They see the barrack on fire. Soldiers are exiting the barrack coughing. Steve and Jack go to assist the survivors. A corporal comes up to Steve. CORPORAL There are several men in there still, sir. Steve yells to Jack STEVEN Jack, see to these men. Ill see how bad it is inside. JACK Aye sir. Be careful in there, Steve. Steve goes inside the building. He sees smoke and fire. There are bodies lying on the floor. Steve checks out the bodies. He sees two soldiers trying to get up. He goes over to them. Steve helps the soldiers to their feet. The soldiers use Steve for support. Steve and the soldiers stagger out of the barrack. Both soldiers drop to the ground. Steve goes back into the barrack. He comes out with 2 more soldiers. He does this two more times, the last time with three soldiers. Flames can be seen coming through the roof. A last cry can be heard coming from the barrack. Steve hears the cry. He starts to go back into the barrack. Jack sees him go. JACK (CONTD) Steven, dont. Its to late 3

GIBBS What can you tell me about these packages on our desks? SECURITY OFFICER

They can in the mail a couple of days ago with instructions on the package not to deliver them until the 25th. They have already been x-ray and found to only contain books. They were deem safe or they wouldnt have been put on the desks GIBBS Thank you, Mike. That will be all The Security Guard leaves the area. Gibbs opens a drawer in his desk. He takes out a box cutter. He slices open the book and looks inside.. He smiles. INT. A BAR IN ARLINGTON, VA FEB. 25TH, 2011. EARLY EVENING Inside the bar is filled with young men and women drinking, either sitting at the bar or at booths and tables. A TV set is playing, sitting on a shelf behind the bar. On the TV is a report on an event that happened 20 years before. Sitting at the bar is PATRICK, a man of 60 years. He is watching the TV. Bartender comes over to Patrick BARTENDER Can I get you anything? PATRICK Yes. Could you turn up the sound on the TV? I want to hear this report. BARTENDER I will, but youll have to order something to remain in that stool PATRICK Fine. Ill take a beer. Bartender hands Patrick the remote. He goes to a small fridge in back of him, opens the door and pulls out bottle of beer. He pops it open and brings it over to Patrick. He places it on the bar. BARTENDER That will be two dollars, sir. Patrick takes out his wallet from his front pocket. He opens it and takes out two onedollar bills and places them on the counter. Bartender picks up the bills and walks away. 5

Two young men walk into the bar. They sit down at the bar next to Patrick. Bartender brings each of them a beer. The young man next to Patrick is called COLLINS COLLINS Hey, Pop. This is a sports bar. Put the game on. PATRICK After this report is over COLLINS I dont care about any report from 20 years ago PATRICK I feel sorry for you boy. 28 soldiers died that night. One of them was my son. He pulled nine survivors out before he was killed himself. They gave him the Medal of Honor. Collins give a laugh of disbelief COLLINS Pop, do you even know what a Medal of Honor is Collins reaches for the remote. Patrick backhands him. Collins falls of the stool. Pat looks down at Collins PATRICK My son was a Marine, boy. A hero. If you ever disrespect him again, Ill break your neck Collins gets off the floor. He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. He moves towards Pat Collins friend, who name is BATEMEN stands up between them. Bartender comes over to them. He looks at Collins BARTENDER I want no trouble in here, Collins. Take your beef outside (To Pat) Why dont you finish your beer and go. I dont need any trouble in here. Pat stands up. He looks at the bartender. PATRICK In order to finish the beer, I would have to start it first Patrick leaves the bar. Collins and Batemen go after him.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE BAR. NIGHT COLLINS Hey old man. Im not finished with you. BATEMEN Collins, leave him alone. Cant you see that he is hurting over what happened 20 years ago COLLINS I dont care. No one hits me and just gets to walk away and I do nothing about it Collins runs up to Pat. Pats back is to him. Collins reaches out with both hands and gives Pat a shove on the shoulder blades. Pat lurches forward a couple of feet. Pat turns to face Collins PATRICK Dont make fight you, boy. I may look old to you, but I am able to defend myself. Batemen comes up to Collins and Pat. Collins looks at Batemen. COLLINS Do you hear him Batemen. This old geezer thinks he can take on a couple of Marine Recon. , BATEMEN Collins, its not worth it.

Collins does not listen. He moves in on Pat. Collins throws a punch. Pat blocks it and steps back. Collins keeps coming at Pat. Collins takes another swing at Pat. Pat grabs Collins arms and turns him around. Pat bends Collins arm behind his back Collins stars to struggle. PATRICK Settle down boy or Ill break your arm. BATEMEN Let him go. I cant let you harm my friend, Pat lets go of Collins. Pat pushes him towards Batemen. Collins turns to face Pat. Collins tries using Martial Arts. Pat blocks all of Collins moves. Pat lands a shot on Collins chin. Collins goes down unconscious. 7

Batemen goes after Pat. He throws a couple swings at Pat. Pat hits Batemen. Batemen goes down unconscious. Pat stands over them. We see a hand with a beer bottle. It strikes Pat on the back of his head. Pat goes down. A long shot of all three on the ground. INT. NCIS HEADQUARTERS MORNING NEXT DAY Gibbs is sitting at his desk. Tim, Tony and Ziva are also sitting at their desks. Gibbs phone rings. He picks it up. GIBBS Special Agent Gibbs Gibbs listens on the phone. The other agents stand up, backpacks in their hands. Gibbs replaces the receiver on the hook. Looks up at the three GIBBS (CONTD) Stand down. Routine assignment. Quantico has a civilian in lock up. Seems he assaulted two Marines last night. Ziva, youre with me. The rest of you can relax. Ziva and Gibbs go to the elevator. The doors open. They step in. The doors close. INT. COMMANDING OFFICER, QUANTICO BRIG, DAY Lt. WILLIAM MACKLAND, 27, stands behind his desk. Ziva and Gibbs stand in front. Mackland stands up. MACKLAND Special Agent Gibbs, I am Lt William Mackland Gibbs and Mackland shake hands. Gibbs introduces Ziva. GIBBS This is Special Agent Ziva David. Ziva and Mackland shake hands. Mackland gets down to business. MACKLAND Last night, at a bar in downtown bar in Arlington, called the Foxhole; a civilian that we have in lock up attacked two Marine Recon students. He claims that it was selfdefense and tat the Marines attacked him first. Mackland opens the top drawer of his desk. He pulls out two items. One is a zip lock bag with pieces of glass; the other item was a partly burnt ID card. Mackland hands

them both to Gibbs. He takes them. Gibbs put the glass in an evident pouch. He keeps the ID card out. GIBBS Is this the person you have in lock up? MACKLAND No. Its not his ID card. He says that it belongs to his son who was killed in the Gulf War. GIBBS Why call N.C.I.S.? MACKLAND I dont have the manpower to investigate this. Most of my personal are guards and patrolman. GIBBS I would like to speak with the suspect. MACKLAND Of course. If you will follow me I will take you to him. The three leave Macklands office. They walk down the corridor to the cell area. In the first cell is the suspect. Pat is lying on the bed facing the wall. There is a guard standing by the cell. He comes to attention upon seeing Mackland. MACKLAND (CONTD) How is our guest? GUARD Very quiet sir. Except to use the head an hour ago, he hasnt move MACKLAND Sir, I have a couple of visitors who would like to speak with you Pat rolls over and faces them. He sits up on the bed. He stands up and comes over to the cell door. Gibbs looks at Pat. GIBBS I am Special Agent Gibbs. This is Agent David. We are from N.C.I.S. PATRICK N.C.I.S. Again. Am I under arrest?

GIBBS Lt. Mackland called us and asked if we could investigate what happened last night PATRICK I was in a fight with two Marines or at least that is what Lt. Mackland told me and that I was found unconscious on the ground. Someone hit me with something. Pat faces the two men. Ziva moves to where she can see the back of Pats head. She sees the wound and brings it Gibbs attention. ZIVA Gibbs, there is dried blood on the wound. It also looks like the head was cut. There maybe bits of glass still in the wound. Ziva turns to Mackland ZIVA (CONTD) Lt., Why was he taken to the hospital? MACKLAND He refused treatment. GIBBS He should have been taken to the emergency room, anyway. Ziva takes out her cell phone and flips it open. She asks Pat to look her way. He does so and Ziva snaps a picture of him. Ziva walks a few feet away from Pat and makes a phone call. Once done he closes the cover and puts the cell phone back in her pocket. She comes back over to Gibbs and Mackland. GIBBS (CONTD) What did the doctors say in their report about the two Marines? MACKLAND I havent got their report yet GIBBS How long have they been in sick bay? MACKLAND Since 2300 hours last night 10

Gibbs looks at his watch GIBBS Its 1000 hours now. Does it take more than 11 hours to receive a report from sick bay MACKLAND Agent Gibbs, we are very short staffed at the moment. I am currently the only officer in charge. The M.A.A. Is a Gunny Sergeant. The only other personal I have is the Corporal here and two Lances, who go out if there is any trouble. I am due three replacements in seven days, two officers, who are investigators, and a Senior Master Sergeant. Its no excuse, Agent Gibbs, but I try to do the best I can with what I have. GIBBS No one is blaming you, Lt. Mackland. We are going to take Pat with us. We have the resources to clear up this mystery. Lt. Mackland motions to the Corporal. He unlocks the cell and opens it. Pat walks out. GIBBS (CONTD) Pat, we are going to transport you to N.C.I.S. Headquarters. PATRICK I am your prisoner GIBBS You are not under arrest. You are going to headquarters because we have the resources to help you. Gibbs thanks Mackland. They shake hands. Then Gibbs, Ziva and Pat leave the brig area. EXT. BRIG PARKING LOT. GIBBS CAR. DAY. Gibbs tells Pat to get in the back seat. Pat does so. Gibbs gets in on the drivers side and Ziva in the passengers seat. Gibbs turns to Pat. 11

GIBBS If you feel dizzy or feel like lying down, go ahead. If you feel like you need to heave let me know and Ill pull over to the side of the road. PATRICK You are going through a lot of trouble for a prisoner. GIBBS You are not a prisoner, but a person of interest. At least a victim. Well find out one way of another. ZIVA Gibbs, he should see a doctor. That wound on the back of his head is very serious. He could have a severe concussion. GIBBS He will see a doctor back at headquarters. What I would like to know is how a man of his age would defeat two Marine Recon. PATRICK I cant remember, Agent Gibbs. Only that they were on the ground at the same time I was. ZIVA While you were speaking with Lt. Mackland I took a picture of our passenger and forwarded it to Abby to see if she can find a match. GIBBS When we get to the office, Ill have Abby get a set of fingerprints sent to AFISE also, (Gibbs looks in the rear view mirror at Pat) We will need your permission to do so. PATRICK Why would you need my permission GIBBS

12

As I said before, for the present, youre someone who needs our help and if we can find what your last name, we can contact someone to come and help you. PATRICK Its not as if I know anyone in high places, especially in the Navy. I use to know a couple of JAG officers, but I cant remember their names. INT. N.C.I.S. HEADQUARTERS DAY The elevator doors opened and Ziva, Gibbs and Pat walk out. Ziva goes over to her desk and sits down. Gibbs and Pat go to the elevator on the other side of the room. The doors opened and they walk in. Tony looks at Ziva. TONY Who is that with Gibbs? ZIVA He is the one that we were sent to pick up this morning. His name is Patrick. We dont know if it is his first or last name. Even he cant remember or the fight he was in last night. TONY Perhaps he is covering up for the fact that he did commit the crime and now pretends he cant remember anything. ZIVA And then hit himself behind his head with a beer bottle. If you have seen the injury to the back of his head you wouldnt have made such a stupid statement. INT BASEMENT AREA DAY The elevator carrying Gibbs and Pat stops. The doors open. They step out and walk across the corridor and into autopsy. Autopsy is set up as before, except there are no bodies on the tables. It is spotlessly clean. DR. DONALD MALLARD is sitting at his desk. He sees them come in and gets up and comes over to them.

13

GIBBS Pat, this is Dr. Donald Mallard. Ducky, Pat. They shake hands. GIBBS (CONTD) For once Ducky, you have a patient who can answer you when you speak. PATRICK I told you Agent Gibbs; it isnt necessary to give me medical aid. GIBBS I am going to insist Pat, because I need you alert. I have many questions to ask and hopefully youll have the answers that will clear up this mystery. Gibbs reaches into his shirt pocket and takes out the partly burnt ID card. He hands it to Pat, who takes it. GIBBS (CONTD) This is one mystery that you can clear up right now. This was found on you. Clearly, it is not you pictured on the card. PATRICK That is my son, Steven. GIBBS Do you know where he is stationed? PATRICK He died on Feb. 25th, 1991 at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, along with 28 others. GIBBS When the scud missile hit the barrack. PATRICK Yes. Only he died pulling out the survivors that were hurt. He saved nine soldiers before he died. They awarded him the Medal of Honor. GIBBS Im sorry for your loss, Pat

14

PATRICK Thank you Agent Gibbs. May I have the ID card back? It has great value to me. GIBBS I will, Pat, but first I need to use it for one last. Let Dr. Mallard fix you up and we can talk later. Gibbs leaves autopsy. Ducky checked the back of Pats head. He checks out the wound. DUCKY My, that is a nasty gash you have there. Sit on the table DUCKY (CONTD) Doctors order Pat complies. He sits on the table. Then Ducky puts on a pair of gloves and begins to probe the wound. As he is ding this Pat grimaces in pain. DUCKY (CONTD) I know it must hurt, Pat, but I have to see how much damage there is to your head. PATRICK Do what you have to do, Dr. Mallard. What did Agent Gibbs mean when he said you finally have a patient who can answer you back when you talk to them. DUCKY Jethro didnt tell you. This is the autopsy department and I am the M.E. Who works on them PATRICK Oh great DUCKY Dont worry my boy. I have a full medical license. It is required to become an M.E. So I can help live patients as well. PATRICK

Pat does not move

15

Even though we just met, Dr. Mallard, I feel that I can trust you. DUCKY Thank you. And please call me Ducky. My friends call me by that name. The door to autopsy open and in walks Jim Palmer. Ducky turns to see him coming in DUCKY (CONTD) Ah, Mr. Palmer, youre just in time. We have a live patient to treat and I can use your help. Palmer comes over to Ducky PALMER What can I do to help you, Dr. Mallard? DUCKY Take a look at this wound on the back of Pats head and tell me what you think. Palmer begins to exam the head would. As he does Ducky speaks. DUCKY (CONTD) Pat this is my assistant Jim Palmer. He has been working here eight years now. He knows a great deal about these kinds of wounds. Palmer continues to look around the wound. He finishes and speaks. PALMER Someone hit him pretty hard with a solid object. DUCKY Are you sure he was hit with something. Maybe he fell. PALMER My best guess, Dr. Millard, is that if he was even pushed or fell backwards he would have enough reaction time that his hands would help him break his fall. Palmer faces Pat from the front. He takes a hold of Pats wrists and turns his hands over to look at the palms. He sees no bruises or lacerations on them. PALMER (CONTD) 16

His palms are free from cuts and bruises, so yes, my guess is that he was hit from behind. DUCKY In this case you would be right Mr. Palmer. There is evident to suggest he was hit with a glass object, most likely a beer bottle, since broken pieces of glass were found near the area were Pat was attacked. Mr. Palmer, get two pairs of surgical gloves, some antiseptic swabs and scissors. Also bring over the portable X-Ray machine. I want to make sure there is no glass embedded in the wound or that there are no fractures in the skull area. Palmer goes to gather the items that Ducky asks for. PATRICK From your accent Dr. Mallard, I would say youre from Scotland. DUCKY I am from that country. PATRICK I thought so. I had a friend who was from Scotland. Actually he was much older than me. He was more like a father to me. I lived in an apartment above his bookstore on Kenmore Square. DUCKY Where is Kenmore Square? PATRICK You have never heard of it. It is a famous street. The section I lived in is only a few blocks from the ballpark. DUCKY What city is this street located? PATRICK Boston DUCKY Ah yes Boston. Beautiful city. I have visited there a few times when I was younger. I walked the Boston 17

Common area. There is a great deal of history in that area. Have you ever walked the Freedom Trail? PATRICK I have taken my son and daughter along the trail many times. DUCKY You live near Fenway Park. That is the name of the ballpark is it not? PATRICK Yes. I would take Steve and Melissa, my daughter, to the park to watch the games. Sometimes, my wife, Melinda would join us. I made sure I had at least one day a week that was family only. DUCKY Tell me about your friend from Scotland. PATRICK He had retired from the R.A.F. And decided to live in Boston. He brought a used bookstore with the help of a lawyer friend of mine. He taught me how to fight and defend myself. His name was Michael Shorten. Palmer returns with the portable X-Ray machine with two plates. He hands the plates to Ducky He in turns places a plate in a tray at the head of the exam table. The portable X-Ray machine is of standard issue. There are two lead vests draped from one of the hook. Ducky takes one of the vests and puts it on. Palmer comes back with medical supplies on a tray. He places the tray on a protected table and then he puts on the other vest. DUCKY Pat, I want you to lie down on your stomach with your forehead on the end of the table. INT. FORENSIC LAB. DAY Gibbs walks into the Forensic Lab where he finds Abby looking at her computer screen. She is deep in thought and does not hear him coming in. She has buds in her ears that go to an I-Pod clipped to her lab coat pocket. In Gibbs hand is a cup of Caf-Pow. Gibbs comes up to Abby and stands behind her. Abby senses something behind her, turns to see Gibbs. She brings her hand to her chest and takes a deep breath. She balls her hand into a fist and lightly hits Gibbs in the chest. 18

ABBY Gibbs, you could have given me a heart attack sneaking in like that. GIBBS What have you got for me, Abs? ABBY Nothing yet. I uploaded the picture Ziva sent me from her cell phone. Along with photo recognition program, I also programmed the computer to find any pictures of our John Doe in any newspapers from the East Coast. Gibbs takes out the military ID card belonging to Pat. He hands it to Abby, who takes it. She looks at it. ABBY (CONTD) This cant be our John Doe. Even taking the picture and regressing it to this age and this person looks to be 1921 years old, it would not match. GIBBS I know Abs. Our John Doe, as you call him, says that his name is Patrick. He told me that the ID belonged to his son Steven. He was killed during the Scud Missile attack that hit the barrack in Saudi 20 years ago. I want you to a second photo recognition using this photo from the ID and see what you can come up with. ABBY Do you know how many Stevens that were stationed during Desert Storm? GIBBS Ill cut the odds down for you Abs. That is a Marine Corps ID. It says Navy Department on the back. ABBY It will still take a while, Gibbs GIBBS Do what you can Abs. One thing else, redo that photo on Pat, regressing it 20 years and see if you can find anything. 19

ABBY Will do Gibbs. Gibbs hands Abby the Caf Pow. He gives her a kiss on the forehead. He leaves the lab. INT. BULLPEN AREA. DAY Gibbs stands in front of Zivas desk. She looks up. GIBBS Ziva, I have a long shot for you. See if you can pull up the records from 20 years ago on anyone named Steven that was awarded the Medal of Honor during Desert Shield or Desert Storm. Ziva begins to type in the information on her computer. Gibbs goes back to his desk and sits down. A few seconds later Ziva speaks to Gibbs across the desks. ZIVA There were three Medal of Honors awarded in the Gulf War to those named Steven. There was Steven David Pierce, Steven Michael Robbins and Andrew Steven McBride. We could eliminate the third one since Steven wasnt his first name. GIBBS Not necessary. A lot of people go by their middle name. ZIVA Ill try and see if I can pull up any additional information on the three. INT. BULLPEN AREA. DAY (AN HOUR LATER) Gibbs is sitting at his desk. Ducky walks up to the desk. Gibbs looks up GIBBS How is your patient, Ducky? DUCKY Resting at the moment. GIBBS Is he ready to be questioned? 20

DUCKY Not yet. The wound to his head, though not serious, had to be cleaned. He didnt require stitches, but there were bits of glass embedded in the wound. I couldnt give him anything for the pain because of the concussion. It might mask a serious problem later on. Thankfully there is no skull fracture of any kind. He is resting on one of the tables. I left Mr. Palmer with him in case there are any emergencies. GIBBS Did you talk to him? DUCKY Yes. He talked a great deal and as his doctor I would be betraying a confidence if I repeat what he said. Jethro, he is not a criminal. I believe that very much. GIBBS I dont think he is either, Doc, but if he told you anything that can help him in anyway, even if it means betraying the trust he has in you. DUCKY He never invoked Patient-Doctor confidentiality. The only reason why I am going to tell you what he said is because it could help him. GIBBS One second Ducky Gibbs stands up and whistled. He waves for the others to come over. They do. GIBBS (CONTD) Consider this a briefing, Doctor. You have the floor. DUCKY Very well Agent Gibbs. Pat and I did have a talk while i was fixing him up. He told me that he lives in Boston on a street called Kenmore Square. TONY Did he say which part of the square? It covers a lot of area. I believe there are a couple of colleges in the area.

21

DUCKY Why Mr. DiNozzo, I didnt know you knew the area so well. TONY When I played basketball for Ohio State, we played against Boston College a number of times. So I got to know the downtown area of Boston very well. DUCKY He mentioned that he could see Fenway Park from the windows in his apartment and that the park is a few blocks away. He said that he would take his son and daughter to the games when the team was in town. Sometimes his wife would join them. TONY I know the area he is talking about. But it is completely a business section. There are no apartment buildings in that area. DUCKY If you let me finish Tony, I was going to say that the apartment is over a bookstore that was owned by a friend of his he met in 1967. He has lived in that apartment for the last 45 years. He also mentioned the owner of the bookstore. Pat knew that I was from Scotland from my accent and told me his friend was from there. He gave the owners name as Michael Shorten. Jethro, I knew a Michael Shorten when I was with the RAF. Now I know how Pat learned to fight and defend himself. Michael was later transferred to the SAS and was a self-defense instructor. And he must have taught Pat to well. GIBBS Did you get this Michael Shortens address or his phone number from Pat? We could call him and clear this matter up. DUCKY You cant Jethro. Michael Shorten died in 1996. TONY 22

Road trip Boss?

GIBBS Yes. Take McGee with you since you both know the area well. Get a copy of the picture of Pat from Abby. Ask around. If he really lives in that area for over 40 years, someone must know who he is. Tony and Tim go to their desks and pick up their gear. They go to the front elevator and enter when the doors opened. Back to Ducky and Gibbs. DUCKY Jethro, when you brought Pat into autopsy I though I had seen him before. Back in 96 I attended Michaels funeral. Pat was much younger then. I was never introduced to him, so I dont know how I can help you. GIBBS You have helped a lot, Ducky. Let me know when Pat is well enough to be questioned. INT. CONFERENCE ROOM. DAY. A FEW HOURS LATER Pat, Gibbs and Ducky are sitting around a table in the conference room. GIBBS Are you feeling any better, Pat? PATRICK Some. That sleep I got in autopsy helped. Thank you, Dr. Mallard. DUCKY Your welcome Pat. I need to tell you that I told Agent Gibbs what you told me when I was treating you. PATRICK Its all right Dr. Mallard. GIBBS

23

Dr. Mallard has told me you are from Boston and that you live in an apartment over a bookstore. Can you tell me anymore about the area you live in. Maybe we can find someone who knows you. PATRICK Not that I can remember at the moment, Agent Gibbs. I am trying. DUCKY We know, Pat. An injury, such as yours, will take time to heal and some more time to get you memory back. But it will come back. GIBBS Why did you come to Arlington, Pat? PATRICK I went to visit Stevens grave on the 20th anniversary of his death. GIBBS Why did you go to the Foxhole in Arlington? PATRICK Whats the Foxhole? GIBBS Its a bar were you had the fight with the two Marines. PATRICK I dont remember being in any bar. I dont even drink. DUCKY Jethro, lets take a break for a few minutes. I dont want my patient getting aggregated. He has been through enough. GIBBS I would like to accommodate you Ducky, but I need to get the facts if we are going to help him. PATRICK Do you think it will be ok to have some water, Doctor?

24

Ducky stands up and goes over to the water cooler at the back of the room. GIBBS You mentioned that your son was awarded the Medal of Honor while he was in Saudi. I had Ziva look up any Stevens that were awarded the medal. There were three. So we have three possible last names for your son. They are Pierce, Robbins or McBride. Do these name mean anything to you. PATRICK I dont believe so GIBBS Was Steven his middle name? PATRICK I dont believe so either. GIBBS Well, Ziva is looking further. Ducky comes back to the table. He has in his hand a coffee cup filled with water. He hands the cup to Pat. He drinks the water in one gulp. PATRICK Thank you Dr. Mallard. DUCKY When was the last time you ate, Pat? PATRICK At least 24 hours ago. I am feeling a little hungry. GIBBS Do you have a place to stay, Pat? PATRICK No. Not that I can remember. DUCKY Jethro, I can take him home with me. At least there I can watch him. GIBBS

25

No, Ill take him to my place. There might some more questions I need to ask him. PATRICK Agent Gibbs, you asked a while ago, if there was anyone I knew in the area. I seem to remember a lawyer in JAG. Her name is Bree Bryce, but she is probably retired by now. GIBBS Ill check on it. Pat, Gibbs and Ducky stand up from the table. They leave the room. Ducky goes in one direction, while Gibbs and Pat go downstairs to Gibbs desk. Ziva is still at her desk. GIBBS (CONTD) Pat, why dont you wait by the elevator, I need to speak with Ziva for a minute. Pat goes over to the elevator and waits for Gibbs there. He goes over to Zivas desk. GIBBS (CONTD) Anything more from the Medal of Honor Society on those three Stevens ZIVA No. They promised to fax me anything they find. I can wait a couple of hours to see if it comes in. If we had his serial number we could go directly to the Navy Department. GIBBS I have an assignment for you. First I need you to call JAG Headquarters in Falls Church to the personal department and ask them if a Bree Bryce was assigned there and have then fax the results. ZIVA Will do Gibbs GIBBS Then, I need you go to a bar in Arlington called the Foxhole and see if anyone remembers Pat being there and what led up to the fight. Bring a picture of him. You can get a copy from Abby. 26

ZIVA No need. I still have his picture on my cell. GIBBS After your done come back to the office and check to see if those faxes come in. Call if they do. ZIVA Will do, Gibbs. GIBBS Ill see you tomorrow, Ziva. ZIVA Are you taking Pat to your house right now. GIBBS Yes, so you can call me there. Gibbs leaves Zivas desk. He goes over to join Pat at the elevator. The doors open and they step in. Ziva watches them go. She picks up her phone EXT. OUTSIDE THE FOXHOLE. NIGHT Ziva is standing outside the Foxhole. She is looking in the bar window. She sees that the bar is hopping. She goes inside INT. FOXHOLE BAR. NIGHT. Ziva walks over to the bar area. She sits down on one of the stools. The bar is full of patrons, mostly young men and women drinking together. The bartender, the same one from the other night, sees Ziva and comes over to her. BARTENDER What can I get you? Ziva pulls out her wallet from her pocket and shows the Bartender her ID and badge. BARTENDER (CONTD) What can I do for N.C.I.S? Ziva takes out her cell phone and flips it open. She shows the Bartender the picture of Pat on her phone.

ZIVA Do you know this person? BARTENDER Yeah. He was here the other night. He demanded to watch a certain program on the TV. ZIVA Was he drinking? BARTENDER Yeah. He had a lot to drink and then picked a fight with two of my customers. He hit one of them. I thought he was going to bust the place up until I threw him out. He waited outside for the two Marines and proceeded to continue the fight out there. ZIVA Did you see who hit him over the head with a beer bottle? BARTENDER No. But whoever did saved those Marines lives. I thought he was going to kill them. ZIVA Why didnt you try to stop him? BARTENDER Are you kidding? And end up like those two Marines. ZIVA A big strong guy like you. You must have at least fifty pounds on him. BARTENDER Those Marines were strong too. Look what happened to them. ZIVA Perhaps your right, you should have stayed out of it. BARTENDER Listen lady. Im no coward. But I cant afford to get into trouble. I have a business to run and if I am in the hospital, Ill have to shut the door.

28

ZIVA Are you the one who call the Quantico Master at Arms. BARTENDER Yes. Now Lady, if you are finished with the questions, either buy something to drink or leave. I have other customers to attend to. ZIVA Ill take a club soda. And its Agent David, not lady. The Bartender takes a glass from under the bar. He Puts ice in the glass and then fills it club soda. He places the glass on the counter in front of Ziva. BARTENDER That will be $2.50 Ziva takes three one-dollar bills and hands them to the Bartender. ZIVA Keep the change. The Bartender gives Ziva a look that said gee can you spare it. He walks away. Ziva replaces the cell phone back in her pocket. She picks up the glass and drinks from it. She looks over the Bartender and sees he is busy with other customers. She pours the rest of the club soda in another glass next to her. She takes out a zip lock bag and places the glass in the bag. Ziva stands up and walks out of the bar. A second later another customer, male, follows her. Ziva senses the intruder. She turns to defend herself. The follower holds up his hand to signal no trouble. MALE I heard you in the bar. The Bartender wasnt telling the whole truth. I was here last night. Ill tell you what really happened. INT. GIBBS LIVING ROOM. NIGHT. Pat is resting on Gibbs couch. The room is dark. Pat looks over at the basement and sees a light under the door. Pat stands up and goes over to the door. He opens the door and goes in. Pat sees Gibbs working on his boat. GIBBS 29

Good evening. Didnt mean to wake you. PATRICK (Closes the door. Comes down the stairs) I was already awake, Agent Gibbs. Pat comes over to Gibbs at the boat. GIBBS Call me Jethro or Gibbs like everyone else. PATRICK It looks like it will be a great looking boat when its completed. GIBBS I hope so. PATRICK I guess building a boat is a lot like writing a book. Its a work in art in itself. GIBBS Are you writing a book? PATRICK I think so. At least I would like to. After all I told Dr. Mallard I lived in an apartment over a bookstore. I knew the owner. I must of read a great deal of the books he had for sale. Pat suddenly let out a groan. He places a hand to his head and almost falls over. Gibbs helps Pat over to one of the stools by the tool table. Pat sits down. GIBBS Do you need me to call Ducky. PATRICK Im all right. I just felt a little dizzy for a second there. Im all right now. INT. N.C.I.S. HEADQUARTERS NIGHT.

30

Ziva comes out of the elevator. She goes over to her desk. She puts on the light. She is alone. She places her backpack on the desk. She goes over to the fax machine in the back of the office. In the tray is a sheet of paper She picks it up and looks at it. She pulls out her cell phone and flips it open. INT. GIBBS BASEMENT. NIGHT. Gibbs hears his cell phone rings. He picks it up and flips it open. ZIVA Gibbs its Ziva. I just got back to Headquarters. GIBBS Rule 30, Ziva. ZIVA There is someone with you. GIBBS Yes. ZIVA I have the information you wanted from that Bartender. There is something odd about him. I managed to get a set of fingerprints from a glass he handled. GIBBS Leave it in Abbys lab with a note on it to find out who he really is. ZIVA There is also a witness. He told me what happened the other night. GIBBS Did you get a statement from him? ZIVA Yes. One other thing, JAG Headquarters faxed me the answer to your request. Bad news for Pat., there is no Bree Bryce ever stationed at Falls Church. There was a James Bryce stationed there. He retired in 1996, after three years as head of JAG. Maybe Pat got the names mixed up.

31

GIBBS Maybe. Thank you Ziva. See you in the morning. Ziva closes down her cell phone. She goes back to her desk and gets her backpack. Ziva goes to the elevator at the back of the office She steps in. As the door closes the fax machine starts up again. A slip of paper comes out of the machine and rests in the tray. INT. GIBBS BASEMENT. NIGHT.

PATRICK Something wrong Gibbs. GIBBS That was Ziva. We got a fax from Fall Church. There was no Bree Bryce stationed at JAG. There was a James Bryce. Could you have gotten the names mixed up? PATRICK No. I know Bree. She is as real to me as you are standing there. Im not lying to you. GIBBS Never said you were.

INT. NCIS HEADQUARTERS MORNING NEXT DAY. Gibbs is sitting at his desk, as are McGee and DiNozzo. Ziva walks up to her desk and places her backpack on the top. She opens it and takes out a folder. She walks over to Gibbs desk. She hands Gibbs the folder. He takes it. ZIVA This is my report on last night. In short the Bartender says that Pat had been drinking heavily and it was he who started the fight with those Marines. The Bartender said Pat left, but waited outside for them and continued the fight. It was the Bartender who called the Quantico Master at Arms, but also claims he doesnt know who hit Pat with the beer bottle. He decided to stay out of it for his own safely. Then there is the other witness who told me the opposite. GIBBS 32

What is your conclusion, Ziva. What does your gut tell you?

ZIVA That the Bartender is lying and he knows very well who hit Pat over the head and who may have taken his wallet. Ive put that in my report.

GIBBS Did you include the fax from JAG in your report? Yes. ZIVA

GIBBS Abby should have an answer on those fingerprints on the glass you left in her lab. The phone on Gibbs desk rings. He picks it up and says Gibbs. He listens for a few seconds. GIBBS (CONTD) Thanks Abby. Ill be right down. Gibbs places the receiver back on the hook. He looks up at Ziva. GIBBS (CONTD) Thanks Ziva. Ill read your report over. Meanwhile, see if you can find any more information on that Bartender especially his financial records. ZIVA Will do Gibbs. Where is Pat now? GIBBS Ducky took him to autopsy to check him over. He brought a doctor friend of his who specialty is concussion cases. INT. AUTOPSY ROOM. DAY.

33

Pat sits on the same table as he did the day before. There is another person with him. He is Dr. JACK BRYANT, 67. He and Ducky have been friends for many years. DUCKY Pat, this is Dr. Jack Bryant. He is a specialist in concussion cases especially those that are sports related. Pat and Bryant shake hands

BRYANT Dr. Mallard has told me you were hit from behind with a bottle of some kind. Do you remember being hit? PATRICK I remember being hit, but didnt see who did it. BRYANT Do you remember being in an altercation with two other persons? PATRICK So I have been told BRYANT Do you remember your last name? No. PATRICK

BRYANT Do you remember any family members? PATRICK I had a wife named Melinda and a son named Steven. There is also my daughter, Melissa. BRYANT Do you know where we can find your daughter? PATRICK I cant remember. I know she is married to a Marine, but I cant remember his name or where he is stationed.

34

BRYANT One last question, Pat, can you remember why you came to Arlington in the first place? PATRICK I came to visit my sons grave. He was killed 20 years ago on the 25th. BRYANT Do you know what day it is today? PATRICK I believe it is the 27th. Last night while I was with Agent Gibbs, in his basement, I experience a dizzy spell. They come and go. BRYANT Thats good to know, Pat. (To Ducky) Why isnt Pat in the hospital? It is clear he is suffering from a serve concussion. The memory lipases and dizzy spells are a clear sign. DUCKY I know Jack, but Pat refuses to be admitted BRYANT He needs a CAT scan. The dizziness could be a sign of a hematoma. DUCKY I took some x-Rays. I didnt see any signs of blood. I know it is not conclusive. BRYANT Lets take a look at the wound. Ducky begins to peel the bandage tape from Pats head. He winces a couple of times. With the bandage off Bryant looks at the wound. BRYANT (CONTD) It looks like the skin was broken, but only on the surface. The thickness of his hair must of kept a lot of the glass shards from cutting into scrap. DUCKY 35

There were some shards on the surface, but with the help of Mr. Palmer I was able to clean them out. BRYANT How is young Jimmy? To bad he is not here today. I would have liked to see him. DUCKY Ill tell him you were here.. He would have liked to see you too. BRYANT To bad hes not into sport medicine. He would have been excellent in that field. DUCKY Pat, I am going to have to clean the wound again. PATRICK I trust you to do what is best, Dr. Mallard, as before. Ducky begins to clean the wound. Bryant faces Pat. BRYANT Pat, I would like you to come to my clinic to let me treat you. As Ducky told you I am tops in my field when it comes to concussions. Thats why all the sports teams send me their players if they are in need of medical help. PATRICK You want to do that CAT scan? Yes. BRYANT

PATRICK Do you agree, Dr. Mallard? DUCKY Dr. Bryant is the expert, Pat. If he says that you need a CAT scan, then you can trust his judgment. PATRICK Very well, Dr. Bryant. I put myself in your hands. 36

The autopsy doors opens. Ducky and Bryant look up to see Gibbs come into the room. Gibbs comes over to Pat. He is holding the report Ziva gave him. GIBBS Ducky, are you finished with Pat for the moment. DUCKY Yes. Dr. Bryant wants to take Pat to his clinic for a CAT scan. GIBBS That will have to wait, Doc. I have some important questions to ask him. DUCKY Whats wrong Jethro? GIBBS Last night Pat, I had Agent David call Falls Church to JAG Headquarters. I had her ask the personal office for any information on your Bree Bryce. They faxed over an answer. There was no Bree Bryce stationed at Falls Church or in the Navy at any time. There was an Admiral James Bryce, who was head of JAG in 1996. PATRICK Jim Bryce is her husband GIBBS Are you in the habit of calling Rear Admirals by their first names? PATRICK Only when Ive known them over 40 years. What are you getting at Agent Gibbs? Do you think I have been lying to you? GIBBS I dont know what to think any more, Pat. When your finished with him Doctor, I want to see him in the conference room. Gibbs cell phone rings. He takes it out of his pocket and flips it open. He says his name and he listens for a few seconds. 37

GIBBS (CONTD) On my way, Abs. EXT. SIDEWALK AREA, KENMORE SQUARE, BOSTON. DAY The car containing McGee and DiNozzo pulls up to the curb and stops. They get out of the car and steps up to the sidewalk. In McGees hand is a manila envelope.

TIM That looks like the bookstore that Gibbs said might be the one where Pat lives. Tony looks up to see an apartment over the bookstore. TONY Their does seems to be some sort of apartment over the store. Tony and Tim start to walk towards the bookstore. From the alleyway, a young woman steps out and asks them if they have any spare change. Her name is Mary. She is of college age. TONY (CONTD) Do you always use this alleyway to ask for money? MARY Why do you want to know? Tony and Tim take out their wallets. They show her their ID cards and badges. Mary reads the IDs. MARY (CONTD) N.C.I.S. You must be Federal cops. Im not breaking any laws. TONY Didnt say you were. Tony and Tim put t their IDs away. Tony places his hand into his pocket and pulls out a $20. TONY (CONTD) 38

You can have this $20 if you can answer a few questions for us. MARY Will it get anyone in trouble? I dont want to be known as a snitch that gets people into trouble. TONY No one is in trouble. In fact you could be doing someone a great service. MARY What can I do to help? TONY Tim, show the young lady that picture we got from Abby. Tim pulls out the photo of Pat from the envelope. He hands it to Mary who takes it. She looks at and then hands it back to Tim. TONY (CONTD) Do you know him? MARY Only by his first name. His name is Patrick. He lives in one of the apartments above the bookstore. He would give us money from time to time. TONY Do you know anyone else who might know him? MARY You can ask the man and woman who run the bookstore since he lives above it. They should know his last name. TONY What is your name? MARY My name is Mary? Tony hands the $20 to Mary who takes it. TONY 39

Thank you Mary. You were very helpful. Mary puts the $20 in her jeans pocket. She looks at Tim. MARY Youre kind of cute, Agent McGee. Next time youre in Boston I can show you around. Mary walks away back to the alleyway. Tony and Tim watch her go. There are several others with her. Tony and Time move towards the bookstore. TONY That Mary was sweet on you, Probe. You should take her up on her offer. TIM When I was at M.I.T., I came downtown more times than I can count. Tony and Tim walk up the steps leading up to the bookstore. INT. BOOKSTORE. DAY The bookstore is like most used stores. The shelves are crammed with books, both new and used. Against the walls are more books piled high. In one corner shelf there are old magazines and other reading material. There are a few customers in store milling about. At the front counter, Tony and Tim see a man and woman. They are in their late 50s to early 60s. Tony and Tim walk up to the two. The woman is EMMA WINSETT, 60, and the man is her husband GEOFFREY WINSETT,62. EMMA May I help you? Tony and Tim take out their IDs and show them to Emma and Geoffrey. TONY I am Agent DiNozzo My partner Agent McGee. N.C.I.S. EMMA (English Accent) I am Emma Winslett and this is my husband Geoff. What can we do for the Naval Criminal Investigation Service? 40

TONY You have heard of us? EMMA To many times. Tim pulls out the picture of Pat and hands it to Emma TIM I understand you may know this person? EMMA Yes. His name is Patrick Hunter. He lives upstairs in one of the apartments. Has something happened to Pat? TIM Have you known him for long? EMMA Ive known Pat for nearly 40 years. My husband has known him for the last 15 years. We took over the bookstore in 1996, when my father died. Can you tell me what has happened to Pat? TIM He was injured in an altercation with two Marines in Arlington, VA. It happened two days ago. EMMA (Alarmed) Is Patrick all right? TONY Except for some memory loss, he is fine. He has suffered a concussion. That is why we are here, to fill in the missing pieces. Is there a chance we could take a look at his apartment? GEOFFREY Is there any reason why you need to see his apartment? TONY It would help to clear up some of the mystery surrounding this investigation. 41

EMMA Ill let you in the apartment. But I insist on coming in with you. TONY I wouldnt have it any other way. Emma Winslett takes a key from a hook on the wall beside her. She comes from behind the counter and walks to the backstairs, which leads to the apartments. EMMA Come this way gentleman. Tim and Tony follow Emma. They go up the stairs. Once they are out of sight, Geoffrey picks up the phone. INT. UPSTAIRS. BOOKSTORE. The three are outside Pats apartment. Emma uses the key to unlock the apartment. She opens the door and the three walks in. INT. INSIDE APARTMENT. Tony, Tim and Emma walk to the middle of the living room. There are two open doors. One door leads to the master bedroom and the other is in the back of the apartment. There are two closed doors, next to the master bedroom. Tony walks over one of the closed. Emma follows him. TONY Why are these doors closed? EMMA The first door leads to Stevens bedroom. That door has been closed for 20 years. Patrick will not allow anyone to disturb whats inside there. TONY Would you please open the door, Mrs. Winslett? Nothing will be disturbed. I promise you. Emma hesitates for a second. Then she unlocks the door and opens it. Tony is amazed at what he sees. 42

The room is a typical teenagers room. There are posters and pictures on the walls. The dresser top has some small picture frames and books on it. Tony looks at the bed. It is made up military style. On the pillow is an officers dress cover with the visor high polished, but with a sprinkled of dust. On the bed itself is laid out with a full dress Marine uniform and the Medal of Honor. TONY (CONTD) Thats the Medal of Honor

EMMA Yes. It was awarded to Steven for bravery. He saved a lot of lives after a missile hit the barrack in Saudi Arabia. Steven died saving those lives. TONY From the look of this room, Pat expect Steven to come home to this room and put the uniform on EMMA There are 2 Medal of Honors in this room, Agent DiNozzo. TONY You can call me Tony. EMMA I would prefer not to. TONY As you wish, Mrs. Winslett. EMMA As I was saying, there are two medals in this room. The second is on the wall on the other side of the door. That medal was awarded to Stevens father, who was killed in Viet Nam. TONY I think we have intruded long enough, Mrs. Winslett. Thank you for letting me look. Tony closes the door to the room. He looks around, but does not see Tim. He looks in the back room. He sees Tim sitting at a desk looking through a stack of papers. 43

TONY (CONTD) Where is Mrs. Hunter? Wouldnt she be worried that Pat hadnt contacted her in the last couple of days? EMMA Patricks wife Melinda died in Feb. 2002. Emma and Tim walk to the back room. Coming inside, Tony can clearly see that it is an office. On the walls are more pictures in frames as well as smaller pictures in frames on the desk. Emma stays by the door. Tony comes over to the desk TONY What do you have there, Probe? TIM It seems that Mr. Hunter is writing a book. It starts when he meets his future wife and he has gotten as far as Feb. 2002 when she died. He has written anything after that period. TONY You got all that in the few minutes you have been in here? TIM I scanned the first few pages and the last few pages. From what I read it is very well written. In the middle of the desk, Tony sees a picture in a small 4 by 6 inch frame. It is of two women, one around fifty with red hair and blue eyes. The other is younger, about 16 or 17. She also has red hair and blue eyes. P.O.V. Tony, mother and daughter. TONY Mrs. Winslett, is this Mrs. Hunter? EMMA Yes. The other is their daughter, Melissa. She was 17 when this picture was taken, just before Melinda went into the hospital. Tony looks up to see pictures on the fall wall. He walks over to it. It is a picture of three young men. The one in the middle is wearing a Marine uniform. It is the other

44

two on either side of Steven that caught his eye. One has blonde hair, about Stevens age. The other has brown hair and looks a few years older. TONY Tim. Look at this picture Tim, still sitting at the desk, looks up to see what Tony is looking at. TIM What about it? TONY I can see that the one in the Marine uniform must be Steven, but the other two. Surly it cant be... A voice, female with a Tennessee accent speaks. It is a soft voice, but has great authority. A voice that used to be heard and obeyed. This is Bree Williams, 68. BREE (O.S.) If you were wondering if they are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck you would be right. Tony and Tim look towards the voice. They see Bree. Though she in her middle 60s, she looks like she is in her 50s. She has deep red hair. BREE (CONTD) I would like to know who you are and why you seem its necessary to invade Mr. Hunters privacy? TONY I am Agent Tony DiNozzo and my partner Agent Tim McGee, N.C.I.S. BREE You do have warrant to search this apartment, I hope? TONY We are searching for an identity rather than for anything incriminating. Two days ago, Pat, as we only knew him by, was involved in an altercation with two Marines and he was hit over the head with a beer bottle. BREE You have these two Marines under arrest? TONY 45

They are not the cause of his injuries. They were already unconscious on the ground. BREE Then it is Pat, who is under arrest. On what chargers? TONY As far as I know, when we left headquarters, he was only being questioned. We are mostly looking for a next of kin, since he seems to have a memory loss caused by the blow. BREE Is he receiving medical treatment? TONY Yes maam, by our doctor at headquarters. BREE What is this doctors name? TONY Dr. Donald Mallard. BREE I have heard the name. Dr. Mallard is an autopsy surgeon. TONY He has a medical license. BREE He has to by law to be an M.E. Who is your supervision? TONY His name is Leroy Jethro Gibbs BREE Get him on the phone. I want to speak to him. TONY Yes maam INT. ABBYS LAB. DAY Gibbs comes into the lab. He comes up to Abby. 46

GIBBS What have you got for me, Abs? ABBY No Caf Pow GIBBS You said it was urgent. So I came right away. Abby goes up to her computers. There are three screens with one picture on screen one and three and two pictures on screen two. Abby goes to screen one. It is a picture of a young man in a Marine uniform. ABBY I have a match of the picture that was on the burnt ID card. Meet second Lt. Steven David Pierce. GIBBS So Pats last name is Pierce. ABBY (Walking to screen two) You would think so. We come to the next picture. Gibbs looks at the pictures on screen two. The first picture shows a man on his knees at the side of a grave his left arm around the cross section. Behind him are two women. On the left is a woman wearing a Navy dress uniform. On the right is another young women. Both have a hand on each of the mans shoulder. Standing to the side of the man is a young girl, her back to the camera. GIBBS Can you bring up the name on the cross? ABBY Already have. All you can get was Captain David Allen. His arm covered the last name. GIBBS Zoom in on the shoulder of the woman in the Navy uniform. Abby does so. A close up shows a silver eagle on the shoulder. GIBBS (CONTD) Shes a Captain. A very young Captain. 47

ABBY Youll like both of them, Gibbs. Theyre redheads as is the little girl. Gibbs looks at the third picture. It is the same as the second picture except the little girl is standing in front of the man. He is holding her close. GIBBS You can see the last name on the cross in this picture. Abby zooms in on the cross section of the nameplate. It reads Pierce. ABBY There is a caption with the photos. Ziva comes into the lab. She walks up to Gibbs and sees the pictures. In her hand is a sheet of paper. Abby scrolls down on the computer. ABBY (CONTD) It reads Patrick Hunter, stepfather of slain second Lt. Steven Pierce kneels down before the grave of Captain David Pierce U.S.M.C. With Mr. Hunter, from left to right, are Captain Bree Williams, U.S.N. and Mr. Hunter wife, Melinda, who was once married to Captain Pierce and mother of second Lt. Pierce and daughter Melissa. ZIVA Gibbs, I found this fax in the machine. (Hands fax to Gibbs) It must have come in last night after I left. Its from a Captain Bud Roberts, over at Falls Church. GIBBS I know Captain Roberts. ZIVA He states he was in the personal office last night when I made the request on any information on Bree Bryce. He remembers a lawyer at JAG named Bree Williams who was married to another lawyer named James Bryce Sorry I didnt get this sooner. It might have saved Pat a lot of trouble.

48

ABBY Gibbs, there is one last picture. Abby clicks a button on the computer. Another picture comes on the screen. It shows Pat standing in front of an older man with his back to the camera. Melinda stands beside Pat. There is a medal around Pats neck. In the background behind Pat, over each shoulder is a male and female. GIBBS The person standing with his back to the camera, giving the medal to Pat must be the older Bush. Abby can you zoom in on the two Naval officers over Pats shoulders. Abby does so. Gibbs can see it is the same woman in uniform from picture two. GIBBS (CONTD) Captain Williams again. I am willing to bet that the man beside her is Admiral Bryce. Abby, have a copy of these pictures made up. Its about time Pat was reintroduced to his past. ABBY Will do Gibbs. GIBBS Did the photo of second Lt. Pierce come with a serial number? ABBY Yes it did. GIBBS Give a copy of the photo of Lt. Pierce to Ziva with the serial number. (To Ziva) Print out a copy of young Pierces citation. I want to know exactly why he was awarded that medal. ZIVA Will do Gibbs Ziva receives the picture print out from Abby. Ziva leaves the lab. Gibbs phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket. He sees that the caller is Tony. Camera on the speaker. GIBBS What have you got for me DiNozzo? 49

TONY McGee and I found the apartment. The owner, who is daughter of the original owner, let us inside. We found out that Pats last name is.. GIBBS Hunter. I know and that Steven Pierce is his stepfather. TONY If you already knew this, why sent us on a wild goose chase? GIBBS Its what you do best DiNozzo. Thats why your an excellent investigator. TONY There is someone here who wants to speak with. She claims to be Pats lawyer. GIBBS 60s, red hair, very beautiful? Yes. TONY

GIBBS Put her on. Tony hands the phone to Bree, who takes it. BREE Agent Gibbs GIBBS Captain Bree Williams, I presume? BREE Actually, I retired Rear Admiral. Why do you have agents invading my clients private quarters? And without a search warrant. GIBBS

50

If Im not mistaken, Admiral Williams, the apartment is part of the bookstore and is owned by the children of the original owner and they gave permission for my agents to look around. BREE Well, I had to get the niceties out of the way, Agent Gibbs. How is Patrick? GIBBS Hurting. He cant remember much of his past because of a blow to his head. We found some information on him from our computers only a few minutes ago. I was about to give him the good news. BREE I am coming down to Washington. I want to see Patrick for myself. GIBBS Ill have DiNozzo and McGee drive you down. BREE Well be taking my cooperate jet. We be on there in the next few hours. GIBBS Very well Admiral. VINCE I was just pulling up to the office when Ben told me you were on the phone. He said it has to do with Uncle Pat. BREE I need you and Melissa to go to N.C.I.S. Headquarters at the Navy Yard. It seems that Pat was injured in an altercation with two of your Marines. VINCE I know about the altercation. I received a report about it this morning. BREE And you have nothing about it? VINCE The report only mentioned a civilian, but not by name. Now that I know who it is, I know what must be done. BREE First, I need you to stop at the Arlington Inn. Its were Pat was staying and pick up his suitcases. He owes for

56

three days. Will you have enough to settle his bill? Ill reimburse you when I get down there. VINCE When will you arrive? BREE Ill be coming down in the jet. I should be there in the next few hours. The agent in charge is named Gibbs. Hell have a car at the airport to pick us up. Ill be traveling with two of his agents. VINCE Will do, Mother. Thank you for calling. Melissa and I will meet you at N.C.I.S. Vince replaces the receiver on the hook. He looks up to see Cordell standing by the office door. BEN Is everything all right, Vince? VINCE I am going to have to travel to Arlington. Melissa will be going with me. It concerns her father. Do you think Jennifer can watch the boys? She might have to spend the night. BEN I cant see any reason why not. Ill have her over at your quarters right away. VINCE Thank you Ben. Youll have to over see training for the next couple of days. BEN Will do, Vince. VINCE By the way, are those two Marines still in sick bay? BEN

57

Yes. They should be released by tomorrow to be put on light duty for the next few days.

VINCE Restrict them to barrack until I get back and then have them report to me. BEN Aye sir. Vince leaves the office. EXT. OFFICE BUILDING. PARKING LOT. DAY. Vince goes over to the Mazda 3. He gets in and starts up the car and pulls out of the parking lot. INT. OFFICE BUILDING. DAY. Cordell goes over to the desk and picks up the phone. He makes a call. EXT. KENMORE SQUARE. OUTSIDE THE BOOKSTORE. DAY Tony, Tim, and Bree are outside. In front of Tony and Tims car is a pure white 64 1/2 Mustang Fastback. Tony looks at the car and smiles. TONY Thats a 64 1/2 Mustang Fastback. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor. BREE You know your cars, Agent DiNozzo. Yes it is a 64 1/2. I brought it brand new and have had it ever since. Tony goes to the front of the car. He sees the license plate. The plate reads Hon-BonGrl. Tony mouths the words to himself. He looks up at Bree with a puzzled look on his face. BREE (CONTD) If youre a good boy Agent DiNozzo, Ill tell you the story about that plate on the way to Washington. TONY 58

I can hardly wait. BREE If the two of you will follow in your car to the hanger we will be on our way. Tony places his hand inside his pants pocket and pulls out the car keys. He tosses them to Tim, who catches them. TONY You drive our car Probe. Ill ride with Admiral Williams. TIM Will do. BREE Shall we be going Agent DiNozzo? EXT. HOUSING AREA QUANTICO. MAJOR BRYCES QUARTERS. DAY. The Mazda 3, with Bryce behind the wheel, pulls into the driveway in back of a red Ford. He turns the engine off and gets out of the car. Vince walks up to the house and goes inside. He sees his wife, Melissa Hunter Bryce, 27, sitting on the living room couch with a young raven girl. This is JENNIFER CORDELL, 16. Melissa looks up to see Vince coming into the living room. Melissa gets up and comes over to Vince. She gives him a hug and kiss. MELISSA Jennifer came over and said her father had asked her to baby sits the boys. VINCE Ill tell you in a minute. (Looks at Jennifer) Thank you for coming, Jennifer, to sit on short notice. Did your father tell you the reason why we need you tonight? JENNIFER Yes sir, he did. VINCE Could you give Mrs. Bryce and myself the room for a minute while I explain everything? JENNIFER Yes sir.

59

MELISSA There is a Diet Pepsi in the fridge for you. JENNIFER Thank you, Mrs. Bryce. Jennifer leaves the living room area and goes into the kitchen. Melissa watches her go. MELISSA Whats happening, Vince? VINCE I got a call from Mother, a half hour ago. She says that Uncle Pat had come to Arlington two days ago and didnt tell anyone he was coming. MELISSA Two days ago, the 25th. He came to visit Stevens grave. I had gone earlier in the day, but I didnt see him. Why didnt he call us?

VINCE I dont know. According to Mother and I report I received from the Master at Arms office this morning, your father got into an altercation with two of my Marines. MELISSA Is he all right? VINCE He only suffered a blow to the head, but the two Marines ended up in the hospital. Anyway he is at N.C.I.S. Headquarters at the Navy Yard. Mother wants us to go there for support. She is coming down from Boston. MELISSA Give me a few minutes to change. VINCE Go ahead. I have to change uniforms.

60

Before Melissa and Vince go up the stairs, James Bryce, one of the twin boys comes into the living room. JAMES Are you really going to see Grandpa Pat, Mother? MELISSA Yes. JAMES May Steve and I come with you? MELISSA Not this time sweetheart. Something has happened to him and we have to pick him up. Perhaps youll see him tomorrow. Meanwhile, Jenny will be here to watch over you and your brother. JAMES O.K. At least she likes to play video games. Melissa gives James a kiss on the forehead and tells him that Jennifer is in the kitchen and sent him on his way. INT. THE HOUSE. 15 MINUTES LATER. EARLY EVENING. Vince and Melissa come back downstairs. Melissa has changed into a red dress and Vince into an olive green dress uniform. They come into living room and they see Jennifer and the boys sitting on the couch watching T.V. They come over to them MELISSA Jenny, you have both our cell phone numbers in case of emergency. JENNIFER Yes maam, Mrs. Bryce. MELISSA Nine oclock bedtime, boys. You still have school tomorrow. Make sure youre homework is finished. BOTH BOYS Already done.

61

Melissa gives each of the boys a kiss on the forehead. MELISSA (To Jennifer) Dont let the boys give you any trouble. JENNIFER Yes maam. They never give any trouble. Drive safely. Say hello to Mr. Hunter for me. BOTH BOYS Tell Grandpa Pat we miss him and want to see him. I will. Melissa and Vince leave the house. INT. BULLPEN AREA. DAY (AN HOUR LATER) Gibbs comes into the bullpen area. He has the folder with the pictures from Abby in his hand. He comes up to Zivas desk. He asks if she has the citation and she hands it to him. GIBBS What about the Navy record? ZIVA Its forthcoming. Gibbs, I read the citation. Steven was very brave young man. I dont know of anyone his age that would have the guts to run into a burning building to help save lives at the risk of his own. Gibbs takes the citation from Ziva and looks at it. GIBBS When you get the personal and financial records of the Foxhole let me know. ZIVA Will do. Gibbs goes up the stairs to the conference room. He opens the door and walks in. MELISSA

62

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM. EARLY EVENING. Gibbs walks into the room. Sitting at the table is Ducky, Patrick and Bryant. Gibbs goes to the nearest chair to Pat. He places the folder on the table with the citation upside down. He looks at Ducky. GIBBS How is Pat, Ducky? DUCKY Dr. Bryant and I consider that there is no permanent damage and that he will recover and hopefully his memory as well. Dr. Bryant wants take Pat to his clinic to do a CAT scan. BRYANT That is if Agent Gibbs will allow it. If he will release Pat to me for the day. GIBBS Mr. Hunter is not under arrest. He is free to leave any time he wants to. I only kept him here because he had nowhere else to go. I needed to find out who he is and I have found what I am looking for. Gibbs picks up the folder. He pulls out the photos that Abby had given him. One by one he places them on the table in front of Pat. GIBBS (CONTD) Do you remember these photos, Pat? PATRICK Yes. The first photo is my son, Steven. The next two were taken at his burial at Arlington Cemetery in April, 1991. The last picture was at the awards ceremony where the older Bush presented me with Stevens Medal of Honor. I told him I would rather have my son than the medal. GIBBS Do you recognize the three women in photo two? PATRICK Yes. The one in uniform is Bree. The other two are my late wife, Melinda, and my daughter.

63

GIBBS And the grave you are kneeling at?

PATRICK It belongs to Stevens real father, David Pierce. I made a promise to keep both Melinda and Steven safe. I failed. Steven was killed and Melinda died ten years later. She never forgave for what happened to her son. GIBBS In photo three do you know whom the two persons in uniform behind you? PATRICK Yes. It is Bree and her husband, Jim Bryce. There is a third person behind them that you cant see. His name is Paul Hartman. GIBBS Admiral Williams. Shes very important to you? PATRICK Very much Agent Gibbs. I have loved only three women in my wife. Bree, my wife Melinda and my daughter Melissa. And in loving them I have hurt each one of them deeply. DUCKY If you dont mind me asking, Pat. In what way have you hurt them deeply? PATRICK How, Dr. Mallard, in every way possible. I accused Bree of betrayal when there wasnt any. Here is a woman who befriended a 17-year-old kid, helped him find his way after a court martial in 67. When it was over she could have walked away and never looked back. But at the risk of her own Navy career she helped me first by finding my real mother. After that she would stay in touch. She became like a sister to me. Protected me like a big sister would. Even made sure no harm ever came to me. And ten years ago I hurt her. She has long forgiven me, but I am sure it still hurt. 64

Then there is Melinda. I took her only son from her. I encouraged Steven to follow his own way. Melinda didnt want him to be a soldier, but he wanted to be like his father; a Marine. I could have told him not to join the Marines, after college, when Desert Storm happened, but I didnt step in and Melinda lost her only son that day in Saudi and I lost a stepson whom I couldnt love any more if he was my real son. And Melissa lost a brother whom she loved more than anything in this world and with Steven it was returned. He was 14, when Melissa was born. And like a big brother he protected her from harm from everyone, including me. DUCKY These were events that you could not have foreseen, Pat. As much as we like to protect those we love, we cant do it 100% of the time. We should consider ourselves lucky we can do it 10% of the time. Something will always stand in the way. GIBBS We found your apartment in Boston. Tony and Tim have met with Admiral Williams. I have spoken with her half an hour ago. She is flying down and your daughter and her husband are coming from Quantico. PATRICK Didnt anything I say get through to you? I have hurt them to much already. Maybe it is best that they live their own lives without me. DUCKY You dont really mean that, Pat? GIBBS Despise what you have done to these people they still care for you or is what you feel that they hold over you is just in your own mind. PATRICK How can you say that, Agent Gibbs? DUCKY You say that you accused Bree of betraying you, yet from what Jethro just said, she is very concerned about 65

you. That doesnt sound like a person who holds blame over you.

PATRICK That would be like Bree. She may forgive, but she can never forget that day. She will remember every detail for the rest of her life. DUCKY But you did reconcile. Who was it that helped you get back with Bree? PATRICK It was Melissa and Vince. They have known each other since they were kids. They grew up together. DUCKY Maybe Im wrong, but it sounds like a family who cares very much about your welfare. There are many who wish they could have the family you have. PATRICK I know your right, Dr. Mallard. What you must understand is that Melissa has her own life to live. She has two great sons, twins, named Steven and James and a husband who is second to none. I dont want to make the same mistakes with them like I did with Steven. DUCKY What makes you think that will happen? PATRICK Maybe it wont. But if I stay away then nothing will happen. DUCKY Im afraid your wrong, Pat. What will mostly happen if you stay away if cause more hurt feelings? Ive never met your daughter or Bree, but they sound like two extraordinary women. GIBBS Well known in a few hours when they get here.

66

Gibbs gets up from the table. He leaves conference room. Gibbs goes down the stairs to the bullpen area. He walks up to Zivas desk. She looks up. GIBBS (CONTD) Did you get the information I asked for? ZIVA Right here. It came in a few minutes ago. Ziva picks up the two folders from her desk and hands them to Gibbs. He opens each folder and looks at a few pages and then closes them. GIBBS After we are finished with Mr. Hunter, Ill need you for one last assignment. ZIVA Ill be ready. INT. AIRPLANE CABIN. DAY. Tony, Tim and Bree are sitting in their seats. TONY Is that really a true story on how you got that license plate.

BREE Every word, Agent DiNozzo. If you can find a copy of the book James Bond Diary that Roger Moore wrote, youll find me in there. TONY And you brought the Mustang in 64 after watching Goldfinger. BREE Yes. I had just graduated from Memphis State and was going to law school at Yale. I have kept it ever since. A friend on mine, who run the large Marine Agency in Washington D.C., is a car collector. He offered to buy the car since it is in pristine condition. I will never part it.

67

Bree looks over at Tim. He has been quiet the whole time. BREE (CONTD) And you, Agent McGee. Youve been quiet these last few hours. Whats on your mind? TIM Ive been thinking about those pages I read in Mr. Hunters manuscript. As an author I wouldnt want anyone to read what I havent published. Its very well written and should be published. T would like to read the whole book when its finished. If Mr. Hunter doesnt have a publisher, I could talk to mine. Im sure she would jump at the chance to publish it. BREE Thank you Agent McGee. Ive already gotten Pat a publisher in Boston. The contracts are ready to be signed. Its a matter of getting Pat to sign them. INT. BULLPEN AREA. DAY Ziva and Gibbs are sitting at their desks. The ding of the elevator and the opening of the doors are heard off camera. They both look over to see Vince and Melissa step out. They come up to Zivas desk. Vince asks for Gibbs. Ziva points to the other desk. Vince and Melissa go over to Gibbs desk. Gibbs stands up and steps to the front of the desk. VINCE Agent Gibbs, I am Major Vince Bryce. My wife Melissa. Gibbs shakes hands with Vince and Melissa. GIBBS Admiral Williams said you would be coming. VINCE I would like to see Melissas father. GIBBS I will take you both to see him as soon as your Mother arrives. This is her request. VINCE 68

Knowing Mother, it was more like an order. She does have that effect. MELISSA How is my father? GIBBS He is hurting,. He faked a memory loss in hopes that he simply forgot who he was and disappeared you would get along with your lives. MELISSA Why would he think such as a thing? GIBBS I dont know. VINCE It wouldnt have worked. Mother would have moved heaven and to find Uncle Pat, no matter were he would go. GIBBS Yes. That is an unusual relationship between your Mother and Father-in-Law. VINCE You have to understand, Agent Gibbs that for the past 45 years, since they have met, there has been a special kinship between them. My father understood and for the most part, Melissas Mother. But even with that friendship, my Mother would never betray my Father. Nor would Uncle Pat betray Melissas Mother. GIBBS Pat did mention that at one time he did accuse your Mother of betraying him, but didnt say what that betrayal was suppose to be. VINCE My Mother had kept some information she had learned about Uncle Pats past. She never meant to hurt to him. That secret was about Uncle Pats real father. GIBBS Why would she keep that secret? 69

VINCE Because the man who was Uncle Pats real father was a life long enemy who did everything in his power to destroy him and my Mother starting in 1967. GIBBS When did he find out? A female voice is heard. It is off camera, but it is Bree speaking. BREE I will as that question, Agent Gibbs. Vince, Melissa, and Gibbs look to see Bree come up to the desk. Tony and Tim follow her going to their desks. VINCE Im sorry, Mother, but Agent Gibbs asked I saw no reason why he shouldnt know, especially if it will help Uncle Pat. BREE Its all right Vince. (To Gibbs) How Pat out that his worst enemy was his Father was in 2002, when he was the D.A. For Suffolk County. He tried to have Pat convicted for the first-degree murder, when Melinda died.

MELISSA (Shocked Voice) How can you say such a thing, Aunt Bree? My Father would never hurt my Mother. He loved her very much. BREE Of course you Father loved her, Sweetheart, but to this man what your Father did, as far as he was concerned, constituted murder. MELISSA I never learned what happened that night after I left my Mothers hospital room. BREE

70

Your father stayed with your mother all night. Towards morning, when the sun started to rise, Melinda knew that this were to be her last moments. She asked your father to carry her over to the window in the room to see could see the sun rise for the last time. Your father complied. After all it was your mothers last wish. Pat went over to the door and locked it. For good measure he jammed the back of a chair under the doorknob. Then Pat proceeded to pick her up in his arms. At that time she must of weighted less than a 100 pounds and he carry her over to the window. This set off all kinds of alarms and the nurses and doctors ran to the room, but couldnt get in. It took a better part of an hour to pry off the hinges and finally gained entrance. They found then still by the window, holding Melinda in his arms. When Pat finally did allow the doctors to take Melinda, he was arrested, but not for murder, but to damages to the door. The hospital only wanted restitution for the door, but it wasnt enough for the DA. He was going to finally have his revenge for what for what Pat did to his brother-in-law in 1967, who was Pats stepfather. GIBBS The court martial Pat told us in the conference room. BREE Yes. In court I tried to have the DA removed for cause. When he refused I asked the judge for a conference in chambers with the DA present. I put forth the proof. It was a birth certificate, given to me by his real mother. I told the DA, whose name was named Alan Connors, that if he didnt step down, I would put him on the stand and expose him for who he really is. He refused to answer my questions and was forced by the judge to recuse himself from the case. From that point on the DAs office dropped the case. GIBBS And that was the betrayal Pat spoke about. Yes. BREE MELISSA 71

No wonder Father was depressed for those two years. I thought it had to do with Mother dying. Aunt Bree why did you stay away. I know that Dad didnt really blame you.

BREE I know Melissa. But this was one time it had to be your fathers decision. But when you called me that night in Oct. 2004, I knew that it was time to act, even if I had to make the first move. Yours and Vinces happiness is what mattered. And because of that move we became a family again. (To Gibbs) Now you know everything, Agent Gibbs. GIBBS Except for one thing, Admiral Williams. Who was the person that hit Pat over the head two days ago? Could it have been this Alan Connors? BREE As much as I would like to pin this on Alan Connors, I cant. He died in 2007. That day in court cost him his career as a lawyer and destroyed his marriage. He had been married to a woman from a very prominent Boston family who can trace their line to Mayflower pilgrims. The scandal was too much for them. GIBBS Why does the name Alan Connors sound so familiar? Ziva hears Gibbs and types in the name on her computer ZIVA Alan Connors filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act for any reports that N.C.I.S. Had on Patrick Hunter and Bree Williams for evident on an upcoming trial. The request was approved and signed off on. GIBBS Who approved the request? ZIVA 72

You did Gibbs, in March of 2002, but it was never sent out. It seems that Mr. Connors never sent in the final forms to have us mail the reports to him. BREE And now you now why Pat may have faked a memory lost. The Agency has invaded his life to many times. And now Agent Gibbs, we would like to see Pat. GIBBS Follow me. Gibbs takes the three up the stairs to the conference room. Tony has a look of his face of disbelief. Ziva catchs it. ZIVA Tony, you look like you have seen a spirit. TONY Ghost, Ziva, seen a ghost. If you had been in Pats office and seen the pictures on his desk youll have this look also. There was this picture of Pats wife. If you want to know what she looks, you only have to look at the daughter. They are like twins at the same age. INT. CONFERENCE ROOM. EARLY EVENING. Gibbs, Bree, Vince and Melissa enter. Those around the table look up to see them come in. Pat places his head in his hands in disbelief. Melissa goes over to Pat and places her arms around him. MELISSA Are you all right, Dad? When Vince told me what happened, I was worried about you. If you were coming to VA, why didnt you call us? We would have loved to see you. PATRICK Why did you come? BREE Do you really have to ask that question, Patrick? You know why we are here. We are family and as a family we care for each other. 73

PATRICK After all the hurt I have caused every one of you.

BREE What hurt have you caused us, Patrick? All I see are those of us who love you and care very much about what is happening to you. Melissa turns Pats chair to where he is facing her. She kneels down to where she is eye to eye with Pat. MELISSA Why dont you come and visit with us while you get better. The boys would love to see you. They keep asking when Grandpa Pat will come to visit. They miss you very much. They love it when you plat catch with them or take them to see the Nationals play. I cant. PATRICK

MELISSA Why cant you? Patrick hesitates. BREE Tell her Patrick. You told me, now tell her. Melissa has a right to know. Melissa looks up at Bree. MELISSA What did he tell you Aunt Bree? I want to know. BREE Yes, you do, Sweetheart, but Im not the one to tell you. It must come from your father. Melissa looks at Pat. MELISSA 74

What is Aunt Bree talking about, Dad? PATRICK It has to do with the last time I took the boys to the ball game. It was on the way home. A car had jumped the red light. If I had been a second slower in hitting the brakes, the boys could have been injured or worst killed. Would you have forgiven me? Your other never forgave for what happened to Steven. MELISSA Thats not true Dad. Mother forgave you a long time ago. She told me so herself. PATRICK When did she tell you? MELISSA The night I visited her in the hospital. She told me she forgave you the morning after we had come back from Maine. After we had visited with Grandma Susan. She told me that it is you who must forgive yourself. You have been blaming yourself these past 20 years, since Stevens death. PATRICK Why didnt she tell me? MELISSA She tried to in so many ways, but you wont listen to her. (Tears begin to form in Melissas eyes.) Ive lost Steven. Ive lost Mother. I dont want to lose you, Dad. I love you to much to see that happen.

VINCE Listen to her Uncle Pat. Ive known you all my life. My father, you, Uncle Paul and Uncle Michael are the finest men Ive known. All of you brought me up and because of you four is the reason I am the man today. BREE Its time to let go, Patrick. PATRICK 75

I dont want to forget them. They were so much a part of my life. GIBBS To let go doesnt mean to forget. 20 years, I was in Saudi, the same time as Steven. I never met your son, but what I have learned and heard of him, from all of you, he was the kind of officer I would have been honored to serve with him. Gibbs picks up the citation and hands it to Patrick. GIBBS (CONTD) If you need any more proof of what kind of man your son was, read the names at the bottom of this citation that approved his Medal of Honor. Pat looks at the names on the citation. Close up on citation. The signatures are as follows. President, the Commandant of the Marines, Chief of Naval Operations, Senators Kennedy and Kerry of MA, and Secretary of the Navy and Defense. GIBBS (CONTD) Your son was a hero, Pat. Always remember that. Pat places the citation back on the table. He looks up at Gibbs. GIBBS (CONTD) One last thing you should know. While I was over in Saudi, my first wife, Shannon, and my daughter, Kelly, witnessed the murder of two Marines by a drug dealer. Instead of looking the other way, they choose to testify against the dealer. They were under the protection of N.I.S. Agents in San Diego. One day, the agent was driving them to a safe house, when the SUV they were riding in was attacked. The agent was killed and the car crashed. They were killed in the crash. For a long time I blamed myself for what happened to them, because I wasnt there to protect them. But with the help of good friends and family I was able to let go of the guilt. But in letting go, doesnt mean to forget. I miss Shannon and Kelly everyday. If Kelly was alive today, she would be about Melissas age. I would like to think, after meeting your daughter, that if they had met, they would have become very good friends. 76

Pat looks up at Gibbs. He stands up and Melissa stands up with him. PATRICK Perhaps you are right Agent Gibbs. It is time to let go. Melissa gives Pat a hug. He returns it. Bree comes over to Pat and gives him a hug also. PATRICK (CONTD) Why are you always saving my life, Bree? BREE It was Melissa who saved this time. PATRICK Yes, she did. Ive been a fool all these years. BREE In all these years Ive you, you have never been a fool. Maybe lost for a while and now you have found your way back. Welcome home, Patrick. PATRICK Melissa, can you forgive me for all the hurt I have caused you? MELISSA As Aunt Bree is fond of saying, we are family. There is nothing that has been said or done that forgiven cant be sought and given. Will you come and stay with us for awhile? PATRICK For a while. BRYANT Will you come to my clinic in the next few days for that Cat scan and treatment? VINCE Hell be there, Doctor, even if I have to get a company of Marine Recon to drag him kicking and screaming, hell be at your clinic. (To Pat) As for those two Marines that assaulted you.

77

PATRICK You dont have to punish them. I just as much to blame for what happened as they are.

VINCE Perhaps. But they should have shown respect. I know just the right punishment for them. If they were to serve a six-month tour at Arlington National Cemetery on guard duty will teach them respect for the fallen. DUCKY I guess our work here is done. GIBBS Not yet Ducky. There is one piece of the puzzle still missing and I know just were to find it. INT. BULLPEN AREA. EARLY EVENING All are standing by Gibbs desk. Ziva, Tim and Tony are still at their desks. GIBBS Ziva, Tony, your with me. We have one more job to do and then this case is closed. ZIVA The Foxhole GIBBS Yes, alert Arlington Police. Explain the situation and ask them to meet us there. Ziva picks up her phone and makes the call. She ad-libs some words on the phone and then places the receiver back on the hook. ZIVA Arlington Police will meet us at the bar. Detectives Martin and Briggs will be our contacts. GIBBS Very well. (To Tim) McGee, will you escort our visitors to their cars and drive Admiral Williams to the airport.

78

BREE No need, Agent Gibbs. I think Ill spent a couple of days here and visit myself. Vince, do you think the boys would love a ride in the jet? VINCE You know they will. Gibbs looks at Bree. GIBBS It has been an honor meeting you, Admiral Williams. If I ever need a lawyer, I hope I find one half as good as you. BREE Agent Gibbs, if you ever need a lawyer, you call me. Ill be glad to help. Gibbs and Bree shake hands. Gibbs shakes hands with Vince and Pat. Melissa comes over to Gibbs and gives him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She whispers in his ear. MELISSA Thank you, Agent Gibbs, for giving me back my father. GIBBS (Kisses Melissa on the forehead.) You welcome. I was glad to help. Gibbs, Ziva and Tony head for the elevator and when the doors open, they go in. TIM I owe you an apology, Mr. Hunter. I read some of your book when Tony and I were in your apartment. As a writer myself, I hate it when someone looks at what I have written before its published. It is my hope that youll have your book published. It is a very moving story. I would buy a copy and be honored if you will sign it. PATRICK I am going to try Agent McGee. MELISSA Your book about Steven, Dad, that would be great.

79

PATRICK Its not just about Steven, but all of us. Its time that everyone knew about him.

MELISSA Dad, there is something I need to tell you Not even Aunt Bree knows this, only Vince. I wanted to come to Boston, with the boys, when they are on spring break, and tell you both. I am going to have another baby. This time I am going to have a girl. I want to name her after Mother and Aunt Bree, if it is all right. BREE What a great way to honor your mother. PATRICK Yes, I agree. Lets go home Melissa. I have a lot to make up to all of you. EXT. OUTSIDE THE FOXHOLE, NIGHT. Gibbs, Tony and Ziva pull up to the parking lot for the Foxhole. Gibbs pulls up to a space beside a Ford Taurus with two men inside. Gibbs turns the engine off and they get out of the car. The two men in the other car get out. They come up to the three. GIBBS Detective Martin? MARTIN I am Martin. This is my partner Joe Briggs. GIBBS This is Agents DiNozzo and David. Shall we close this case, Detective? They walk to the Foxhole and go in. INT. INSIDE THE FOXHOLE. NIGHT. The five walk up to the bar at the far end from the door. The bartender/owner is speaking with a couple of female customers. He looks up to see them come in. BARTENDER

80

Excuse me ladies. I have some customers to attend with. (He walks over to the five) So, little lady, you came back for that dink and brought some friends with you. ZIVA I am not your little lady, Mr. Pippin. These gentlemen have a great many questions to ask you. PIPPIN Pippin? Whos that? My name is Mason. GIBBS Thats what you may call yourself today.. 45 years ago, when you were dishonorably discharged from the Navy, it was Fred Pippin. ZIVA You shouldnt have handled the glass in front of me the other night. That was your down fall. GIBBS Now Mr. Pippin or Mason. Do you want to revise the statement you made to the police about the attack outside your bar? PIPPIN Why should I, I told them the truth about everything that happened that night. GIBBS All except who hit Mr. Hunter with a beer bottle. It was you who hit him? PIPPIN Why would I want to hit this Hunter with a beer bottle? GIBBS We checked into your financial records on the bar. A week ago, you owed over $25,000 dollars and was behind on your payments to the bank. They were ready to foreclose, but the day after the attack, you walked in with all the money you owed and paid off you debt completely. Where did you get the money, Mr. Pippin? From the money and cards in Pat Hunters wallet? MARTIN

81

Where is the wallet, Mr. Pippin? WE can get a search warrant. It will only take an hour and well tear the place apart looking for it. PIPPIN Its behind the bar, next to the register. I didnt have time to get rid of it. Gibbs nod to Tony. Tony goes behind the bar and checks around the cash register. He finds the wallet He opens it and see Pats drivers license. TONY Have it boss. MARTIN Agent DiNozzo, Do you see a liquor license for the bar? TONY Right here in a small picture frame. MARTIN Bring it with you On it. TONY

Tony picks up the picture frame with the license in it. He comes from behind the bar and comes back over to Gibbs. He hands the wallet to Gibbs and the license to Martin. Gibbs opens the wallet and he see the drivers license and credit cards. Gibbs takes out his NCIS ID wallet and badge and opens it. He holds it up for the room to see. GIBBS NCIS. All military personal are to vacate this business. This bar is now off limits until further notice. All others are in instructed to leave as well. Several men and women take a last shallow of their beers and then stand up and begin to leave. A blonde and her date walk by Gibbs. BLONDE What right does he have to order us to leave? DATE (MALE) Hes NCIS Honey. He can do whatever he likes.

The bar is cleared. Martin goes over to the bars door and locks it. He pulls down the shades and comes back over to the group. GIBBS We found out who you really are, Mr. Pippin and that you were dishonorably discharged from the Navy in 1967, for assault on a minor as well as making false statements to NIS and JAG investigators. And then you made the mistake of perjuring yourself at the court martial of Chief Fredricks. It must of rankle you, when Pat Hunter walked in here and didnt even recognize or even remember you. But you remembered him even after 45 years. Isnt that true, Mr. Pippin? PIPPIN That S.O.B caused the death of my best friend, whom Ive known since grade school, and he destroyed the career of one of the finest chiefs Ive worked with. GIBBS Your best friend, Petty Officer Richard Welch killed a Marine guard trying to escape and finding himself trapped turned the gun on himself. The only one responsible for his death is he. MARTIN Mr. Pippin, it is against state law for ex cons to process a liquor license. (To Gibbs) Agent Gibbs, what federal charges do you have against Mr. Pippin? GIBBS None. Patrick Hunter was never military, so hes all yours Detective Martin. MARTIN Fredrick Pippin, I must inform you that you are under arrest. The charges are assault with a deadly weapon, grand thief, identify thief, illegal procession of a liquor license. Im sure the DA can come up with more. Martin places the handcuffs on Pippin. As he does he gives Pippin his Miranda Rights. When he is done he is ready to lead Pippin away. GIBBS

I could recommend a good lawyer, Mr. Pippin, but I have a feeling that Bree Williams would rather be on the prosecuting side of the case. Pippin gives Gibbs a dirty look and then is led out of the bar. EXT. MEMORIAL DAY, 2011, ARLINGTON CEMETERY. DAY.

It is early morning. There are several persons that surround the graves of Steve and David Pierce. There were two seven-man honor squads at the graves. Among the guests are Bree Williams, wearing a Navy dress uniform with the rank of Read Admiral, Vince Bryce in Marine dress blues as well as Gibbs and the two Marines who had the fight with Pat. Last there is Melissa with her two sons. They are standing by the grave of David Pierce. JAMES Mom, the man in this grave has the same last name as Uncle Steven. MELISSA Thats because the man here is Uncle Stevens real Father. You see, Grandpa Pat is Uncle Stevens stepfather. We came here today to honor both Uncle Steven and his father. Like your father, Uncle Steven and his father was awarded the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award this country can give its soldiers for bravery. Bree and Vince come up to each other. Bree salutes Vince first and Vince returns it. BREE Good morning, Major Bryce. VINCE Good morning, Admiral Williams Their hands come back down to their sides VINCE (CONTD) I am glad you are here, Mother. BREE I would not miss this, Vince. You know that. VINCE 84

Yes, I do, but still I am glad you are here for Uncle Pat. The Navy Chaplain comes up to the graves and stands between them. CHAPLIN We are gathered here today, as the other families in this place of fallen heroes to honor them for their service. Today, at this site of these two men, father and son, who were awarded the Medal of Honor, are the families of these two men, who have come to honor them. The stepfather of Steven David Pierce has asked that he say a few words. Would Patrick Hunter come up here? Pat steps out from the crowd. He had been standing between Bree and Melissa. He walks up to Stevens grave. He stands in front of the cross. He brings two fingers to his lips and then presses the fingers to the nameplate on the cross. He, then, steps behind the cross. He shakes hands with the Chaplin. He faces the crowd. PATRICK I would like to thank Captain Watts for allowing me to speak at this solemn occasion. As we look around here, we see the families of those fallen. The son and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, who gave their lives for this country. They did so willingly and Steve and David were no exceptions 27 years ago, when I met Stevens mother, I also met this extraordinary young man, a man whom I grew to love as much as if he was my own son. It was 20 years ago, on that lonely night in February, while he was in Saudi Arabia, that I lost him. It was the night the rocket hit the barrack. Steven had been walking by when the incident occur. Without a thought for his own safety, he went in to recuse his fellow servicemen because they were hurt and in trouble. He managed to save nine soldiers before the roof collapsed and he was trapped inside. For his heroic action he was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1975, during the attack on the American Embassy in Vietnam War, that was being evacuated, Captain David Pierce had manned a machine gun position to keep the enemy at bay while his fellow Americans and embassy civilians were being helicoptered to safety. He was successful. They were able to escape. But his position was soon overrun and he would lose his life. I can say this for certain that his last thoughts were of his wife

and son. For this heroic action, he too, was awarded the Medal of Honor. It is fitting that these two heroes, father and son lay side by side, in this place of heroes from the Civil War to the present. Pat steps to the front of the cross. He takes out the burnt ID card. He bends down and places the card at the base of the cross picture side up. He stands up. PATRICK (CONTD) Steven, they say I must let go and I am doing so, but in letting ago I shall never forget you. You live in my heart and soul to my dying days. You are with your mother and father and hopefully your Uncles Michael, Paul, and Jim is with you. And on that day, when I will no longer walk this planet, youll allow me to join all of you and once again we can be together again. Tell your mother that I love her and miss her and give her a hug and kiss for me. Pat, again, brings his two fingers to his lips and presses them against the name plate. He walks back to stand between Bree and Melissa. FIRST HONOR SQUAD OFFICER Squad left face. (They do so). Ready, aim, fire. (He repeats this two times) At ease. The 2nd Honor Squad Officer repeats the process of the first. When the honor squads are finished, a bugler stands between the squads. He brings the bugle to his lips and plays taps. Those in uniform salute. The bugler finishes. All hands come down. The Honor Squads come to attention, face right and march away. The service is over. Pat takes Brees arm and Vince, Melissa's arm. They walk over to Gibbs, who is in uniform. Gibbs salutes Bree and Vince and they return same. PATRICK Thank you for coming today, Agent Gibbs. GIBBS Thank you for inviting me, Pat, and please call me Jethro.

86

PATRICK I will. Youre a good man Jethro Gibbs. I wish I have known you earlier in my life. GIBBS Are you going back to Boston? PATRICK Yes. I have a book to finish and to be published and then a long vacation. I will be coming down this way from time to time to visit Melissa, Vince and the boys. GIBBS Stop by NCIS any time. Youll be welcome. PATRICK I will. Give my best to the team when you see them. Tell Tim I will honor his request. Gibbs and Pat shake hands. Gibbs does the same with Vince and Bree. They salute each other. The group leaves Gibbs side and walk over to two Marines. They are the same ones who had the fight with Pat. They come to attention and salute. VINCE Uncle Pat, I believe these two gentlemen would like a word with you. BATEMEN Mr. Hunter, I wish to apologize for my actions of last February. Though I didnt know it was the anniversary of your sons death there is no excuse for what I did and said. PATRICK Accepted COLLINS I, also, wish to apologize for my words and actions last February. PATRICK Accepted.

87

Pat shakes hands with Batemen and Collins PATRICK (CONTD) If you really want to make those apologizes count do me this one favor. BOTH Anything, sir. PATRICK Do this one thing in the name of these two brave men lying here. Be the best Marines you possibly can. Make them, this country and the Marines proud. Do this and the apology will be worth accepting. BOTH We will sir. VINCE You two report back to Quantico on Wednesday to finish your training. Ill have orders cut for both of you from the duty here. Aye sir BOTH

VINCE Dismissed. Batemen and Collins come to attention and salute. They did an about face and walked away. INT. NCIS HEADQUARTERS PRESENT DAY The present comes back to Gibbs. He takes out the sheet of paper and reads it. PATRICK (V.O.) Dear Jethro, As you can see from the enclosed boxes I have sent to each of you, is an advance copy of the book. It is due on the shelves on February 25th, the 22nd anniversary of Stevens death. I had these copies send in advance so youll receive them on that date. Though it is slow going, I am getting better each day with the help of Bree, Melissa, Vince and the boys.
