What happened in 2008?

There are always lots of things on the agenda at SSE – 2008 was no exception. Please find below
some highlights:

Education and student

• Decision to start a new Bachelor’s program with specialization towards retail management –
at Campus Roslagen in Norrtälje, which was launched in August 2008
• SSE PhD was concentrated into three main programs: SSE PhD in Business Administration,
SSE PhD in Economics and SSE PhD in Finance
• A new joint PhD course program – SUBS (Stockholm Uppsala Business Studies) – was
launched together with Uppsala within the field of Business Administration. The total
number of PhD students amounted to some 170 students in the three programs
• CEMS Annual Event & CEMS 20th Anniversary, Paris
• SSE hosted annual PIM meeting with over 150 international guests
• Open house – applicants for the Bachelor program
• Open House for SSE MSc in General Management
• SSE takes part in exhibition in Piteå
• SSE takes part in Master’s Fair at SSE Riga and Louvain
• SSE participates in Master’s Fair at Erasmus in Rotterdam
• SSE participates in master’s fair at NHH, Bergen
• SSE participates in Student Recruitment Fair for law students at SU and at Lund Uni (SSE
MSc GM)
• Student exhibition in Gothenburg
• SSE participates in Student Recruitment Fair at KTH (SSE MSC GM)
• Student exhibition in Stockholm

Research

• The Board of the Institute of Economic Historical Research appointed Professor Richard
Friberg as acting holder of the Jacob Wallenberg Professorship in Economics with special
emphasis on the Swedish business environment and political economy.
• Professor Tore Ellingsen was awarded the first Assar Lindbeck Prize for young researchers.
The Prize Ceremony took place June 10 at the Stockholm School of Economics.
• Juanna Joensen was awarded two prizes for her outstanding PhD dissertation Determinants
and Consequences of Human Capital Investments. One prize is from the Aarhus University
Research Fund (50,000 DKK), and the other is from Jyske Bank's Public Interest Fund
(25,000 DKK).
• IIB was integrated in the Center Structure of SSE
• A new Department was formed, consisting of the units Law, Modern Languages and the
department for Economic Statistics
• Many research articles were published in referred journals. A few examples:
o Blomberg, J. (2008) Gendering Finance - Masculinities and Hierarchies at the
Stockholm Stock Exchange. Organization. Accepted to be published spring 2008

o Tore Ellingsen had a paper in the American Economic Review (“Commitment and
Conflict in Bilateral Bargaining”), another paper in the American Economic Review
with Magnus Johannesson (“Pride and Prejudice: The Human Side of Incentive
Theory”), Magnus Johannesson had second paper in the Journal of the European
Economic Association (“Crowding out in Blood Donation: Was Titmuss right?”)
and a third paper in the Quarterly Journal of Economics (“Genetic variation in
preferences for giving and risk-taking”), Lars Ljungqvist had a paper in
Econometrica (“Two Questions about European Unemployment”) and Jörgen
Weibull has a publication in the American Economic Review (“Language, meaning
and games – a model of communication, coordination and evolution”).
o "Widening and Deepening: Reforming the European Union", American Economic
Review 98(2): 133-137, Papers and Proceedings, (2008), by Mike Burkart co-
authored with Erik Berglöf, Guido Friebel and Elena Paltseva.
o "One Share - One Vote: The Theory", Review of Finance, 12(1):1-49 (2008), by
Mike Burkart and Samuel Lee.
• Some 27 dissertations were put forth at SSE within Business Administration, Economics

• EFI book of the year, dedicated to the research award winners, Göran Tidström and Per
Bergman, was published by EFI and edited by the Accounting department at SSE
• Micael Dahlén was appointed the 10th highest ranked researcher in the world within
marketing
• SSE:s Centre for Consumer Marketing was ranked by Journal of advertising as number one
in Europe in advertising research
• Nordiska Detaljhandelshögskolan (NDH) arranged a research conference regarding the retail
industry

Business and Alumni

• SSE was awarded very generous donations from Torsten och Ragnar Söderbergs Stiftelser
amounting to 100 MSEK, from The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation amounting to
180 MSEK and from Erling-Persson Family Foundation amounting to 30 MSEK
• AlumniNet upgraded its profile and started up a newsletter to network with our alumni
• Two issues of SSE Today – the alumni newspaper which is distributed to almost 10 000
alumni – were published
• CDR arranged SSE on Tour events in London and New York – brand building, networking
and fundraising events
• The 2008 Corporate Partners Annual Meeting was arranged
• SSE Executive MBA was top ranked – no. 1 in the Nordic Region and No. 14 in Europe
• SSE Alumni Association arranged a large number of networking events throughout the year
– e.g. back to school lectures
Distinctions

• SSE confirmed its status in the Financial Times ranking as it came in


o first place among the Nordic countries and twelfth internationally in the Masters in
Management ranking
o first among all participating business schools in the category Best in Finance
o first among the Nordic Schools and 14th internationally in the Executive MBGA
ranking
• Robin Teigland was awarded the 2008 Corporate Partners Research Award
• The Student Association at the Stockholm School of Economics won SM in Business
Administration 2008!
• The Student Association at the Stockholm School of Economics won the price “Best
Student Project 2008” with ”Pimp my Grades”
• Emad Zand, Luisa Orre, Maria Lunden and Jakob Eliasson won the Virtus European Case
Competition – the first European Business Case Competition
• Rebecca Lucander, Johan Radojewski and Marcus Waering won Scandinavian L’Oréal
Brandstorm Final
• Fredrik Ekman, Roberto Hoyos & Niklas Olsson classified for the final in the Adidas
Guerrilla Marketing Challenge
• Kristian Kull was appointed chairman of SSCO
• Gustav Borgefalk was appointed Student of the Year 2008
• The Student Association at the Stockholm School of Economics male football team won a
silver medal in student SM
• Tobias Hildebrandt and Alexander Milles won bronze in Tennis-EM
• Göran Tidström and Per Bergman were awarded EFI Research Award 2008

Other
• In June the yearly Strategy Day at SSE was arranged
• Decision to enlarge SSE main building with a new wing – facilitated by a generous donation
by The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation – and the construction work was started in
November
• Four editions of Forskning i Fickformat, a scientific book series published by EFI at SSE
together with Öhrlings PricewaterhouseCoopers, were published
• The Student Association at the Stockholm School of Economics has, together with the
school, refurbished the Rotunda – grand opening January 30
• Project China 2009 – the largest international student project in Sweden achieved vast media
attention through the Olympics and was among others interviewed by CNN and had a blog
at svd.se during the entire project
• The 2008 Nobel Laureate in Economics Professor Paul Krugman of Princeton University
visited the SSE in December and held a lecture on the financial crisis. Professor Paul
Segerstrom lead the discussion with Professor Krugman about trade policy and the ongoing
financial crisis
• The Student Association of the Stockholm School of Economics arranged a number of
student events
• The 17th Image Barometer of SSE students interest for various employers, industries,
countries and entrepreneurship was published
• From 2008, a platform for digitalizing all dissertations of SSE was realized. Also a scanning
of all previously published dissertations were started
• The Jubilee festivities – SSE Centennial Celebrations – were planned!!
