If you design and manufacture pressure equipment (e.g. pressure vessels, steam generators, pressurised storage containers, industrial piping and safety or pressure accessories) with a maximum permissible pressure in excess of 0.5 bar, you need Certification for the equipment before it can be sold in the EU and European Economic Area. This certification is carried out by Germanischer Lloyd as a Notified Body in accordance with the EC Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC (PED), which came into force in May of 2002. The PED also applies to pressure equipment assemblies such as complex chemical process or power boiler plants. All pressure equipment covered by the PED must go through a conformity assessment procedure based on a modular classification determined by the level of hazard coming from the equipment. the society was founded 1867.
