BHARAT RATNA Highest Civilian honour of Indai. Started in the year 1954. 1st recipient was C Raja Gopala Chary in the year 1954. No prize money. So far 41 persons have received it. The 41st receipient was Pandit Bheem sen Joshi (Hindustani music). Khan Abdul Gafar khan(1987) and Nelson Mandela (1990). 1st person to receive posthumously was Lal Bahadur Shastri. Vice President is the Chairman of Civilian awards committee.

DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD Started in the year 1969 the birth centenary of the father of Indian cinema. This is given by the GOI for life time achievement. Devika Rani (Achuut kanya) was the first winner in the year 1969, 2007 Mannaday singer and VK Murthy in the year 2008. D.Ramanaidu-film producer-winner of Dadasaheb Phalke award for the year 2009.Also Guinness book of records holder for producing 130 films

JNANPITH AWARD: The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award in India. It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Jain Shanti lal Prasad Rahul jain) family, the publishers of the The Times of India newspaper.

RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD This is considered to be the greatest honor in the region of Asia. This started in the year 1957. These are given away by the Philippines government. These are given in 6 fields. (International peace and understanding), (Community leadership), (Journalism Literature Creative Arts), (Public service), (Government service), (Emerging leadership, since 2002). Prize money sponsored by the Ford foundation (USA). The awards are given on August 31 every year on the birth anniversary of RMS. In total 42 Indians received the award up to 2009. Acharya Vinobha Bhave was the 1st Indian to receive in the year 1958 for Community leadership. Mother Teresa was the first women to receive in the year 1962 for International peace and understanding. 42nd Indian is Deep Joshi (Uttarakhand) in the year 2009 for Community leadership. For the year 2010: Government service - Pan Yue and Fu Qiping China. For Public Service - Christopher Bernido and Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido Philippines. For Community Leadership - A.H.M. PULITZER PRIZE: This is first awarded in the year 1917. This was established by Joseph Pulitzer. This prize is presented by Colombia University, USA. This is awarded for excellence in Journalism, literary achievement and musical composition. 2010: The 2010 Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in April 12, 2010. In journalism, The Washington Post won four awards while The New York Times won three. For the first time, an online source, ProPublica, won in what had previously been the sole province of print. A musical, Next to Normal, won the Drama award for the first time in 14 years. Country singer-songwriter Hank Williams, who died at age 29 in 1953, received a special citation. BOOKER PRIZE Man Booker Prize for Friction. is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original fulllength novel, written in the English language, by a citizen of either the Commonwealth of Nations, Ireland, or Zimbabwe. 1st awarded in the year 1968. PH Newby was the 1st winner. 2008 Aravind Adiga for White tiger. 2010 Man Booker Prize was won by British writer Howard Jacobson for his book The Finkler Question. He won 50,000 pounds prize So far 4 Indians received this award. Salman Rushdi (1981) for Mid Nights Children. Arundathi Rai (1997) for The God of Small Things. Kiran Desai (2006) for :Inheritance of Loss. Aravind Adiga (2008) for White Tiger. 2009 Man Booker International Prize Announced every 2 years. This was Alice Munro from Canada. OSCAR AWARDS: Also called Academy awards. Started in the year 1929 in US. Awarded for excellence for cinematic achievements. Awarded by motion picture Arts and Sciences.

NOBEL PRIZE: The awards were established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. They were first awarded in 1901 for achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. An associated prize, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was instituted by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969. The prizes are awarded by different associations. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences; the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; and the Swedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by a Swedish organisation, but by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Nobel Prize is given on December 10 every year. (Nobel Died on this day). In the year 2008, the committee announced that the it gives Nobel Prize in Non conventional source of energy sector. Madam Curie got the Nobel prize in 1903 for Physics and 1911 for Chemistry. So far 7 Indians received the Noble Prize. (Received in all the fields).

2010 NOBEL PRIZES Robert Edwards (British Scientist) whose pioneering research led to the birth of the Worlds first test-tube (In-vitro Fertilization (IVF)) baby on July 25, 1978 has won this year (2010) Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. (Patrick Steptoe (gynecologist) died in 1988) was the colleague of Robert Edwards. The first IVF baby Louise Joy Brown now 32. (though both were the pioneers, the prize cannot be awarded to both, as the rules do not permit to give award posthumously. An Indian team led by Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhyay developed markedly different IVF techniques. The Worlds second and Indiaa first test-tube baby (Kanupriya Agarwal alias Durga) was born in on October 3, 1978 Kolkata just 67 days after Louis Brown. But Dr. Mukherjee was not allowed to continue and he finally committed suicide in 1981. Russian born Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov (British-Russian citizen) were the joint winners of 2010 year Nobel Prize for Physics for their ground breaking work on experiment with graphene, a new form of Carbon with immense possibilities. This is the novel form of Carbon comprises a single layer of atoms arranged in a honey comb shaped lattice. Just one atom thick, it is the Worlds thinnest and strongest nano-material, almost transparent and able to conduct electricity and heat. This can be used in touch screens, light panels and solar cells. Chemistry: Nobel prize for chemistry for 2010 was won by 3 scientists for inventing new ways to bind carbon atoms with uses that range from fighting cancer to producing thin computer screens. Akira Suzuki, Ei-ichi Negishi and Richard F. Heck. A New Zealand television station (TVNZ) has suspended its breakfast show host Paul Henry for mispronouncing Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's name several times in a crude manner.Paul henry resigned on October 10, 2010 after the diplomatic protest from India. Mario Vargas Llosa (Peruvian-Spanish) author has won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his trenchant images of the individuals resistance, revolt and defeat. Nobel Prize for Peace: The jailed Chinese political activist Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel peace prize for the year 2010.

AWARDS
Peter Diamond (US), Dale Mortensen (US) and Christopher Pissarides (UK) won the Nobel Economics for the year 2010 for work on why supply and demand do not always meet in the labour market and elsewhere. ******* Commonwealth writers award was given to British-Indian author Rana Dasgupta for 2010 for his epic tale Solo *******

INDIRA GANDHI AWARD FOR NATIONAL INTEGRATION This award was initiated in the year 1985. This is given away by the INC (Indian National Congress). This is given for promoting National Integration. The award carries 1.51 lakh prize money. This is given on the day of Martyrdom day (October 31) of Smt. Indira Gandhi. The first recipient was swami Ranganadhanandha. The latest recipients for the year 2010 jointly won by A R Rahman and Ramakrishna Mission.

RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL SADHBHAVANA AWARD This award is given away on the birth anniversary (August 20) of the late PM Rajiv Gandhi. This award for the year 2010 was given to Islamic writer Moulana Wahiuddin. The award carries 5 lakh rupees
