Asian Youth Energy Summit 2012 Event Report

Introduction

Energy Carta (www.energycarta.org) is a non-profit organization founded by a team of young adults who want to make a positive impact on the world. We bear the vision of becoming the platform connecting youth and sustainable development ideas, stimulating dialogues and action, through awareness programs and tangible opportunities. In this regard, Energy Carta successfully organized the fourth annual Asian Youth Energy Summit (AYES), Energy Cartas flagship event that frames conversation and debate on the most pressing global energy issues and opportunities. Annually, it brings together current and future leaders from energy technology, policy and business to participate in stimulating and engaging discussions.

Event Details

The theme for this years AYES was Reshaping Sustainability in Asia. Unlike the past AYES events, AYES 2012 saw the introduction of Changing the Game (CtG) Southeast Asia, an educational game that simulates the decision-making environment with players acting as policy-makers in the energy sector. Changing the Game enabled participants to apply the knowledge learned from talks in the conference into the game. With Changing the Game, AYES 2012 allowed greater active interactions among participants during the conference.

Target Participants: The audience was 80 youths from universities across Singapore, Southeast Asia, China and India who were passionate about the clean tech industry.

Asian Youth Energy Summit 2012 Event Report

Changing the Game (CtG) was originally developed by Energy Crossroads Denmark in a European context. For AYES 2012, Energy Carta adapted the game and tailoring it to the South Asian context. CtG simplifies a number of relevant discussions and thereby empowers the participants with deeper knowledge and understanding of the complexities involved. Dealing with energy systems usually involves dealing with a lot of numbers, which tends to scare most people away. In order to make energy planning accessible for everyone, we sought to visualize things as much as possible. Therefore Changing the Game uses LEGO bricks to translate words and numbers into a visual representation. A lot of work has been put into making the game playable by everyone irrespective of prior knowledge. A diverse range of learning outcomes is achieved. Feedback from students who played the game shows that they have not only learned about technical issues, but also gained an understanding of the intricacies of negotiation and the dilemmas politicians face when trying to reach compromises that satisfy everyone.

Audience

The audience was comprised mainly of students from the both local and overseas tertiary institutions. The breakdown was as followed 65 local students from National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University and various polytechnics. 20 foreign participants from Thailand, Indonesia, China, India, Philippines and Vietnam We polled our registrants on their level of knowledge with questions such as Tell us why would you be interested to join Asian Youth Energy Summit 2012. Sample replies included: 10% - Active involvement I have participated in Shell Eco Marathon 2010/2011 and built vehicles which are not only fuel efficient but are also environmental friendly. Being part of Solar Decathlon 2013, I wish to network with people in the energy industry to see if there is a chance for collaboration. 30% - Interested well read passive involvement I decided to attend AYES 2012 because I think this event will reveal some new ways to learn and to be successful that may suit me. Studying in a global environment, I'm always seeking for new inspiring ideas as well as new opportunities to develop my skills. I've been studying and writing papers on Low Carbon Sustainable Development Options, AYES will be a good exposure and experience in putting knowledge into 'actions'. It is also to understand the complications and the bigger picture of 'green' knowledge. 60% - Passionate would like to learn more I am passionate about nature, energy issues and sustainable development, and AYES 2012 seems like the perfect place to meet like-minded people in a game/scenario based simulation. I am extremely excited to get a chance to be part of this two-day Summit! As a student in Singapore where energy is crucial for the nation's development, I am aware of today's global energy woes and I am committed to contributing my part in addressing such problems. I believe that AYES 2012 provides me with the perfect opportunity to discuss energy issues with young leaders from Asia and I am really looking forward to it.
