CHAPLAIN'S CORNER: We have just received word that a long time member
and friend, Millie Thompson passed away on October 18, 2013 and Beverly Carsons son passed away unexpectedly and Melodee Barber lost her sister, so much sorrow. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families and friends. Lucille Schlie had a turn for the worst when her legs became infected. She was in the hospital and then the care home but is looking forward to returning to her home before the end of the month. Hugh King was home for two days and then back to Martinez for more treatments. He was so happy to be home, if only for two days. Kathy Linares is still at home, getting better each day. She is in good spirits and anxious to being well again.

Continued from page 1 I would like to form a committee of at least 3 people to brain storm for future fund raisers. We need to replenish funds for repairs to the Post. If not for the generous donations of our members it would have made getting these repairs done very difficult to impossible. If you have an idea for a fund raiser or would like to be on the committee please let me know. You can always drop your suggestions in the suggestion box as well. We will be taking donations for Buddy Poppys on November 11, 2013, Veterans Day at Wal Mart and Big Lots. All other stores in the area have turned us down because of the liability. Dianne Medina needs volunteers to work shifts on Veterans Day. We need these donations so that we can continue to help Veterans. Diannes number is 916-921-2312. This will be a big day, Buddy Poppys, Parade and Steak Dinner at the Post. I would like to congratulate the Post Pool League for taking First Place this year and last year. This event brings money into the Post. The league has been providing Karaoke on the Sundays that they have hosted the pool tournament. I would like to thank Henry Bustillos for all his hard work and time spent. VETERANS - Have you been exposed to any unknown chemicals? Whether you are a Vietnam Veteran, Gulf War Veteran, Operation Iraq War Veteran, or an Operation Enduring Freedom War Veteran, you may have been exposed to some unknown chemical. Are you aware of all the potential hazardous chemicals and have you claimed all of your potential exposures through the Veterans Administration claim system? If not, consider reviewing the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website that provides the potential exposures to chemicals in the area you served. At the time of your active duty deployments, many of these exposures were unknown but were discovered later. You have a right to claim these exposures for your service to this great Nation. Please review the following information on the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website for further details to potential exposures. Veterans' exposure to the chemicals listed below potentially could be linked to certain health problems, depending on a number of other factors: Agent Orange - Herbicide used during the Vietnam era to destroy foliage and crops Pesticides (Gulf War) - Substances used to repel or destroy pests such as insects and pathogens Burn Pits - Open-air pit waste disposal at military sites Depleted Uranium - Uranium used in military tank armor and some bullets Sulfur Fire (Al Mishraq, Iraq) - Sulfur plant burned almost a month in June 2003; large amounts of sulfur dioxide released into the air Chromium (Qarmat Ali) - Hexavalent chromium in contaminated sodium dichromate dust; water treatment plant in 2003 Camp Lejeune Water Supplies - Tap water contaminated by industrial chemicals at Marine Corps Base Camp in the 1950s to 1980s PCBs - Polychlorinated biphenyls used as coolant and insulating fluid Industrial Solvents - Usually liquid, used to dissolve, degrease, clean, strip paint, etc. If you need assistance in filing your claim with the VA for these potential exposures please contact our VFW Post Services Officer, John Cox.

EACH AND EVERY VOTE COUNTS - Consider joining any and all Veteran Organizations for which you are qualified. Why, because our wounded warriors returning from a war zones need our support. Each organization membership is one more vote in Congress. Politicians respond to Veterans vote because they know that we are organized. As an example, I belong to our VFW Post 8762 plus The American Legion, Am Vets, Fleet Reserve and Tin Can Sailors. That gives me five votes to help need veterans. You can do the same. Think about it. Membership Incentive - Remind your prospective VFW members that the annual cost increases from $35.00 to $45.00 on January 1, 2014. Its a good reason to join now. Many qualified veterans have never been asked to join the VFW. Ask them.
