The Shamong Home and
School Association tapped into its
inner Santa Claus a little early
this year, and both Indian Mills
Elementary and Indian Mills Me-
morial School are happy to re-
ceive.
The HSA presented the 16
teacher requests it was able to fill
with items ranging from paints to
an iPad totaling $18,979.69. HSA
president Barbara Weir said the
group is happy to provide the
service.
Were a fundraising organiza-
tion that tries to purchase the
items that arent in the schools
budget, Weir said. When there
have been curriculum changes in
the past, weve been able to step in
and purchase things teachers
need when the budget doesnt
have room to allow it.
This year, the HSA has funded

re-elected;
tax rate is
extended
Election day in Shamong did
not bring too much excitement on
the local front as both incumbent
committee members Tim Gimbel
and Michael Di Croce easily won
re-election to their two seats as no
Democratic nominations were
made.
Also on the ballot was whether
to continue the current open
space tax rate of two cents per
$100 of assessed property value.
Voters agreed to extend the two-
cent rate another 10 years until
the end of 2025.

the third and fourth grade Study
Island program and the purchase
of classroom trade books to sup-
port guided reading and balanced
literacy. The amounts of the indi-
vidual HSA grants ranged from
$4,223.64 for a study group pro-
gram at IMMS, to $48.33 for
frames for Choice Awards. Other
major grants were $2,230.15 for
second-grade mentor texts,
$2,126.72 for kindergarten reading
and language arts and $1,794.63
for a third-grade readers work-
shop. Other awards included
$696.77 for a recess equipment
cart, $604.76 for a fourth-grade
weekly newspaper, and $249 for
News Currents Online and
Non-Fiction Read to Know for
students in grades four through
eight. The HSA also granted
teacher Cathy Campeau $626 for
an iPad, and $289.93 to an art
teacher for paint. The Shamong
Foundation for Educational Ex-
cellence donated $1,375 for a cart
to hold Chromebooks for use in
first and second grades. The
fundraisers the group holds
throughout the year are vital in
allowing it to give back to the
schools.
We host a lot of family-friend-
ly events. We hosted a Halloween
party that was open to students
and their entire family. Well be
hosting a soccer tournament in
the spring that will allow people of
any skill level to join and have a
good time, Weir said.
Teachers put together a list of
requests for the HSA before the
school year and present it to the
group. The association then meets
to decide what requests it will be
able to grant.
Its a cool relationship. They
thank us in person, give us thank
you cards. Were just happy to be
able to help them, Weir said.
The benefits of their generosity
are felt beyond just the teachers.
Students and parents also reach
out to the HSA and thank them for
providing what they do.
Its a very cyclical relation-
ship. The things we provide go to
the teachers, but they ultimately
are helping the students, which
makes them happy. If the students
are happy, then the parents are
happy and on down the line,
Weir said. Its great to see the
money we raise and the items we
purchase go right back to the kids
and the support of their educa-
tion.

Veterans invited to ceremony
Burlington County Freeholder
director Joe Donnelly announced
that 200 military veterans have
been invited to participate in the
Burlington County Military Serv-
ice Medal Ceremony on Thurs-
day, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Coun-
tys Human Services Facility, 795
Woodlane Road in Westampton.
This is an important event
that recognizes county residents
who have served in the U.S.
Armed Forces and has not yet re-
ceived their county medal, Don-
nelly said. Approximately 10,000
County Service Medals have been
awarded since the program began
in 2002, but we continue to identi-
fy and reach out to those who
have not been honored.
With thousands of Veteran Ad-
ministration programs and bene-
fits available to veterans, the Divi-
sion of Military and Veterans
Services aids residents in acquir-
ing assistance and benefits such
as pensions, education, job search
support, unemployment, Depend-
ent Indemnity Compensation, VA
Health Care, VA Home Loans, vo-
cational rehabilitation, and dis-
ability compensation and sur-
vivor benefits.
Requirements for receiving a
medal are current residency in
the county and having been hon-
orably discharged from U.S. mili-
tary service. Veterans must regis-
ter and be approved to receive a
medal through the County De-
partment of Military and Veter-
ans Services.

The Sun
While its ratings may not match that of
Keeping up with the Kardashians or
Duck Dynasty, Lenape District Televi-
sions venture into the world of reality tele-
vision continued with the second season of
We Teach.
We Teach features educators from
Seneca, Lenape, Cherokee and Shawnee
high schools. The series follows teachers
throughout their day with a focus on what
it takes mentally, physically and emotional-
ly to engage and captivate students in the
classroom, on stage or on the field and pre-
pare them for success beyond high school.
The idea started when someone chal-
lenged former LRHSD superintendent
Emily Capella that teachers dont actually
work all that hard, LDTV staff member
Becky Potter said. She wanted to show
people just how much work a teacher is re-
sponsible for every day. In addition to
teaching the curriculum, teachers also
serve as coaches, advisors and mentors for
numerous after-school and extra-curricu-
lar activities.
The series takes a new approach to reali-
ty TV by spotlighting an educational envi-
ronment that hopefully encourages stu-
dents to grow and learn as well as push
them toward excellence. We Teach hopes
to give viewers an inside look at what it
takes to be a teacher who positively im-
pacts the lives of students.
The technicians ride in the cars with
the teachers in the morning on their way
to work, Potter said. They have discus-
sions with the teachers about what they
are thinking and how they think the day is
going to go. They are with them as they
teach all day until they return home at
night.
The show is filmed by LDTV staff and
sponsored by Metlife Resources-John A.
Costello, a certified financial planner. The
program highlights teachers from a vari-
ety of departments so different curricu-
lums and challenges can be featured.
Half of a teachers day makes up an
episode. Thats how much content there is.
Its our only programming that students
arent able to participate in as they would
need to be out of class literally all day, Pot-
ter said.
LDTV first began broadcasting in 1992,
allowing students to learn television pro-
E
very year, on Nov. 11, our coun-
try celebrates Veterans Day.
America has been honoring its
veterans around this date, in some
fashion, by some name, since 1919
the one-year anniversary of the
armistice of World War I, then known
as The Great War.
Fighting stopped between the Allied
nations and Germany on the 11th hour
of the 11th day of the 11th month in
1918. President Woodrow Wilson pro-
claimed Nov. 11 as the first commemo-
ration of Armistice Day a year later.
In 1938, the government passed an
act that made Nov. 11 an official holi-
day dedicated to the cause of world
peace and to be thereafter celebrated
and known as Armistice Day. In 1954,
after World War II and the Korean
War, Congress revised the act, replac-
ing the word Armistice with the
word Veterans.
The remembrance shifted to Oct. 25
in 1971 after some governmental con-
fusion, but was returned officially to
Nov. 11 by President Gerald Ford in
1975.
The name and date of what is now
known as Veterans Day may have
changed in the 94 years since the first
celebration, but the spirit has not.
Veterans Day commemorations are
held throughout the country, and our
local region does an excellent job of
paying homage to the servicemen and
servicewomen who have served, and
are still serving, to protect our free-
doms.
These men and women of the
Armed Forces past and present risk
their lives, day in and day out, so that
we can live the lives we enjoy today in
America. They risk their lives, day in
and day out, so that we can live better
lives in the future. They risk their
lives, day in and day out, so that people
around the world can hopefully live a
life that is free like ours.
Fighting for freedom is not always a
popular choice, and it may be debat-
able, at times, whether its even the
right choice. But that does not, and
should not, take away from the people
who serve to protect our country.
Hopefully, you commemorated Vet-
erans Day in some fashion. And hope-
fully, youll continue to honor our vet-
erans throughout the year.
Honor our veterans
With Veterans Day over, our support for those who serve should not stop
Your thoughts
How did you commemorate Veterans
Day this year? How can we continue to
honor the servicemen and service-
women throughout the year?

Three years after its launch,
the Lenape Regional High School
Districts DEFY the Issue cam-
paign presents former NBA star
Chris Herren, national speaker
and author of Basketball
Junkie to talk to the districts
students.
Herren will share with stu-
dents the compelling and unvar-
nished story of his struggles with
substance abuse and his journey
to sobriety during presentations
in November and December at
each of the districts four high
schools.
In addition, Herren will give a
presentation geared specifically
for all parents of LRHSD students
at the Lenape Regional Perform-
ing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Mon-
day, Nov. 18.
Herren, a basketball legend
from Fall River, Mass., realized
his dream to play for the NBA,
only to lose it all to addiction. He
has been drug- and alcohol-free
since Aug. 1, 2008.
In 2009, he launched Hoop
Dreams, a basketball player devel-
opment company and, in 2011, he
founded The Herren Project, a
non-profit foundation that assists
individuals and families strug-
gling with addiction.
According to Superintendent of
Schools Carol Birnbohm, bring-
ing Herren to the district gives
students and parents a rare oppor-
tunity to hear a first-person ac-
count of how substance abuse and
addiction can destroy the dreams
of someone who is gifted, talented
and intelligent.
Substance abuse is a serious
threat in any community and to
any type of student, including the
typical happy, well-adjusted, ac-
tive high achiever, Birnbohm
said.
Research studies by organiza-
tions including the National Insti-
tutes of Health and the National
Center on Addiction and Sub-
stance Abuse have found that sub-
stance abuse is a serious and
growing problem among teens, in-
cluding the use of prescription
drugs and pain relievers in addi-
tion to illegal drugs and alcohol.
A new trend known as Academic
Doping, the abuse of prescription
stimulants by high achieving stu-
dents, has surged nationwide over
the past two years.
Equally important, research
continues to show those teens
whose parents talk to them regu-
larly about the dangers of drugs
are 42 percent less likely to use
drugs than those whose parents
dont. However, only a quarter of
teens report having those conver-
sations.
We want every Lenape Region-
al District student and their par-
ents to hear Chris Herrens mes-
sage and have those conversations
with their children, Birnbohm
said. As a parent, Ill be at the
Nov. 18th presentation and en-
courage every parent to join me

to learn are incredible. We get so
many nice emails after they grad-

of their time with LDTV.
