savings
with solar
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Shamong Township may want
to hold off paving the streets with
gold, but it is seeing a significant
savings since the installation of
solar panels in May 2012.
Announced at a workshop
meeting on Oct. 22, committee of-
ficials reported a savings of $3,000
in the first year since the panels
were installed. The panels that
were placed on the roof of the
municipal building as well as the
maintenance building were origi-
nally purchased through a Power
Purchase Agreement. A PPA de-
fines all of the commercial terms
for the sale of electricity between
the two parties, including when
the project will begin commercial
operation, schedule for delivery
of electricity, penalties for under
delivery, payment terms and ter-
mination
According to township admin-
istrator Sue Onorato, the solar
panels worked as well in the first
year as the township had hoped,
resulting in a monthly savings of

Horse farms are a regular sight
for those driving the pine-laden
roads of Shamong Township. One
particular farm on Stokes Road
should stand out, though, not for
how it looks but for the work that
is happening on the inside.
Jennifer Hill moved to Sha-
mong with her husband Dan 16
years ago. They purchased the
house from someone whose
daughter had special needs but
loved and wanted to learn how to
ride horses. Jennifer also had a
passion for horses, and from
there, the idea for Kids Korral
Inc. was born.
"Kids Korral exists for the pur-
pose of offering children with
special needs the opportunity to
participate in horse-assisted ac-
tivities and obtain the benefits de-
rived through therapeutic horse-
manship while experiencing the
freedom, joy and fun of riding,"
Jennifer said. When I met her, it
pushed me to learn how to teach
kids, and thats when I found out
about NAHRA and the certifica-
tions they offer.
NAHRA is the North American
Riding for the Handicapped Asso-
ciation that was formed in 1969. It
has since become the Profession-
al Association of Therapeutic
Horsemanship. PATH is a federal-
ly registered nonprofit that pro-
motes equine-assisted activities
and therapies for individuals
with special needs. The certifica-
tion program took two years for
Hill to complete.
Hill, who also substitutes at In-
dian Mills Middle School, has
watched Kids Korral Inc. grow
from one lesson with one horse to
15 lessons with three different
horses each week. She knows the
program cannot accommodate
many more as it is currently con-
structed.
Obviously, our space and
number of horses are limited, but
we do the best we can with what
we have. Its been great, weve
been rocking and rolling now for
nine years, Hill said.
Participants receive 70-75
minute private lessons once a
week as well as a group ride on
Saturdays. Students receive a va-

The Joint Base
McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst is about
to become the newest beneficiary
of a unique conservation project
in Burlington County, Freeholder
director Joe Donnelly announced,
saying that the base will soon be
home to a major share of 4,000
new trees.
We have always prided our-
selves in working closely with the
Joint Base, its active military, and
of course, those veterans who de-
cide to call Burlington County
home, said Donnelly. Were
now expanding into new territo-
ry, by arranging for trees to be
planted on the base.
The locations of the plantings
still have to be decided, he con-
tinued, but it stands to reason
that trees bring aesthetic value to
any setting, particularly the resi-
dential housing areas on the
base.
Thousands of trees already
have been planted in Burlington
County under the states No Net
Loss Restoration Act, to make up
for the more than 130 acres of
trees cleared for the New Jersey
Turnpikes widening project in
Bordentown Township, Chester-
field and Mansfield.
The countys involvement in
the tree replanting program dates
back to early 2011, when Mans-
field was awarded $1.9 million in
state funds to replant trees in and
around the municipality. The
county then entered into a shared
services agreement with Mans-
field to provide technical assis-
tance with the design, bidding
and inspection of the plantings in
the township.
In exchange, the county re-
ceived 3,500 trees and shrubs,
most of which were planted in
county parks, including Crystal
Lake in Mansfield, and the new
County fairgrounds on Route 206
in Springfield.
Logically, you would say nice
project, end of story, said Don-
nelly. But actually, it doesnt end
there. The story gets better, in
that when all the bills were paid,
including trees, planting services,
and engineering costs, we wound
up with cost-savings of $600,000.
He said those leftover grant
dollars, coupled with another $1.1
million for the final phase of the
program, is making it possible to
include the Joint Base in the
plantings. The funds will pay for
another 4,000 trees and the equip-
ment needed to maintain the
plantings long-term.
The engineering responsibility
for this massive undertaking will
go to Taylor Design Group, which
freeholders awarded a $248,670
contract, which is also covered by
state grant dollars. The bid for
the trees will come later in the
year, in anticipation of a 2014
planting.

Shamong did not spend any
money for the panels as it bought
them from another company. The
township then buys the power
from them at a reduced rate. Not
included in the savings was the
fact the Shamong municipal
building got a newly shingled roof
as part of the deal for no addition-
al cost.
Its been a great venture for
the township, and were happy
with the savings weve seen so
far, Onorato said.
In other news:
The township released regula-
tions and safety precautions to
ensure Halloween trick or treat is
both safe and fun for everyone.
Be sure to leave the exterior
lights on for those "trick or treat-
ing" at or near your home.
All young children should
be accompanied by an adult.
Be sure to carry a flashlight
to increase your visibility to cars
sharing the roads.
If possible, add reflective
material or glow sticks to cos-
tumes to increase visibility.
Be careful when crossing
streets.
Warn children that they
should not eat candy until it is in-
spected at home. Check all candy
before eating to ensure that no
tampering has taken place
Out of courtesy to neigh-
bors, the township asks that all
"trick or treating" activities be
completed by 9 p.m.

Due to new state guidelines, the Sha-
mong Township Public Works Department
will go through the township one time only
the week of Nov. 4, picking up brush that
has been left properly in the township right
of way.
Please follow the rules listed below to in-
sure your brush is picked up.
Brush cannot be larger than six inches
in diameter nor less than four feet in
length. All brush must be tied with twine
in bundles of no more than 60 pounds. No
firewood length 12" to 24" or longer than
eight feet in length will be accepted.
Leaves cannot be included in the brush
bundles. The chipper does not grind the
leaves and there is no place to dispose of
the leaves.
Public Works cannot chip lumber, rail-
road ties, building material, telephone
poles or fence posts. Any bundles contain-
ing these materials will be rejected.
Please be considerate of employees and
do not place any poison ivy or briars in the
brush piles. Severe allergic reactions are
possible. Any bundles containing these
items will be rejected.
Decaying and excessively brittle
branches cannot be chipped and will be re-
jected.
Rejected piles will not be reconsidered.
Please remember, brush pick-up is pro-
vided as a free service to residents who are
cleaning up the yard around their house. It
is not to remove bushes, stumps, trees and
other debris resulting from plant removal,
lot clearing, pool installation, construc-
tion, addition, new decks, etc. Removal of
debris resulting from these activities
should be arranged by the homeowner or
the contractor. Bundles resulting from
these activities will be rejected and other
arrangements will have to be made by the
homeowner to remove them at their ex-
pense.
Township public works will pick up brush on Nov. 4
V
oting is one of the inalienable
rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important in-
alienable rights that we have as Amer-
icans, if not the most important in-
alienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for inde-
pendence in the 1700s based on the ral-
lying cry of no taxation without rep-
resentation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representa-
tion.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the
Constitution gave voting rights to non-
white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort was spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States over the age of 18
the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take ad-
vantage of that right at the polls for
the General Election next Tuesday,
Nov. 5.
Up for election are the states gover-
nor a race between Republican in-
cumbent Chris Christie and Democrat
Barbara Buono the states lieutenant
governor a race between Republican
Kim Guadagno and Democrat Milly
Silva as well as local positions.
In this weeks Sun, you will find in-
formation on exactly what you are vot-
ing for, when polls are open and details
on every polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find infor-
mation on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for, just
make sure you make your way to the
polls next Tuesday. Many people be-
fore us fought for your inalienable
right to do so.

riety of training throughout each

We cover basic riding skills as
well as the equipment and the
horses themselves. Its very recre-
ational. We incorporate games
and activities that allow them to
build social and emotional skills,
Hill said. It also is very physical.
Riding alone strengthens their
abdominal and core muscles.
The organization does not have
the budget for advertising or a
staff so it relies solely on word of
mouth and referrals for new par-
ticipants as well as volunteers to
assist with the rides. Kids who
began in the program are often a
part of it for several years.
One of our girls has been with
us since we started nine years
ago. She works with us as a volun-
teer. Thats something weve had
a few people do as well as eventu-
ally they graduate and become
volunteers within the program.
Its amazing to watch and really
special for them to help other
kids, Hill said. The best thing
we can do is help them reach a
point of independence.
Kids Korral is eligible for feder-
al and state grants but it also re-
lies on fundraisers throughout
the year.
We rely on volunteers as our
staff and different events to raise

great. Were happy to accommo-

said.
