Fibers and Felt Project 9/30/2013 Day 1; Intro to fiber artists and Needle Felting Central Focus (Remove

for edTPA) Students will learn about a few fiber artists and the mechanics of needle felting in anticipation of designing a sculptural fiber animal. I will demonstrate the mechanics and basics of needle felting technique. Context For Learning (Remove for edTPA) -The students are always drawing animals and will most likely be very excited about creating their own animals. -Most students have not heard of needle felting and do not know how it works. -All materials will be provided: polyfill, wool, and felting needles. They will work on cutting mats, but will also have the choice to bring in an old mouse pad as a work surface. -This is a mixed age classroom made up of 5th to 6th graders. -This class is a double period, so it is an hour and a half long. Modifications may include: -Some students may need more or less time to complete each exercise and will work at their own pace. -Some students may need extra redirection according to their IEP Visual Art Standards 5th grade: OHIO 5PE (understanding) Focus attention on selected artworks to identify and pose questions about aesthetic qualities (e.g., sensory, organizational, emotional) in the works. 6th grade OHIO 3PR (skill) Generate ideas and engage in thoughtful planning when solving a visual art problem. Learning Objectives

Learning Principles- Students will: 1. Explore how medium affects the perception of a work 2. Engage in thoughtful planning of a design for a felted animal. Skills-Students will: 1. Learn how to felt with a needle Knowledge/Facts- Students will: 1. List vocabulary: Fiber, medium, form 2. Repeat safety rules: always point the felting needle away from yourself; do not felt with the object in your hand. Instructional Strategies & Learning Tasks -At the beginning of class, remind students of their tasks for the day: Listening and taking notes to a presentation, finish clay tiles from a previous project, and beginning a design for a felted animal. (5 minutes) -Run through a power point presentation about fiber artists and the background of felting. (10 minutes) -Gather students around a table to demonstrate needle felting (10 minutes) -Distribute an assignment sheet specifying due dates and requirements for the project (5 minutes) -Work time for the remainder of the class. (60 minutes)

Informal & Formal Assessments (Informal = IF, Formal = FO) -Call on students both with raised hands and without raised hands to ask questions about emotional and sensory perceptions of example work in the power point. (IF) -Ask students to repeat instructions back about how to safely use a felting needle.(IF) -Direct students to either finish their clay tile from the previous tile or to begin designing an animal/frame/nest for the felt project. -Observe that students are working quietly for the remainder of class. They will receive a participation score based on a rubric from 1-4 points. This score is daily. Points are deducted for tardiness, missing materials, and behavior that distracts others. (FO)

Instructional Resources & Materials Sketchbook (1 per student) or extra paper (30 sheets) Pencil (1 per student) Powerpoint Assignment sheet (20) Felt and Polyfill (about a handful) for demonstration Set of felting needles (1) Self-healing cutting mat (1)
