National Service Scheme IIT Delhi October 2013 Updates

Past Events:
1.InternationalDayofGirlChildCelebration(Oct10&11):
Purpose: To sensitize the people in IITD about the significance of girl child and to celebrate the InternationaldayofGirlChild(IDoGC)(declaredbyUnitedNationsGeneralAssembly). 1.1.PosterMakingatVidya(October10): Purpose: To involve the kids at our Vidya Teaching Project inthecelebration of Internationaldayof GirlChildasapartofoneoftheirextracurricularactivity Activities:PostermakingsessionwasheldonthethemeofIDoGC.

1.2.BethereasonforaSmile!(October10):
Purpose:ToinvolvethevolunteersinthecelebrationofIDoGC. Activities: Preparationofposters,cards,giftsandwritingofpoemsonsimilartheme. These cards and gift were displayed throughout the nextdayatWINDT and were finallydistributed tothekidsatMunirka. 3. Posters,cardsandtoyswerealsodisplayedinfrontofexhall. Problemsfaced:Only1012volunteersappeared,whichwasbitlesserthantheexpectedcount. 1.3.Bringingasmile(October11): Purpose:TocelebrateIDoGCwiththekidsatMunirkaandgivethemthesignificanceoftheday. Activities: The cards and gifts prepared the previous day were taken along with some volunteers and distributed to the kids there, and as the name suggests "BRINGING A SMILE", we finally broughtthesmile. Problemsfaced:Novolunteersturnedupontheirown,weneededtocallthem. 1. 2.

1.4.MovieScreeningcumDiscussionSession(October11)
Purpose:TosensitizethepeopleonthethemeofIDoGC. Activities:Screeningof"BuddhaCollapsedOutofShame"followedbydiscussion. Problems faced: Due to late classes of freshers and extended weekend, the participation was a littlelow. Linkforpictures:LINK1LINK2 Expenses:Rs.1950

2.WorldHospiceandPalliativeCareDay(October12):
Purpose: To celebrate the true spirit of palliative careand spread awarenessinsidetheIIT community aboutthemeaningofpalliation,itsaimanditsscope. Activities:Aseriesofeventswereorganised

Lecture session on palliative care and importance of world hospice and palliative care day by Dr. SushmaBhatnagar(I/cPalliativecareAIIMS). 2. ATrainingandfacilitationsessionwasorganisedbyDNipCareforregularvolunteers. 3. AlargeDNipCarevolunteeringtripwasorganisedtoDSCI(DelhiStateCancerinstitute). Success: 1. Itwassuccessfulintermsofspreadingawarenessaboutthissocialactivity. 2. The events were really able to motivate the regular volunteers and they will now to be able to contributeinamoreeffectivemanner. Problemsfaced:Attendancewasalittlelowinlecturesession. Expenses:AroundRs.1000asthetravellingexpensestoDSCI.

3.MovieScreening:AnInconvenientTruth(October16):
Purpose: To provide an interactive medium of sensitizing people about the consequences of global warming. Success: 1. An Inconvenient Truth is an award winning movie with some scientifically powerful factsmixed with impressivespeechofAlgore.Itmainlyrelateshumanactivitieswiththeirimpactonmotherearth. 2. Screening of this movie lead to some deep discussion among the students and we sincerelyhope forthebettermentofhabitsofpeoplethroughthis. ProblemsFaced:Asitwasaholiday,itwasalittledifficulttogetthekeytotheroom.

4.NSSeventsinRendezvous(October1821):
4.1.PuppetWorkshopforKids(October20): Agenda:Toprovideaplatformforrecreationalactivities Success:Theprogramconsistedoftwosessionspuppetshowontrafficrules&puppetmaking. 1. Thekidslearntaboutthegeneraltrafficrulesthroughthepuppetshow. 2. The other halfofthesessiondemonstrated team working andcreativity bythekids whilemaking the puppet. 3. The responseofchildren (atotal number of 56) from AINA, Vidya and Munirka TeachingProject was overwhelming. ProblemsFaced: 1. ManagingalargenumberofkidswasquitedifficultforRendezvousvolunteers. 2. A big turnout led to lack ofresources for making the puppets whichwaslater overcame but led to delayinthesession. 4.2.WorkshoponHealth&Hygiene(October20): Agenda:Toteachkidsaboutbasichygieneinaninteractiveandfunway Success: The program comprised of 3 sessions feature film session, puzzle session, and Tshirt paintingcompetitionorganisedbySmilyo. 1. Kidslearntforthehygieneanditsimpactontheirhealthviaanimatedvideos. 2. This was followed by Quiz session where kids answeredabout theirdaily habits relatedtohygiene. Some of them already follow good hygiene habits while rest decided to followthenonwards.Italso includeddistributinggiftstothechildren. 3. KidspaintedTshirtsonthetopicoffestivalwiththevolunteersofSmilyo. ProblemsFaced: 1. Thedelayinworkshopasaresultofthepreviousworkshopmadeafewkidsrestlessinitially. 2. Also,astheeventstartedalittlelate,kidsreachedlatetotheirhomesfromthescheduledtime.

4.3Goonjstall(October1921): Success: 1.Stallbygoonjngowasputupandithadagoodresponsefromthepeople. 2.Itwasthereforthe3daysoffest.Thegoonjpeoplewereprovidedthestallbytherendezvouspeople. ProblemsFaced: 1.Initiallytheareaallottedtothemwastoosmallbutfinallytheyweregivenadifferentareawhereallthe arrangementswerethenmade.Ittooksometime. 2.Therewasalackofcoordinationfromtherendezvouspeople.

The Social Innovation Cell of NSS IITD released some of its problem statements as winter projects for IIT Delhi students. 2.DrainageMasterPlan:NameandLogoDesignCompetition:
Purpose: TodecidethenameandthelogofortheofficialwebsiteandappoftheDrainageMasterPlan ProblemsFaced: AverageParticipationduetoaclashwithRendezvousandongoingexamsinothercolleges. Success: Competition helped in achieving the initial publicity andrecognition needed. Facebook page created forthesamereached300+likesinashortspanoftime.

3.SubstanceAbuseSurvey:
Purpose: After consultation with Mrs. Rupa Murghai, the SCS Counsellor, smoking was identified asatopic of concern especially with regards to health of the studentsand as a topicon which there was little tonodata. Ananonymoussurveytoanalysethehabitsofsmokersinthecampuswasmadeandcirculated. Success: 200responsesreceivedinitially,seeingwhichthesurveywasrecirculated. Strengthofsurveyresponseis500nowwithafairlyevenlydistributedresponseacrossallbatches. Projectiscurrentlyindatacompilationstage.WeplantopublishresultsinInstituteforumssoon.

Updates on Ongoing Volunteering Opportunities


1.MunirkaTeachingProject:
Purpose: Teaching kids in the Munirka area in Delhi basic health practices, education and engagingthemin extracurricularactivitiesfromtimetotimethattheyotherwisewouldntbeableto. Problemsfaced: Teachingkidsasawholeistoughtask.Problemsrelatedtobacklogofkids, Success: Currentlyatanaverageof20kidspersession. ExtraCurricularsessionsconductedeachweekend. Kids have been divided into groups according to their level and assigned a mentor responsible for callingthemandteachingthem. Thevolunteershavespokenwiththeparents,toinvolvethemandkeepthemmotivated. Asmallcleanlinessandplantationdrivewasconductedintheteachingsite.
