The t-shirt as a canvas

fter years of doing design work and production at my

parents screen printing shop, I was in need of a shirt to match
some new shoes. I decided to just make one. My first shirt was a
simple design with the slogan It aint easy bein Cheezy. I wore it
mostly as a joke, but after several friends requested one for themselves, I realized perhaps there was a bigger opportunity.
My initial attempts to start a company were juvenile and involved
no business strategy. The first designs were mostly an expression
of myself. I would later try to incorporate a message into each
design while also experimenting with the human face and the
emotion it could evoke. I took pride in doing everything myself,
but would later learn this was not an efficient or sustainable
way to do business.
After deciding to pursue a professional basketball career in
Europe, I no longer had the ability to take Jay Cheezy Clothing
further. I did however continue to explore t-shirt design. With my
most recent work I have tried to expand the design size and possible printing surface. This has proven challenging but compelling
given that I must deal with the constraints of a four color
press on a 15 palette.

y current start-up opportunity is ReadAround, a location-based knowledge-sharing platform. The initial concept started as a school project with my co-founder Maria, but we have since
added some team members with technical backgrounds to help us
make ReadAround a reality.
With ReadAround, we want to help others understand the world
they live in through the combined shared knowledge of a community of storytellers, historians, and people who have a passion for
finding the best experiences their local environment has to offer.
Besides design, ReadAround has also allowed me to explore the
fields of storytelling and typography. My responsibilies include site
design, copywriting, and brand strategy. Although I dont claim to
be an expert in any of these domains, the opportunity to practice
them has surely been a valuable learning experience.
The next year should be an interesting exploration in the business
creation process. My goals are to become more knowledgable
about network effects and platform economics in order to
increase our chances of success.

Stories are one of the tools we use to make sense of the world around us.
Ancient societies were formed around shared values and beliefs, which
were passed along with use of stories. These stories helped people
understand the world they inhabited, as well as the social norms within
their society.
Maps are another tool we use to discover and navigate our surroundings.
Maps not only show geography, but also allow information within
physical spaces to be represented. In the past, only experts were able to
construct maps, but technology has now enabled everyday users to
contribute their knowledge.
Today we live in a world full of stories. Our stories bring meaning to the
places we inhabit. By mapping these stories, we help others to
understand that each physical location is marked by many differing
as well as the world we live in.
