Chapter Breakdown As far as the outline of my thesis is concerned, chapter 2 focuses on the theoretical views of linguistic interference in translations.

Interference and its characteristics will be presented, definitions by several scholars will be mentioned and different approaches towards interference will be discussed. Factors of occurrence of interferencc Theories and research by several scholars will be mentioned and the concept of inter-language will be discussed in detail in chapter 3. 4th Chapter focuses on the frequency of occurrence of interference in translations of the trainees during their process towards proficiency. The sub chapters of chapter 4 will deal with a particular type of interference, describe its characteristics and give several examples from the translations of the trainees. Different types of interference will be discussed such as lexical interference, syntactic interference, grammatical interference, interference in typography and board line cases etc. Chapter 5 will include results summarizing the types of interference in individual texts. Supplementary data, specially questionnaires will be included in chapter 6. Chapter 7 will include conclusion and suggestion for further research. Introduction No two languages are the same. Any language has got unique features which are different from another. Languages may show certain similarities to each other at different levels, but for the most part they are different. Owing to this reason, the task of translation remains a challenge. The linguistic interference or L 1 interference is largely seen in the works of the professional translators in their early years of profession. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of interference in translations of the trainees. The two languages concerned here are Sinhala and English; Sinhala is the source language and English the target language. It should be emphasized that my intention is not to criticize bad translations but to explore this phenomenon in the translations of trainees. In the process of translation, linguistic interference happens to be an unavoidable factor as any translator depends on the source text. Frequency in occurrence of interference forms can be reduced by practice and experience which means that there will be more interference in the translations of trainees than in those done by professional translators. Sentences which sound clumsy or weird can serve as indicators of interference. The concept of inter-language will be discussed in detail in this research as the inter-language forms are frequently seen whenever and wherever two languages are in contact.

Significance It is definitely helpful to know the source of interference because it enables the translator to analyze where the problem originated and what he/she should be careful of. This could help them to avoid, at least, serious mistakes caused by interference, and in the course of time, as they gain experience, they should be able to better withstand interference. Aim The aim of this research is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of interference in the translations of trainees, based on their translations from Sinhala to English. Objectives To find out the similarities and dissimilarities of the two languages concerned Sinhala (the source language) English (the target language) To find out the different types of interference, and the factors which cause the occurrence of interference in the translation of trainees To find out at which level the interference mostly occur in the translation works of the trainees Research Question (i) (ii) What are the factors which cause the occurrence of interference in translations? What are the characteristics of interference in the translation works of trainees?
