1 Components of Deen
There are three components of the Deen Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0001: One day we were sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes, his hair extraordinarily black. There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last he sat with the Apostle (peace be upon him) He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs and said: Muhammad, inform me about al-Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the journey. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: It amazed us that he would put the question and then he would himself verify the truth. He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He (the inquirer) again said: Inform me about al-Ihsan (performance of good deeds). He (the Holy Prophet) said: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you. He (the enquirer) again said: Inform me about the hour (of the Doom). He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring (about it). He (the inquirer) said: Tell me some of its indications. He (the Holy Prophet) said: That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and master, that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-herds vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings. He (the narrator, Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: Then he (the inquirer) went on his way but I stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for a long while. He then, said to me: Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instruct you in matters of religion.

2 Belief in the Jinn

2.1 Obligatory
Denying is considered Kufr by consensus of the scholars. Sahih International: Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Quran. [ Surah al-Jin 72, Ayat 1 ]

2.2 Linguistic Definition of Jinn

Sahih International: O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe. [ Surah al-Araf 7, Ayat 27 ]

2.3 Technical Definition

They are accountable beings with free will. Allah created them from fire and they are invisible to humans. They have special abilities, unlike those of humans. Muhsin Khan: And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. [ Surah al-Hijr 15, Ayat 27 ] Sahih International: And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire. [ Surah ar-Rahman 55, Ayat 15 ]

2.4 Are Jinns Visible to Human ?

Muhsin Khan: O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya' (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not. [ Surah al-Araf 7, Ayat 27 ]

4|Page

2.5 Position of Other Faiths 2.6 Pagan Arabs

Sahih International: And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment]. [ Surah as-Saffat 37, Ayat 158 ] Sahih International: But they have attributed to Allah partners - the jinn, while He has created them and have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Exalted is He and high above what they describe. [ Surah al-Anam 6, Ayat 100 ]

2.7 Judaism
o Some modern sects deny the existence of jinn. o Most sources say that they exist and created from fire.

2.8 Christianity
o Iblees has a personal army of demons to assist him in attacking humans. o Consider Iblees to be a fallen angel. o Generally jinn were also fallen angels. o Modern Christianity doesnt believe in jinn, but they believe in demons as bad angels.

2.9 Wisdom of Creating Jinns

Sahih International: And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. [ Surah adDhariyat 51, Ayat 56 ] Sahih International: "O company of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, relating to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "We bear witness against ourselves"; and the worldly life had deluded them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. [ Surah al-Anam 6, Ayat 130 ]

2.10

Ash-Shaytan (Satan)

He is Ibless, the Great Taaghoot, and the Enemy of Mankind He is one of the Jinn o Surah al-Kahf 18, Ayat 50 Muhsin Khan: And (remember) when We said to the angels; "Prostrate to Adam." So they prostrated except Iblis (Satan). He was one of the jinns; he disobeyed the Command of his Lord. Will you then take him (Iblis) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zalimun (polytheists, and wrongdoers, etc). Sahih International: And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. Is Iblees the father of all Jinn ? o This is more so the opinion of the scholars but not defined / mentioned / clarified by the Prophet (saw). o Surah al-Kahf 18, Ayat 50 Muhsin Khan: And (remember) when We said to the angels; "Prostrate to Adam." So they prostrated except Iblis (Satan). Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. o Sheikh Ibn Taymiah mentions that Iblees is the father of all jinn. o He was given the shape of an angel due to his excellent worship to Allah SWT. When he disbelieved he was changed back to his original or worsened shape, no more like an angel. o He has horns, and his face looks like an ugly fruit from the bottom of the hellfire. Describing the tree in hellfire, Allah SWT says Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire, The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils) [ Surah As-Saffat 37, Ayat 64-65 ]

3 Wisdom behind creating ash-Shaytan

1) Struggling with ash-Shaytan and his allies is a manifestation of completing ones servitude to Allah 2) Fearing sin 3) A lesson 4) A test 5) A manifestation of Allahs complete power 6) Approaching the opposite 7) Trial is a path to gratitude 8) Many more acts of worship made possible 9) The appearance of many of Allahs signs and miracles 10) Creation from fire is a sign in itself 11) Manifestation of Allahs Names & Attributes 12) Demonstrating Allahs Complete Control & Ownership 13) Manifestation of Allahs complete Wisdom 14) Praising Allah for suppressing the Shaytan 15) Showing His Patience & Mercy

3.1 Qareen
Abd-Allaah ibn Masood narrated: The Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said: There is no one among you but a companion from among the jinn has been assigned to him. They said, Even you, O Messenger of Allaah? He said, Even me, but Allaah helped me with him and he became Muslim (or: and I am safe from him), so he only enjoins me to do that which is good. [ Muslim ] According to another report, There is assigned to him a companion from among the jinn and a companion from among the angels. [Saheeh Muslim ] And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. this Quran and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan devil) to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him. [ Surah Az-Zukhruf 43, Ayat 36] Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in his wakefulness, and Satan cannot imitate me in shape." Abu 'Abdullah said, "Ibn Sirin said, 'Only if he sees the Prophet in his (real) shape.'" [ Saheeh al-Bukhari ]

3.2 Ash-Shaytan :: The Enemy of Man

Sahih International: Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze. [ Surah Fatir 35, Ayat 6 ] Sahih International: [Iblees] said, "Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy his descendants, except for a few." [Allah] said, "Go, for whoever of them follows you, indeed Hell will be the recompense of you an ample recompense. And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion. [ Surah al-Isra 17, Ayat 62 - 64 ] Sahih International: [Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]." [ Surah al-A'raf 7, Ayat 16 17 ]

3.3 Shaytans Interest

1) Husband & Wife 2) Parents & Children 3) Hoax :: Actions that are worthless and yet appears fantastic 4) False promise 5) Makes wrong look right 6) Create interesting arguments 7) Haram seen as Halal 8) Sibling rivalry 9) Anger 10) Constant seeking of pleasure a. Prophet (saw) said that it will to the extent that we will forget to cry 11) Secrecy 12) Suspicion

NOTE :: Shaytan nourishes the weakness in us to the point it overwhelms our common sense.

4 Characteristics of Jinn
4.1.1 Jinn :: Good & Evil

Sahih International: And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways. [ Surah al-Jinn 72, Ayat 11 ] Sahih International: And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim those have sought out the right course. But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.' [ Surah al-Jinn 72, Ayat 14 - 15 ]

4.1.2

Life of the Jin

Narrated: Abdullah bin Umar :: Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Abu Bakr ibn Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When you eat, eat with your right hand and drink with your right hand. shaytan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand." [ Imam Malik's Muwatta ] Ibn Mas`ud reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: There came to me an inviter on behalf of the Jinn and I went along with him and recited to them the Quran. He (the narrator) said: The Prophet then went along with us and showed us their traces and traces of their embers. The Jinn asked the Prophet about their provision and he said: Every bone on which the name of Allah is recited is your provision. The time it will fall in your hand it would be covered with flesh, and (you can have) all the droppings as food for your animals. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, So do not use (these things) for cleaning yourselves (after relieving oneself), for they are the food and provision of your brothers (Jinn). [ Muslim ]

4.1.3

Jinn & Marriage

Sahih International: In them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinn [ Surah ar-Rahman 55, Ayat 56 ] Sahih International: And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. [ Surah al-Kahf 18, Ayat 50 ]

11 | P a g e

4.1.3.1 Can Humans & Jinn Inter-Marry ?

4.1.3.1.1Contradictory Opinions
Ibn Taymiyyah says that it is well know that men and Jinn can intermarry and have children. Al-Imam as-Suyootee also mentions many stories. Al-Imam Malik and other Muslim jurists accepted the possibility of a human make marrying a female of the Jin, but rejected the opposite. Other jurists rejected the possibility of either.

4.1.3.1.2Clear Proof
Sahih International: And Allah has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve? [ Surah an-Nahl 16, Ayat 72 ] Sahih International: And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. [ Surah ar-Rum 30, Ayat 21 ]

12 | P a g e

4.1.4

Dwelling places of Jinn

Jinn share the earth with us Throne of Iblees is at sea o It was narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: The throne of Iblees is on the sea and he sends out his troops to spread mischief (fitnah) among the people. The greatest of them in his sight is the one who causes the most fitnah. [ Saheeh Muslim, They mostly live in impure places such as :: o Dumpsters o Bathrooms o Abandoned places i.e. graveyards The Shayateen mostly gather in markets and trail of camels o If you can, do not be the first one to enter the marketplace. And do not be the last to leave it. For they are the places of Satan and therein he raises his banner. [ Sahih They spread at the time of sunset and often sit between shade & light o Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:533, Narrated Jabi bin 'Abdullah :: The Prophet said, "Cover your utensils and tie your water skins, and close your doors and keep your children close to you at night, as the Jinns spread out at such time and snatch things away. When you go to bed, put out your lights, for the mischief-doer (i.e. the rat) may drag away the wick of the candle and burn the dwellers of the house." Ata said, "The devils." (instead of the Jinns). The Shayateen will not enter a house where the name of Allah was mentioned upon entering. o If the man enters his house and mentions the name of Allah upon entering it and upon eating therein, Satan says, There is no lodging for you here and no meal here. But if the man enters his house and neglects to mention the name of Allah upon entering it, Satan says, I have found lodging for you. And if he does not mention Allahs name upon eating his meal, Satan says, I have found lodging and a meal. [ Saheeh Muslim, They run away from homes where Surah al-Baqarah is recited, where Allahs Name is often mentioned o Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said, Do not turn your houses into graves. Shaitan is barred from any house in which Surat alBaqarah (2) is recited. [ Muslim ] When they hear the adhan they run away o Narrated Abu Huraira: Allahs Apostle said, When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed. [ Bukhari ]
Musnad Imam ahmad ] Muslim ] Ahmad ]

13 | P a g e

In Ramadan, the Shayateen are chained o The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist. And Allah has those whom He frees from the Fire, and that happens every night. [ at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah and Ibn Khuzaymah - Classed as Hasan by Sh al-Albaani in Sahih alJaami, 759 ]

4.1.4.1 Jinns Die Sahih International: Everyone upon the earth will perish, [ Surah ar-Rahman 55, Ayat 26 ] Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet used to say, I seek refuge (with YOU) by Your Izzat, None has the right to be worshipped but You Who does not die while the jinns and the human beings die. [ Bukhari 4.1.4.2 Food of Jinn o Sahih International: And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion. [ Surah al-Isra 17, Ayat 64 ] o It is recorded from Ibn Masud that a messenger from the jinn came to the Prophet (SAW) and he went with them. The Prophet (SAW) read to them some verses. The Prophet (SAW) showed the people the remains of their embers. They asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about their provisions and he told them, .Every bone on which the name of Allah has been mentioned will have meat on it for you. And the dung are fodder for your animals.. [ Saheeh alMuslim ]

o Camels are made of Shaytan / Jinn :: Sahih Muslim 3/332 #450 o Abu Thalabah al-Khushani said: The Messenger of Allaah said: The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey. [ Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Mishkaat
(2/1206, no. 4148): al-Tahhaawi and Abul-Shaykh reported it with a saheeh isnaad ]

4.1.5

Weakness of Jinn

4.1.5.1 No power over Righteous Muslim Sahih International: Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs. [ Surah al-Isra 17, Ayat 65 ] 14 | P a g e

Sahih International: And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian. [ Surah Saba' 34, Ayat 21 ] 4.1.5.2 Limited Power Sahih International: And the devils have not brought the revelation down. It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able. Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed. [ Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26, Ayat Sahih International: Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants." [ Surah al-Isra
17, Ayat 88 ]

210 - 212 ]

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in his wakefulness, and Satan cannot imitate me in shape." Abu 'Abdullah said, "Ibn Sirin said, 'Only if he sees the Prophet in his (real) shape.'" [ Saheeh al-Bukhari ]

4.1.5.3 Limited to this Universe Sahih International: So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny ? We will attend to you, O prominent beings. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny ? O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah]. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny ? There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves. [ Surah ar-Rahman Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: The Prophet said, Cover your utensils and tie your water skins, and close your doors and keep your children close to you at night, as the jinns spread out at such time and snatch things away. When you go to bed, put out your lights, for the mischief-doer (i.e. the rat) may drag away the wick of the candle and burn the dwellers of the house. Ata said, The devils. (instead of the jinns). [ Bukhari ] Hadith - Muwatta, 49.21 :: ...Shaytan does not open a locked door or untie a tied knot, or uncover a vessel.

55, Ayat 33 - 35 ]

4.1.6

Abilities of Jinn

4.1.6.1 Whispers Bukhari and Muslim report that once when the Prophet was in seclusion (I'tikaf) in the mosque, his wife Safiyyah went to see him. When she left, the Prophet accompanied her to his house. On the way he met two Companions from Ansar who were passing by. They sped up their pace when they saw him. He called them and said, "This is my wife Safiyyah bint Huyai. They said, "Subhan Allah! O Messenger of Allah, why are you saying this?" The Prophet said, "Satan flows inside man like blood. I feared, may be he put bad thoughts about me in your minds." 4.1.6.2 Speed Sahih International: A powerful one from among the jinn said, I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy. Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you. And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous. [ Surah anSahih International: And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames. And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him. [ Surah al-Jinn 72, Ayat 8 - 9 ] 4.1.6.3 Transformation They cannot transform in front of us Jinn can transform into the shape of humans and animals, especially those which are black o Abu Thalabah al-Khushani said: The Messenger of Allaah said: The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey. [ Shaykh al-Albaani Jinn often enter houses in the shape of snakes. o Three types of snakes that the jinn wont take form are rattle snake, cobra, and a bald snake. Prophet (saw) made an exception regarding the bald snake with two spots above its eyes. This type of snake should be killed immediately. [ Bukhari ] o A Muslim should follow the following etiquettes :: Do not rush to kill a snake that is found in your home Command the snake to leave the house After three, it can be killed 16 | P a g e
said in al-Mishkaat (2/1206, no. 4148): al-Tahhaawi and Abul-Shaykh reported it with a saheeh isnaad ]

Naml 27, Ayat 39 - 40 ]

Hadith - Sunan of Abu Dawood, Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri :: Muhammad ibn AbuYahya said that his father told that he and his companion went to AbuSa'id al-Khudri to pay a sick visit to him. He said: Then we came out from him and met a companion of ours who wanted to go to him. We went ahead and sat in the mosque. He then came back and told us that he heard AbuSa'id al-Khudri say: The Apostle of Allah said: Some snakes are jinn; so when anyone sees one of them in his house, he should give it a warning three times. If it return (after that), he should kill it, for it is a devil.

4.1.7

Possession

4.1.7.1 Can Jinn possess Humans ? Ibn Taymiyyah said , The entering of Jinn into the body of humans is a well-established fact by the agreement of the Imams of Ahl As-Sunnah wal- Jamaah. Sahih International: Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. [ Surah al-Baqarah 2, Ayat 275 ] Bukhari and Muslim report that once when the Prophet was in seclusion (I'tikaf) in the mosque, his wife Safiyyah went to see him. I feared, may be he put bad thoughts about me in your minds."

4.1.7.2 Why do Jinn possess Humans ?
