3D Tsai-Wu

Criterion
Comparison of Failure Criteria
Following conclusions are obtained:
Necessity of a 3D failure analysis is
obvious.
Puck criterion is upper hand due to
its ability to distinguish between
fracture modes, the physical
background it relies on and more
realistic failure condition calculation.
Prior to a failure analysis, a detailed
parameter study with the support of
experimental data is necessary.
Finally, failure analysis of a pressure
bulkhead is performed considering
above inferences.
Tsai-Wu Failure Criterion
It is a practically simple failure
criterion which takes interaction of
stresses in different directions into
account by making use of strength
tensors. It is considerably cheaper in
computational effort compared to
Puck criterion especially in 3D stress
states. A drawback of this criterion is
that it is based on von Mises criterion
which is more suitable for ductile
materials. 2D and 3D formulations are
implemented into Carat++. As it can
not distinguish between different
fracture modes, Tsai-Wu Criterion
returns one failure index for
corresponding failure analysis.
Comparative Study of Puck and Tsai-Wu Failure Criteria:
A Finite Element Approach
Puck Failure Criterion
It is based on Mohrs fracture
hypothesis which is appropriate for
brittle fracture behaviour of composite
materials. It can distinguish between
fibre fracture and different inter-fibre
fracture. Both 2D and 3D formulations
are implemented into Carat++.
Available fracture modes for 2D Puck
Criterion are:
Fibre Fracture (FF)
Inter Fibre Fracture Mode A (IFF A)
Inter Fibre Fracture Mode B (IFF B)
Inter Fibre Fracture Mode C (IFF C)
Available fracture modes for 3D Puck
Criterion are:
Fibre Fracture (FF)
Inter Fibre Fracture (IFF)

Composites materials had been in use for thousands of years even at the first stages of humanity. In the last decades, the need for lighter and stronger
materials provoke the usage of composite materials. Particularly, fibre reinforced composites are preferable in lightweight applications due to their high
strength/weight ratio, easy manipulation of desired material properties under design restrictions and their wide range of versatility in choice of compound
materials. Lately with the availability of experiments and newly emerging fracture hypotheses, predictability of FRP composites behaviour is risen.
Moreover, with the advancing technology, vast computational power is achieved. As a result, prior to manufacturing, importance and availability of
analyses of the structures are increasing. This gives the motivation to compare and reveal the differences between existing failure criteria for FRPC
materials. In this study, Puck and Tsai-Wu failure criteria are chosen for comparison after an implementation in Carat++.
