Changsha was the site of Mao Zedong's conversion to communism. It was the scene of major battles in the Sino-Japanese War of 193745 and was briefly occupied by the Japanese. Changsha is the capital city of
Hunan , in south-central China , located on the lower reaches of Xiang River , a branch of the Yangtze River. Its municipality covers an area of 4,563 square miles and, according to the 2010 Census, a population of 7,044,118 inhabitants.

HISTORY
During the 1st millennium BC, Changsha was the center of the southern part of the Yangtze River valley state of Chu. Changsha was important from the time of the Qin dynasty (221207 BC). In AD 7501100 Changsha was a major commercial hub, and its population increased greatly. Under the Qing dynasty, from 1664, it was the capital of Hunan province, and it was a major rice market.

CULTURE
Yuelu Academy
It was founded in AD 976 (Song Dynasty), destroyed by war in 1127, and rebuilt in 1165 (Southern Song Dynasty). It is the Thousand Year Old center of culture and learning of southern China. Rich in history and beautiful period architecture, a visit to the academy will put you in touch with the ancient elites of southern China.

LIFE
Orange Island Fireworks
This event start from 8 p.m. every Saturday and last for 15 minutes, with the theme "Orange Island romantic, bright Star City". The firework festival is held where surrounded by mountain, river, island and urban landscape attracts a large number of tourists.

Xiang Embroidery
It is considered one of the four greatest embroiderystyles of China, and has been

practiced in that country for hundreds of years. The examples of embroidery have been found which date back more than 2,300 years.

Liuyang Chrysanthemum Stone


It is reputed as "the best in the world". Different from other stones, Liuyang chrysanthemum stones look gray or ash black with naturally generated chrysanthemum-shaped white patterns on the surface.

Cuisine
Food in Changsha is famously described as xiang cai as Xiang River is the major river that borders the city to the west. Xinang cai is known for spicy food. Huogongdian is Local Hunan cuisine. You might enjoy stinky tofu, Changsha Doupi, Pineapple bread, lamb kebabs, beef in baskets, corn soup and vegetables that are cooked in front of you.

Tianxin Pavilion Tombs of King Ma


It i s a n arch aeo lo gi cal si te that consists of two saddle-shaped hills and contained the tombs of three people from the western Han Dynasty (206 BCE 9 CE): Marquis Li Cang, his wife and a male believed to have been their son. The site was excavated from 1972 to 1974. It was built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. The main part of the pavilion is held up by sixty wooden supports. The stone balustrades in front of and behind the pavilion were carved with sixty-two stone lions, horses, dragons, plum blossoms, which reflect Changshas identity as an important city in the Chu-Han Period.
