A Missive from the District Chair

Dear Esteemed Sponsors, Thespians, Parents, and Guests, What a whirlwind this fall has been! I love a good challenge, and stepping into the role of District Chair has proven to be one of the greatest professional challenges of my career. I have been to Thespian District and State Festivals countless times over the years first as a student, and later as a co-sponsor. However, I have never attended as a District Chair, until now. ! This job is HUGE! There are many people that I must thank. First and foremost, I must thank my work partner, my right hand, and our wonderful District V Secretary, Ms. Laura Copenhaver! This festival simply would not have happened without her. A tremendous thank you goes to Mr. Jeff Williams for not only hosting, but for being a fabulous coconspirator in this wonderful journey. Thank you to Mrs. Melaney Douglass for coordinating all of our judges, to Ms. Karen Rugerio for all of the expertise, and to Mr. James Brendlinger, the District III Chair, for being my mentor throughout this process. Thank you to all of the sponsors, parents, and businesses who have contributed to this beautiful festival. I must thank my beautiful family for loving the arts and forgiving the long hours I spent away from them in preparation for this. I hope you will all help me in sharing much gratitude to the students of troupe 5115 for their countless hours of preparation and their dedication to making this the best festival yet! And finally, my unwavering love and admiration goes out to the students in my troupe 7434, many of whom helped me charter this troupe five years ago. Special thanks go out to the students in my Comp. Theatre class, led by our Senior Rep. Kira Alqueza and our Junior Rep. Daniela Martinez. No one will truly ever know all these students did to make this weekend happen, but it is because of them that this all could happen. I am the luckiest woman in the world to go to work each day to be with young people as passionate, talented, loving, and hard working as them! In closing, I leave you with this. Earlier this fall, our State Chair, Daron Hawkins passed away at age 38. He was too young to die and he has left a huge hole in many hearts. The lesson to be learned here is this live each day as if it is your last, and always tell your loved ones how you feel about them. Mr. Hawkins believed very passionately in Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. I hope you will join us in our commitment to this fabulous organization! It has truly been an honor serving as your District Chair and I look forward to continuing in my duties on behalf of all Thespians in District V. Remember our motto, Act well your part; there all the honor lies. Humbly Yours, Mrs. Gail Chase

1:15 1:55 | Troupe 850 | The Imaginary Invalid *L
Laugh along with a crotchety hypochondriac and his wacky cohorts in this French neo-classic comedy. It will leave sides, spleen, and liver in stitches; with clysters and physic to patch it up! This play is asterisked for classical offensive language and fart sound effects.

2:10 2:50 |Troupe 7059 | The Glass Menagerie

The play is introduced to the audience by Tom, the narrator and protagonist, as a memory play based on his recollection of his mother Amanda and his sister Laura. Amanda's husband abandoned the family long ago. Although a survivor and a pragmatist, the sometimes voluble Amanda yearns for the comforts and admiration she remembers from her days as a fted Southern belle. She worries especially about the future of her daughter Laura, a young woman with a limp and tremulous insecurity about the outside world. Tom works in a shoe warehouse doing his best to support them. He chafes under the banality and boredom of everyday life and struggles to write, while spending much of his spare time going to the movies or so he says at all hours of the night.

3:05 3:45 | Troupe 592 | Almost, Maine *SA, D, S

In the fictional town of Almost, Maine there are real people encountering love in magical ways. Some are discovering, some denying, some pretending, and some falling, but theyre all dealing with love and the magic that comes with it.

4:00-4:40 | Troupe 7475 | A Funeral for Mittens *L, D, R

In the game of love, you must fake it a little, or at least thats the advice Dan gives Max after his hysterical girlfriend, Carolyn, hits a dog with her car. 6:15-6:55 | Troupe 1983 | A Broken Promise *L, SA, S, V, R, D, P
