SPECIFICATION FOR PRESSURE VESSEL PLATES, CARBON STEEL, MANGANESE-TITANIUM FOR GLASS OR DIFFUSED METALLIC COATINGS
SA-562/SA-562M
(Identical with ASTM Specication A 562/A 562M-90.)

1.

Scope

1.1 This specication covers titanium-bearing carbon steel plates intended for welded glass lined pressure vessels or other applications where the presence of free-iron carbide would be deleterious to the coating. A minimum specic ratio of titanium to carbon is specied. 1.2 The maximum thickness of plates is limited to 2 in. [50 mm]. 1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specication.

3.2 Specication A 20/A 20M also establishes the rules for the ordering information which should be complied with when purchasing material to this specication. 3.3 In addition to the basic requirements of this specication, certain supplementary requirements are available when additional control, testing, or examination is required to meet end use requirements. These include: 3.3.1 Vacuum treatment. 3.3.2 Additional or special tension testing. 3.3.3 Impact testing. 3.3.4 Nondestructive examination. 3.4 The purchaser is referred to the listed supplementary requirements in this specication and to the detailed requirements in Specication A 20/A 20M. 3.5 If the requirements of this specication are in conict with the requirements of Specication A 20/A 20M, the requirements of this specication shall prevail.

General Requirements and Ordering Information

5.

Heat Treatment

3.1 Material supplied to this material specication shall conform to Specication A 20/A 20M. These requirements outline the testing and retesting methods and procedures, permissible variations in dimensions, and mass, quality and repair of defects, marking, loading, etc.

5.1 Plates shall be thermally treated to produce grain renement, either by normalizing or heating uniformly for hot forming at a minimum temperature of 1600F [870C] or some higher agreed temperature, and held at this temperature for a minimum of 1 h/in. [2.4 min/mm] of thickness.
