ANCHOR LINK: The fate of 54,000 engineering studentshangs in balanceafter Gujarat High Court rejects the states new

admission policyThe decision has comeafter some students filed a petition challenging the new system

(SEQUENCE OF BHAVIK PATEL ENTERING A COLLEGE) VO1: For 17-year-old Bhavik Patel.the joy of securing an engineering seat in a reputed college...has been short-lived

BITE OF BHAVIK PATEL: I got admission in LD College of Engineering and the classes had already startedBut the college has now put everything on holdThey are sayingwe may have to go through the admission process again.

(SHOTS OF COUNSELLING SESSIONS WITH STUDENTS FILLING THEIR CHOICES) VO2: This year.the Gujarat governmentchanged the process of preparing the merit list for engineering admissions (UNSURE IF WE SHOULD ADD THIS LINE- OR EXPLAIN THE WHOLE PROCESS IN A WALL GFX AFTER THIS PACKAGE) This process calculates the percentile of a candidate by taking into accounthis class 12 marksin relation to the total number of applicants to the university. instead of.the number of students who passed the board exam. This obviously puts the state board applicants at an advantage, as they are more in number compared to the CBSE applicants

BITE OF PH PATHAK, COUNSEL FOR PETITIONERS: The new system clearly discriminates against CBSE students. Alsothe court has found that the actual method of normalizing marks was not disclosed in advertisements and students were kept in the dark.

(SHOTS OF STUDENTS WHO FILED THE PETITION ENJOYING) VO3: The high court has directed that the merit list should be prepared in accordance with existing rules. But the government says.it will stand by its decision.

BITE OF VASUBEN TRIVEDI, STATE EDUCATION MINISTER: If the state tried to implement the judgement, it would be forced to violate the apex court order which had fixed July 31 as the last date for completing admissions in professional engineering courses. We are going to challenge the decision in the apex court.

BREATHE SHOTS OF WORRIED STUDENTS DISCUSSING

PTC: But in the whole processit is these students who suffer the most. While most engineering colleges across the country have already started their new academic year.the 54,000 odd studentswill have to wait and watch.. SIGNOFF
