A simile is a comparison between two

unlike things that have something in common. A simile always uses like or as I was as hungry as a bear. They slept like babies.

A metaphor is comparing between two unlike thinsg that have something in common without the use of like or as.
He has the courage of a lion. He is a turtle when he runs.
