Using the Elmo Visualiser at

Trinity
Geography project
Context – Used as part of a project ‘Building a
town for the future’.  The children had been
learning about maps and how they are made
in layers.

The visualiser, along with

some transparent paper, gave
the children an understanding
of the process that could not
have been achieved
otherwise.
The class teacher demonstrated the process to the children
using
the visualiser.  Prior to having a visualiser to use, his plan had
been to use an OHP.  The visualiser added much more to the
lesson.
• Added engagement from the children
• Much clearer picture, which aided understanding
• Opportunities to extend the activity – compare with a real
map, add grid lines to discuss references, talk about scale
All the children had a go at the activity, working in groups of four or five. Each
child drew a layer each and then took a snapshot of it using the Smart capture
toolbar. The visualiser’s ease of use alongside Smart applications gave all
children success at the activity and a good understanding of layering and why
maps are made in this way.

•The children enjoyed being hands on with the visualiser

•They were motivated and engaged throughout
•Using the visualiser gives them a good idea of how we can use technology to
aid our lives and how different systems can work together
•The Elmo Visualiser was easy enough and robust enough for the children to
use without issue
•This activity and similar ones using a visualiser promote collaboration
Making life easier
• A big impact on Reception classes learning mouse control
skills.
• Showing ‘Beebot’ to a whole class at a time, being able to
physically move him and discuss the controls etc.

I had previously thought that showing an image on the interactive whiteboard

would do exactly the same job, but the impact of viewing the actual objects
rather than just an image was astounding. With the wealth of simulated
activities and objects available for the interactive whiteboard, I wonder if we
are taking real life out of classrooms?
Elmo Around the School

techniques in art.
• Can cut down on preparation time for teachers.  No need to
scan in worksheets, pages from books etc.
• Can easily share ‘one off’ items such as artefacts or books can
