Stakeholders

*People living near forests (MPBs have increased the risk of big forest firessee effect of MPBs) *The logging industry *Animals living in affected areas *Provincial and federal parks boards *Everyone, because trees release carbon dio ide !hen they die, contributing to global !arming Parts of a tree "#ro!n$the top of the tree made of leaves and branches "%eaves$use photosynthesis to create food for the tree& %eaves take energy from the sun to turn carbon dio ide and !ater into sugars for the tree and o ygen "'ap!ood$youngest layer of !ood, !hich brings !ater to the branches "(eart!ood$the inner core of the dead !ood, supporting the tree& As the tree ages, the 'ap!ood turns into (eart!ood "#ambium$a t!o cell thick gro!ing layer& #ambium makes trunks, branches and roots gro! larger

Effect of MPBs
Because mountain pine beetles are overpopulated, it can lead to many different ecological problems, like having too many dead and dry trees !ill increase the chances of large forest fires& )t can also change the !ater tables in areas that !ere affected by MPBs& The larvae eat their !ay out of the tree, !hich cuts off the flo! of !ater and food the tree needs& Signs of MPB attack "There !ill be holes throughout the tree, from adults leaving the tree "The needles !ill first turn yello!, then red and then they fade and become gray "*or self"defense, the tree releases blobs of creamy resin (looks like crystalli+ed honey, to get rid of the MPBs

My Recommendation
My long"term solution for getting rid of the MPB is; people should manufacture fake pine trees to trap the MPBs& 3hen a MPB finds a tree they like, they send off a chemical scent to alert other MPBs that they2ve found a good tree& -nce the tree has enough MPBs it can trap all of them, and blast ice and sno! at the MPBs, killing them& My short"term solution for handling MPBs problem is for forest fires to be lit !here the MPB invasions are the most severe, !hich !ill kill any MPBs inside the inner bark (MPB habitat& By doing this !e !ould also kill their larva& The fires !ould have to be started in early 4une or larva !ill almost be fully developed into adults !ho could fly a!ay&

Mountain Pine Beetles

They may be the si+e of a grain of rice, but mountain pine beetles are the biggest pest threat to forestry& )t needs to be 69/# f/r at least a !eek to kill the mountain pine beetle, and because of global !arming, MPBs survive the !arm !inters& )n .//0, there !ere very strong !inds that ble! over millions of adult MPBs from B# to Alberta& Also, in .//:, even more MPBs !ere blo!n over the 1ocky Mountains& The MPB life cycle normally takes a year, but sometimes, due to bad !eather it takes t!o (e&g& rainy summers,& *emale MPBs normally lay around 9/ to 8/ eggs in galleries, !hich are long tunnels inside a tree&

Overview of the Situation

-ver the past years (since .//0,, the mountain pine beetle population has rapidly increased, mainly because of global !arming& Mountain pine beetles (MPBs, are miniature bugs that mainly feed on %odgepole Pine trees, but are capable of attacking all species of pines& 1ecently, they2ve also been eating 3hitebark, Ponderosa, 'cotch, %imber and 4ack pines& 3hen the population !as smaller, they only fed on stressed, over 5/ year old trees6mostly %odgepole pines, but no! that they2re overpopulated they2ll attack any tree over 7.&8 centimeters in diameter& Mountain pine beetles kill trees by leaving blue"stain fungus on the tree !hen they eat it& That combined !ith their larvae eating the tree2s inner bark is ho! the tree gets killed&

Human Use of forests

People use trees in numerous !ays, if you place the trees around your house properly, they can reduce air conditioning usage by </=& Trees are also useful for furniture and paper >ust like they !ere used historically& 3hen a tree around ?/ years old dies, they release < tons of carbon dio ide into the atmosphere, and !ith fe!er trees there is less o ygen created& Another thing that !as also used historically is climbing trees, and some people have s!ings attached to the trees in their front yard&
