Provosts Undergraduate Fellowship Information & Instructions

The Provosts Undergraduate Fellowship (PUF) supports undergraduate students doing research or creative projects under the guidance of UC Davis faculty members. Students from all discipline areas are eligible to apply. Past projects have involved laboratory research, field studies, survey research, film production, design and creation of art elements, music composition, fine arts performances, travel to library or research collections, and many other endeavors. Group projects are not appropriate, however, separate (but linked) projects may be considered. The maximum award is $1,800 toward approved costs directly related to the project. Deadlines: There are two calls each academic year. The first call has a deadline of Monday, November 4, 2013 for projects that will be carried out in Winter/Spring quarter. The second call has a deadline of Monday, May 6, 2013 for projects that will be carried out in Summer/Fall quarter. Eligibility: Applicants must be either full or part time registered UC Davis undergraduates at the time their research is conducted. Students must be in good academic standing, meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress. If the project is to be done over the summer, the recipient must be on continuing student status during that summer and is required to be an enrolled undergraduate at least the following fall quarter. Level of Independence: Ideally, applicants will propose projects which are wholly or substantially of their own design. However, it is recognized that in certain fields or at certain levels of complexity, it is unrealistic to expect an undergraduate to conceive of or field a completely independent project. It is also recognized that students benefit in being part of a sponsoring professor's on-going project. Even in cases where the student's project is a part of a larger study, it is important to specify the student's independent role and responsibilities. Write for an educated, lay audience: Since applications will be evaluated by faculty members from a variety of disciplines, the proposal should be written at a level understandable to reviewers outside the student's specialty. If faculty members cannot understand the project, they cannot judge it, and therefore cannot score it favorably. Applications: Instructions for preparing a complete application is attached to this announcement. Applications are reviewed by the PUF Advisory Committee, a multidisciplinary committee of faculty, chaired by the Director of the Undergraduate Research Center. In evaluating proposals the committee considers the following: * * * * * * the educational opportunity that the project will provide for the applicant the applicants academic preparation that is relevant to the project the feasibility of the project the faculty sponsors letter of support the overall clarity and quality of the proposal the demonstrated ability to follow instructions

Instructions for Preparing a Complete Application

Please follow instructions carefully. Applicants who fail to follow instructions may lose points in the review process. ALL pages of the application MUST BE TYPED, including the cover page. Pages must be assembled in the order indicated below. Each page must contain the applicants name and the title of the project at the top. 1. Cover Page. Download a word file of this form at http://undergraduateresearch.ucdavis.edu, type in your information, and format to one page. Provide a brief (25 words or less) description of your proposed project. The TYPED cover page must be attached to each copy of the fellowship application. Describe the Proposed Project. Include a brief account of approaches/methods you intend to use; the time frame of when the work will be accomplished; discuss the context of this project to other research/creative projects (provide at least 3 research citations in the body of the narrative and in the references). Length: three pages (double-spaced, 12 pt font). Note: if necessary, the research citations may be included on a fourth page. Learning Potential and Relationship of Project to Educational Goals. Discuss the significance of this experience in relation to your academic and/or career plan (i.e., Why this project? What do you get from it?). Length: maximum 100 words. Note: this paragraph is in addition to the 3-page narrative described above. Detailed Budget Outline and Justification Narrative. (This is in addition to the above 3-page narrative) Place your requested and minimum budget in a table so it is easy for the committee to interpret. While preparing your budget, please take into consideration the following: a. Award requests may not exceed $1,800. b. Salaries are not funded. c. The Committee expects that applicants will have investigated the potential for sharing equipment/computer software/books commonly found on campus. Requests to purchase new equipment known to be widely used and already commonly found on campus require justification. Requests for computer software or books must be accompanied by a statement indicating the applicant has investigated the availability of the software or books in other units/computer labs/library on campus and has determined that purchase is the only way to complete the project. d. Any approved, non-expendable equipment purchased with Fellowship funds are to be retained by PUF or by the sponsoring department, as appropriate, at the conclusion of the project. e. Travel requests should reflect actual transportation and lodging costs, not per diem nor mileage calculations. You MUST indicate two levels of funding in your application a requested budget (not to exceed $1,800) and a minimum budget. Your requested budget should allow you to complete your project at an optimal level. Your minimum budget is the amount below which your project might have to be abandoned. Both levels of budget requests must be itemized. Clearly indicate the elements deleted or reduced in the minimum budget, and briefly describe the impact of the reduced budget on the project. 5. A photocopy of your UC Davis undergraduate transcript, covering coursework taken including Winter Quarter 2013 should be attached. SISweb transcripts will work for this purpose.
