3 Day Desktop Training Course Overview

Course Overview This three day course is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and experience to create a basic Quadstone Paramics traffic microsimulation model including both urban and freeway components. This course will cover the key topics of network build, simulation, data generation and reporting, and presentation techniques allowing the student to confidently apply the Paramics traffic microsimulation software across are range of application areas. Training Prerequisites No specific prerequisites are required however any experience of traffic engineering or transport planning techniques and methodologies will be advantageous. Who the course is intended for? This entry level course is suitable for all types of users including existing traffic professionals who are keen to learn new skills and students new to traffic modeling who require a solid foundation of knowledge to draw on. Course Outline - Day 1 Session 1: Introduction to Paramics Modeller. This session will explain the layout of the Modeller window, navigation in 2D/3D, and the mouse controls used to build a network. Students will become comfortable with navigation and mouse control understanding the varied parts of the Modeller display and their importance during model development. Session 2: Project Library. This session covers the use of the Paramics Library tool to help in the preparation of modeling studies and network builds. The Project Library can help with the standardisation/organisation of core files that are used during model development saving the engineer time and ensuring consistency across of base and test network scenarios. Session 3: Overlays. Overlays are the foundation on which most Paramics networks are developed. Students will learn how to import overlay(s), correctly scale, position, group, and customise their display. Session 4: Nodes & Links. This session covers the basic building blocks of a Paramics network. Students will learn how to create nodes and links to create a skeleton network. In addition students will learn how to avoid introducing constraints into the model through poor node placement and link category selection. Session 5: Intersections. Proper intersection coding is a critical component of any traffic model. Session 5 covers the three most common types of intersections; priority controlled, signalised, and roundabouts. Students will learn how to effectively code intersections to replicate real world layouts. Session 6: Ramps. Students will learn how to create both on and off ramps and how to fine tune the special behaviour that takes place at both to accurately reflect on street conditions. Session 7: Control Points. Control points are used to fine tune the layout of intersections, adjust stopline behaviour, and add curvature to links. This fine tuning can positively alter the simulation results and improve calibration. During this session students will learn when and where to adjust control points to obtain the best results. Session 8: Zones. In this session students will learn about the different types of zone and how each should be used to obtain the most realistic representation of the real world scenario replicated in the model.

Course Outline - Day 2 Session 9: Demands. In this session students will become proficient in specifying OD matrix style demand for a Paramics model. Paramics use of an OD matrix better enables it to forecast future alternatives as traffic doesnt have hard coded routes and can therefore accurately model changes in route choice between base and test scenarios. Session 10: Driver Behaviour. Session 10 outlines the core behaviour configurations provided in Paramics. Students will become confident using both global and localised behaviour configurations as well as learning when and where these modifiers should be used. Session 11: Routing. Students will learn about the different route choice algorithms available in Paramics and, using the interactive tools provided, gain an appreciation of the suitability of different assignment methods to various network layouts. Session 12: Processor. Processor is a powerful tool for creating multiple batch runs of a network for analysis purposes. Students will learn how to use Processor configuring the software to automatically generate a wealth of output statistics and post simulation analysis. Session 13: Data Analysis. In this session students will learn how to use Paramics Analyser to compare, combine, and manipulate data and create detailed reports. Session 14: Demand Profiles, Time Periods, and Multi-matrices. Paramics models can contain time specific data allowing the user a great deal of freedom in modeling networks scenarios that change over time. Students will learn how to apply demand profiles and multiple matrices allowing them greater control over the loading of traffic demand onto the network. Session 15: Presentation. Realistic 3D presentations can be used to convey results to a non technical audience. Students will learn how to assign life like 3D models to vehicles and place stationary models throughout the network. Bonus topics covered in this section will include movie storyboarding and real time movie capture. Course Outline - Day 3 Session 16: Public Transit. In this session students will become proficient in the application of the Public Transit components of a Paramics model. Students will learn about PT vehicles, stopping points, routes, schedules/services times, and passenger boarding/alighting profiles. Session 17: Car Parks (Parking Lots). Car Parks can be used to model multiple parking destinations for a single trip destination. When combined with variable message signs (VMS) car parks become even more powerful allowing for real time re-routing. Students will learn how to effectively utilise both car parks and VMS re-routing in an urban network scenario. Session 18: Exercises. Concluding the three day course a range of interactive exercises will allow students to apply the new skills they have gained improving learning and building confidence.
