The Architecture of Deconstructivism

by przyjacielewarszawy on August 23rd, 2011 Ideas and moods of every age are reflected in painting, art and philosophy many times they interpenetrate, which can be observed most clearly in what we can see on everyday basis, i.e. in architecture. The body of Zlota 44, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is referring to the leading movement in the architecture of our times Deconstructivism. The very idea of Deconstructivism is steming from Jacques Derridas philosophy and is also called Deconstruction. An attempt to free architecture from stiff principles of Modernism is the keynote underlying the principles of Deconstructivism, including the main one, forms follows function, best illustrated by Daniel Libeskinds famous sentence uttered while designing the Jewish Museum in Berlin - Toilets wont be the most important thing in this building. Some distinctive features of the architecture of this movement are, among others, the idea of fragmentation and the so-called controlled chaos, untypical ideas concerning surfaces or roofing of buildings, curvilinear shapes which are supposed to disturb and displace such elements of the building like its body or frame construction. Deconstruction is also an architecture of emotions; its representatives searched for inspiration in every field of widely comprehended art, finding it in the music, in poems, in painting or simply in the surrounding world. The inspiration for Zlota 44 was, among others, the music of Chopin and the poetry of Polish Noble prizewinners Wisawa Szymborska and Czesaw Miosz. Apart from Libeskind, among representatives of Deconstructivism there can be named are such architects like: Rem Koolhaas, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid and Frank O. Gehry. As a matter of fact, Deconstructivism started to be an official movement since the time of these authors collaborative exhibition organised in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1988. On account of building designs which often make an impression of being unrealistic, deconstructivists are called starchitects (architect dreamers, star architects).

For them, the building is supposed above all to express the idea, the concept and the thought of the author, thus pushing the functionality off to the background, and instead of decorating the building with ornaments, they follow the idea that it is the building that should decorate the space. The nickname star also results from the fact of a huge popularity of these authors worldwide and recognition for their contribution to the development of contemporary architecture. There are many examples of deconstructivist architecture, the most interesting ones, apart from numerous projects of the author of the Glass Sail, are the following: Frank O. Gehrys Vitra Design Museum, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Zaha Hadids Lilium Tower, Petera Eisenmans City of Culture of Galicia or the building of the Public Library in Seattle designed by Rem Koolhaas. Over the years, majority of starchitects dissociated from Deconstructivism, however, many ideas of this movement are still continued in designs of contemporary buildings. Although the body of Zlota 44 enraptures with its innovative approach to architecture, certainly it isnt possible to accuse it of lack of functionality.
