Building Project Update

The new study rooms have been constructed in the Information/Reference Department and two new offices were carved out of the old staff breakroom. The drywall will be finished soon and will be painted before the new carpeting is laid. As soon as next week we will be reconstructing the shelving so we can move books from the area nearest the bay window as that is next on the list for new wall treatments and flooring. On Thursday, October 24, the power was turned off throughout the building so that new electrical wiring could be installed. It seems like there is still much to be done with only two short months left in the year, yet the project is still on schedule.

Mango Premiere
Learning a new language is free for all WWPL card holders with the Mango Languages database. We have upgraded our subscription to include all available languages as well as the new Premiere component, the first and only language and culture learning system that teaches through feature films. There are more than 40 foreign language courses and 16 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Mango Premiere will be released on November 12th. There are currently 20 films available and we will be showing one on November 23 from 11 AM 1 PM so you can see how it works. To learn more about Mango stop by the library reference desk and we will give you an introduction. Or call 317-8969391, ext. 117.

Holidays can bring families together but also can tear them apart. In Time to Remember two sisters come home to see their mother who is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimers. Old hurts and arguments come to the forefront and both girls struggle with their relationship with their mother and each other. Can there be a peaceful Thanksgiving in this household? For the younger audience, take home The Mayflower and the First Thanksgiving. A Learn Our History video that delivers a fun, animated version of the Mayflower story. Join a group of history students on their traveling bicycles as they travel back in time to the Pilgrims first settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In Desperate Crossing, the History Channel worked diligently using diaries of William Bradford and Edward Winslow to recreate the original story of the Mayflower Crossing and the first Thanksgiving. The descendants of the Wampanoag Tribe play their ancestors and speak of the feelings of their people. This doc-drama tells the true story of what life was like in those days, and the reasons why we celebrate this wonderful holiday every year!

Audio/Visual Materials
November, the month that we celebrate Thanksgiving, is a month characterized by turkey with all the trimmings, family, and a feeling of thanks for the things we have been given. Make your Thanksgiving special this year by checking out some DVDs that illustrate the reasons behind this yummy holiday season! Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is a classic that has been around for many years, and it tells the story of a very stressful Thanksgiving in wonderful Peanuts style! Dealing with uninvited guests and a non-existent meal can leave anyone uptight. Charlie Brown is no exception, but as usual, everyone ends up with a lot of good food and a wonderful time is had by all!
