
persecutions of the early church. The heroine is a young slave girl
named Hadassah who is torn by her love for a Roman aristocrat,
but clings to her faith in the living God for deliverance from the
forces of a decadent Rome. The lessons learned are as applicable
today as they were then!

August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons

“Five Conversations You Must Have With Your
Daughter” by Vicki Courtney
This brand-new book has been selected to help Moms who are
desperately trying to talk with their daughters about sensitive
issues in a Godly way. It will cause you to focus on helping your
daughters understand that they are more than what people see on
the outside and they do not need to grow up so fast. You will learn
how to dare your daughter to be virtuous.
