I have you on my list of people to contact when the volunteer program at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge has been reinstated. We are now able to have volunteers once again. There have been a few changes to the volunteer program due to changes with U.S. Fish and Wildlife staff and contractors. The major change is that we are looking for people who can commit for a minimum of 4 months, instead of 3 months. I am now taking applications for the February through June time period. I will most likely be recruiting for June volunteers sometime around late February. If you are available for February, you may submit your resume right away.

Here is the text for the volunteer positions:
Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is taking applications for volunteers for a minimum of 4 months beginning in February 2014. Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge/Battle of Midway National Memorial is located within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument approximately 1350 miles northwest of Honolulu. It is home to the worlds largest albatross colony, threatened green sea turtles, as well as endangered Hawaiian monk seals and Laysan ducks. Travel from Honolulu to Midway, and room and board while on Midway will be provided. Duties: Volunteer work will include seabird monitoring and banding, invasive plant species removal, native plant propagation, habitat restoration, equipment maintenance, marine debris removal, endangered Laysan duck monitoring, data entry, and numerous other projects. Requirements: Work will be 40 hours/week with additional weekend work when necessary. Applicants must be physically fit with no significant medical issues, able to walk up to 3 miles/day, swim/snorkel, ride a bicycle, carry up to 50 lbs., willing to spray herbicide with proper protective gear. Must be willing to handle albatross and other seabirds for banding and monitoring studies. Must be able to perform all duties in various weather conditions including high heat and humidity, strong winds, and rain. Applicants must possess a valid passport that will not expire before December 2014. Due to the number of applicants, preference will be given to applicants with a science degree, remote island field experience, bird banding experience, and/or habitat restoration experience.
