The Sun
With the request for proposals
going out in September, township
council was met with criticism on
Oct. 28 from both the union and
residents over the possibility of
privatizing township sanitation
services.
With members of the sanita-
tion department present for sup-
port, president of the Communi-
cations Workers of America
Local 1036 Adam Liebtag present-
ed the council with a response let-
ter regarding the RFP as well as
vocalizing his concerns during
the public comment portion of
the meeting.
The RFP was issued with very
little debate and discussion,
Liebtag said.
Liebtag spoke on behalf of the
11 sanitation workers currently
employed by the townships pub-
lic works department, attesting to
the quality work they deliver. He
also added that, in addition to col-
lecting trash, the sanitation work-

As it held its annual Water Fes-
tival in Riverton Memorial Park
on Oct. 27, the Pompeston Creek
Watershed Association also used
the day to mark a very important
milestone, the associations 50th
anniversary.
The group held the event for all
locals who wished to learn more
about how to protect the water-
shed and also hosted activities for
children who participated in a
scavenger hunt around the creek
for items including wild pine and
spruce.
We saw a lot of different kinds
of animals, Moorestown Friends
School sixth grader Ella Han-
namirian said.
Formed in 1963, the PCWA was
created as a response to growing
concern in the community in re-
gard to effluent from the Cin-
naminson Sewage Treatment
plant pouring into the creek, ac-
cording to the PCWA website.
Having a sewage plant dump-
ing into the little creek was just
too much, vice president of
PCWA Debbie Lord said.
In addition, Lord said there
was also some growing concern
over mosquito sprayings that had
occurred in the area and their ef-
fect on the creek.
This group started with the
purpose of protecting the creek,
Lord said.
With two main water-monitor-
ing sites in Moorestown and Cin-
naminson, the watershed also ex-
tends into parts of Riverton and
Delran.
According to the PCWA web-
site, while it is relatively small,
the creek empties into the
Delaware River, at a point that is
less than 1.5 miles from the sur-
face water intake for the New Jer-
sey-American Water Company

Plenty of better uses for
money slated for new park
So how come they can afford to build a
brand new park in the middle of Main
Street, but they cannot afford to fix the
David Gentile Skatepark?
Even if the skatepark is out of question,
what about repaving Second Street from
Camden Avenue to Church Street? Or the
intersection on Lenola Road and Route 38?
I cant tell you how many people popped
their tires on those ruts and potholes.
I think this is absurd and should be ad-
dressed.
Joe Bosanac
O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the superstorm watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed peoples
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our states largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
stronger than the storm. Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy cant
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
well continue to do so next year.
Local support isnt just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, youll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and its something that
you should definitely do.
Its a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders started its
seasonal flu and pneumonia vac-
cine clinics for adult county resi-
dents and will continue with a
total of 19 clinics countywide
through Dec. 30.
It is important to get a flu shot
every year because influenza
viruses continually change and
vaccine success depends, in part,
on the match between the types of
virus in the vaccine and the virus
occurring among members of the
public, said Freeholder Director
Joe Donnelly.
Residents with computer ac-
cess should schedule their flu
shot by visiting the health depart-
ment website, www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/health. People can cur-
rently schedule their appoint-
ments online. Residents who have
scheduled their appointment on-
line and bring the printed and
completed consent form will be
fast-tracked through the clinic.
Walk-ins will still be welcomed
but may have to wait in line.
In addition to targeting the
usual higher risk groups, such as
those aged 50 and older, people
with chronic medical conditions,
weakened immune or respiratory
systems and pregnant women, all
youths through age 23 are advised
by the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention to receive
seasonal flu vaccines this year to
reduce the spread of flu in
schools.
The county clinic is for adults
age 18 and older but parents can
take their children to physicians
for flu vaccines and many other
county locales will be giving the
seasonal flu vaccine, including
Southern Jersey Family Medical
Centers (www.sjfmc.org/) in
Burlington City and Pemberton.
For people who have not been
immunized against pneumonia, a
pneumo vaccine is recommend-
ed for people who have not had
one in five years and if the first
one was given before age 65.
Influenza is a very contagious
illness with pneumonia being one
of the most common complica-
tions in high-risk groups. To pre-
vent transmission to high-risk
groups, a seasonal flu vaccine is
also recommended for health-care
providers; household contacts (in-
cluding children) of high-risk peo-
ple and caregivers of children.
The county health department
accepts Medicare Part B to
cover the cost for seasonal flu and
pneumonia vaccines. A donation
of $15 for seasonal flu vaccine and
$25 for pneumonia is recommend-
ed by those not covered by
Medicare if residents can afford
it.
People who have Medicare cov-
erage and belong to a managed
care plan or HMO, should go to
their regular health care
providers to receive immuniza-
tions.
Flu clinics continue until Dec. 30

water serves as drinking water
for many residents.
Lord explained that water test-
ing conducted by PCWA con-
firmed the associations con-
cerns.
We found that the river violat-
ed the standards for E. coli, fecal
coliform and phosphorus, Lord
said.
With water quality testing be-
ginning in Moorestown in 1998,
PCWA members began gathering
samples, which were then ana-
lyzed in state Department of En-
vironmental Protection-certified
laboratories.
When we found this stuff in
the water, we went to Rutgers and
got a grant, Lord said.
Adding a second water-moni-
toring site in Cinnaminson in
2004, the PCWA worked with the
NJDEP, the Rutgers Cooperative
Extension Water Resources Pro-
gram and The Watershed Insti-
tute and collected data between
2001 and 2008 that was deemed
sufficient for the NJDEP to ac-
cept.
Subsequently, Pompeston
Creek was added with a priority
ranking to the List of Water Qual-
ity Limited Waters.
The partnership between the
Rutgers Cooperative Extension
Water Resources Program and
PCWA was then awarded a $1 mil-
lion grant from the NJDEP to
help aid best practices preventing
pollutants from entering the
creek, such as installing rain gar-

Residents deserve to know the
impact before the council makes
a decision, Liebtag said.
In addition, Liebtag urged the
council to hold a public meeting
on the issue before a resolution to
award a trash-collecting contract
reaches a future council agenda.
Township manager Scott
Carew said he would be happy to
meet with the representatives
after the township receives bids
and agreed with Liebtags com-

Moorestowns sanitation workers.
Its not lost on me and its not
lost on this council, Carew said.
I personally see the value.
In addition, both Councilman
Greg Newcomer and Deputy
Mayor Chris Chiacchio volun-
teered to serve as liaisons along
with Carew when meeting with
representatives following the
bids.
Mayor Stacey Jordan also
added that the RFP serves as a
way to evaluate the townships
options.
We need to vet it out and do
what is best for the township,
Jordan said. Its not something
that were taking lightly.
Local residents also voiced sup-

workers during the public com-

I think a local force is some-
thing to be preserved, Monique
Begg said.
Resident James Little also
spoke about the importance of

township.
Its important because were
all family, Little said.
In addition, resident Kathy
Sutherland said there was no
place for outsourcing in
Moorestown and that the coun-
try is outsourced to the brink of
oblivion.
Getting rid of people is not al-
ways the answer or the solution,
Sutherland said.
Following the meeting, Carew
said there had been no talks of
letting go of any of the town-
ships sanitation workers.
Carew explained that the bids
will open on Thursday, Nov. 14
and will then be checked for com-
pliance in addition to a financial
analysis completed by director of
finance Thomas Merchel.
Carew also added that the
township will be looking at not
just trash collection services, but
will also factor in the extra servic-
es the township sanitation work-
ers provide.
Its not just going to be dollars
versus dollars, Carew said.
In Liebtags letter to the coun-
cil, he also mentioned that the
unions current contract is due to
expire with the township in a
matter of months.
Finally, the fact that our cur-
rent collective bargaining agree-
ment is due to expire at the end of
the calendar year only exacerbat-
ed this situation, and we are con-
cerned that the township may be
seeking these bids in order to in-
fluence and affect the terms of
our successor agreement which
we will be negotiating with you
shortly, he wrote.
In a press release issued Sept. 6
from the township, an announce-
ment was made that the township
would be advertising for bids from
private trash haulers as part of
the goal from town council given
to Jordan and Chiacchio and
working with Carew to find signif-
icant cost-saving initiatives with
the goal of cutting $1 million.
According to the notice pub-
lished on the townships website,
bids for solid waste collection
services will open on Nov. 14 at 10
a.m. at the Municipal Building.

Bids for solid waste collection to
open Nov. 14 in Moorestown
On Friday, Oct.18, Moorestown
residents gathered for an evening
of fun and fine dining at the
ninth annual Twin Oaks Commu-
nity Services Progressive Dinner.
The evening started with cock-
tails and hors doeuvres at the
beautiful home of Jon and Loret-
ta Runyan. Guests then proceed-
ed to one of 14 fabulous homes
throughout Moorestown for a
gourmet dinner prepared by a tal-
ented area chef. The evening con-
cluded with a special dessert re-
ception hosted by Jim and Mau-
reen Brennan.
Participating chefs included:
Chef Tanya Barbarics, I Love
This Food! Personal Chef Serv-
ice; Executive Chef Markese Bev-
erly, The ChopHouse; Chef Adam
DeLosso, Garces Catering; Chef
Michael Ferguson, Caffe Aldo
Lamberti; Chef Todd Fuller, The

Executive Chef Jonathan Jerni-

Two featured restaurants this
year were Amis Trattoria and
Garces Catering. The parent com-
panies of these restaurants, Vetri
Family and Garces Group, both
recently signed contracts with
PREIT to open restaurants at the
Moorestown Mall. The new
restaurants, Osteria and Distrito,
will raise the bar for culinary ex-
periences in the area, and the
Moorestown Progressive Dinner
was the perfect setting to demon-
strate their culinary expertise.
Proceeds from the Progressive
Dinner benefitted the Twin Oaks
Food Pantries and services for
children and adults with develop-
mental disabilities. By attending,
guests invested in a future filled
with hope and helped deserving
community members.

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !

dens and rain barrels.
The PCWA also published its
findings in The Status of Pompe-
ston Creek from 1998 2008: A
Water Quality Monitoring Re-
port.
In addition, the PCWA also
holds regular cleanup efforts
around the creek, including a
Fountain Farms Park Cleanup,
which was held at the Cinnamin-
son part of Pompeston Creek on
Willow Drive on Nov. 2. PCWA
was also on hand with a macro in-
vertebrate table for Wet Fest,
hosted by Cinnaminson Town-
ship Public Schools on Oct. 4 at
Palmyra Nature Cove in Palmyra.
Although PCWA has temporar-
ily stopped chemical and bacteri-
al monitoring, Lord explained
that the association still conducts
a yearly bio assessment of macro
invertebrate organisms (those
without a backbone, but can be
seen with the naked eye) living in
the creek.
With samples of the organisms
present at the Water Festival,
Lord explained that the organ-
isms help the association discern
the state of the creek by looking
at the level of pollutants in which
the organism can survive.
Some of the organisms pulled
from the watershed included
freshwater clams, lung snails,
dragonfly nymphs and aquatic
worms.
The water is staying dirty,
Lord said.
She also added that most of the
organisms found in the water are
still considered Group 2 and
Group 3 organisms, which are
able to live in moderately polluted
and heavily polluted water, re-
spectively.
Moorestown Friends School
fourth grader Emmet Kimberly
said of all the organisms present-
ed at the festival, his favorites
were the tadpoles of both a green
frog and a grey tree frog, which
are not part of the macro inverte-
brate classification.
Since they didnt have an ex-
oskeleton, they had organs, I
liked them better, Kimberly said.
In addition, PCWA also visits
local schools and community cen-
ters to educate residents and stu-
dents about the creek and best
practices for keeping pollutants
out of the water.
PCWA president Mark Jen-
drzejewski also stressed the im-
portance of teaching younger
generations in the watershed
towns, since they play a hand in
the future of the creek.
You have to give them exam-
ples of how to do it, Jendrzejews-
ki said.
For example, Jendrzejewski ex-
plained that two years ago, the
PCWA visited a school in River-
ton and installed rain gardens,
which help prevent pollutants
from running off into the storm
drains.
Our main focus is the educa-
tion, because if everyone isnt in-
volved, it does matter, Jendrze-
jewski said.

PCWA, visit pompestoncreek.org.
