The ponderous size of the quarterback obstructed the view of the petite student that sat behind him. 4. People who rather have things sugarcoated, tend to be offended by Elises veracious nature. 5. Purpose for Reading: To recognize Hawthornes allegory pay attention to the way he describes characters and look for the instructive (didactic) purpose. During Reading: 1. Hawthorne makes it clear that each character represents a particular human vice or weakness. Identify what each character represents.

2. What details describing the doctors study suggest the supernatural? 3. What is the story behind the painting in Dr. Heideggers study? What does the painting and its story suggest about Dr. Heideggers motivations for his experiments?

4. At the storys end, have the guests learned anything from the experience? How do you know?

5. What does the doctor prove during his experiment and what has he learned?

6. An archetype is an original or fundamental imaginative pattern-it could be a character, a story plot, a setting, or an object. Archetypes appear across cultures and have been repeated through the ages. How does Hawthornes use of archetype reveal his views on human nature?

After Reading: (A) When Dr. Heidegger kisses the withered rose, he says, I love it as well thus. What does he mean? How does this statement connect with the moral lesson of the allegory?
