Smoothing Polylines
Dear Forum, I GPSed the location of about six miles of logging roads. I imported the lines from my GPS into AutoCAD 2008. Since the GPS takes points every couple meters and the accuracy varies over time the roads appear convoluted and contorted when you zoom in far enough. What is the simplest way to smooth these polylines? Thank You

it's not as easy as doing a REGEN or REDRAW is it?

Life doesn't suck, although we all go through periods when it may be easier to think that, than to discern the solution to whatever problem is the most formidable at the moment in one's personal UCS. Go to PLAN view instead. - Dadgad

REGEN and REDRAW don't seem to have any effect. I played around with PEDIT -> SPLINE and it helped a little but didn't really smooth the lines to the degree I was looking for. I tried changing the spline settings but none of them seemed to have a significant effect. Any advice on how to make the SPLINE more dramatic? Any other smoothing options? I would do it in ArcMap but for some reason the student copy I have says that smooth is "disabled in arcView" and will not let me access the tool (under "advanced editing") Thank You

However you smooth the polyline, it will use all of the GPS points (all 5000 of them). What you need to do is to "weed" out some of the vertices, then when you curve fit, the shape will not be too jagged

Thank you all for your help. I guess I will have to manually erase some of the vertices that are far from the center of the road. This seems very time intensive and if any one can think of a faster way please let me know! Maybe I can sort the points by accuracy and remove points beyond a certain threshold. Next time I am in the field I will reduce the logging distance! Thank You.
