QB Reminders vs.

York Catholic Fighting Irish (Week

1)
1. Do things right. Play smart. Play with POISE and CONFIDENCE. GET BETTER EVERY
WEEK!
2. Work to make us better on each play. PROTECT THE BALL!!!
3. HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY - Call the right plays. Know your personnel. Be vocal.
4. Don’t play conservative, LAY IT ON THE LINE and don’t be afraid of mistakes!!! FULL
SPEED!!!
5. Mental preparation! Review your game plan. STAY FOCUSED!
6. Be LEADERS, take control of the huddle. BE POSITIVE, STAY POSITIVE, AND THINK
POSITIVE.
7. Get first downs. Move the chains.
8. Put POINTS on the board. Get us into scoring position.
9. Know why the play is being called! WHAT DO WE NEED, WHY DID THIS PLAY GET
CALLED?
10. Stay calm and patient, BIG PLAYS will come!

Protection:
1. See the defense & Set the protection. (What front is it?) EVEN? ODD? HOW MANY SAFETIES? SLIDE
PRO or THROW HOT.
2. Use “SCAT” call with an Empty set, or when both or one back(s) will be releasing (ex. Banana or
Ricky/Leroy).
3. Vs. a 30 Front where the defense is showing multiple blitzers w/ a LB on the line: make
a ROGER or LOUIE call!!! Very Important!!!!
4. RB will protect to the side you call (Roger – he will go Right & Louie – he will go Left)…
5. If they blitz, don’t panic, just know your HOT READS!!! Get rid of the ball quick release…
6. If you see a 30-look – CALL BASE & TELL THE RB(s) to “SCAN”. (also use this vs. a safe-30 look)
7. Point the back even when the line is blocking BASE… UTILIZE THE BACKS – EASY THROWS =
BIG YARDS

Pocket Movements:
1. Don’t watch the rush. Get the ball to the open man.
2. Don’t throw off your back foot if you can help it, move your feet and find a lane. Stay on top of the
throw.
3. Hang tough in the pocket! O-Line will do a very good job; have confidence in them and the RBs.
4. Step up in the pocket, avoid the rush, make good decisions under pressure and then
they will stop coming after us.
5. Move your feet and get the plays executed.
6. Carry out all play fakes! Especially on NAKEDS – get a good mesh and GOOD DEPTH.
7. Stretch the ball back in the run game; give the RB an advantage of seeing how the defense moves.
8. Speed up your drops and your reads – GET THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD!!!
9. Utilize “PISTOL”. If you need to go under center, take the CENTER and let him know you
are UNDER!

Execution:
1. Throw effectively. Don’t pass up the easy throws; take what the “D” gives you! Find
the open receiver.
2. WE WANT THE EASIEST THROW! Look for the highest percentage throw!
3. Don’t EVER force the ball downfield. But don’t take sacks either, get rid of the ball, throw it in
the STANDS if necessary.
4. Live for the next down. Protect our opportunities on OFFENSE. If you need to throw it away – then
do it.
5. Get the ball to our guys on screens, “USE T-O-U-C-H”! Find a LANE.
6. See the match-ups on defense, see the whole field! WHERE CAN YOU HURT THEM?
7. Work to get the corner on SPRINT OUT (DASH). Throw smoothly on the run…. Follow the throw…
Get the corner. BUBBLE BACK out of GUN.
8. Eliminate mistakes, execute the plays crisply. No Mental Errors!
9. Don’t take ANY throws for granted, follow through – stay with your mechanics!
10. Throw the ball effectively in the flats. Throw with authority. Don’t forget the swing routes.
(BANANA/SHOOTER)
11. On deep throws, make sure you give the WR a chance to make a play on the ball. Put
Air under it.
12. Be alert for back-shoulder throws. Use ADJUSTMENT vs. a corner that runs over top the
FADE. Corners & safeties will try and play overtop of us to stop our deep balls, use the back-
shoulder throw when applicable. ON ADJUSTMENTS: see the corner’s numbers… If the corner takes
off – throw it behind him – TRUST IT!
13. Move your feet in the run game. Stay on the midline for inside zone plays and get the ball
stretched back to them on outside zone plays. Allow our backs to see the defense and cut. Don’t
be in the way!!!
14. Look the defense off… don’t stare down receivers… see how they are reacting to your EYES!
15. THROW TO THE OPEN MAN – READ THE DEFENSE!!! DON’T PRE-DERTIMINE – READ (PRE-SNAP
READ)!!!

Audible/Checks:
1. Check “NOW” whenever we can, control the LBs, TO A SLOT OR SINGLE RECEIVER.
2. In a 3x1, the ball goes to the MIDDLE GUY on a check to “NOW”.
3. Fade checks, hook & hitch checks. Be aware of the “EASY” throws.
4. Be vocal when we go “ATTACK”!!! Use patience and authority. This allows us to control the tempo of
the game.
5. Short Yardage Checks – be sure you get the first down!!!
6. “Noodle” vs. Run Checks – how many guys are in the box? Can you throw NOW? If you
can’t throw “NOODLE” then run the ball…

Overall:
1. Take advantage of the opportunity you have to play. Not many people have the opportunity to play
this game! You do!
2. Whoever is in the game, do your best … STAY ALERT!
3. You are an extension of the coaches on the field! Stay POSITIVE! The team in the huddle will react
to you!
4. We need to make our plays and offense work each week!!! PROTECT THE BALL!!!
5. Bounce back vs. any adversity you may face over the course of the game!
6. Play hard, strong and intelligent until the final whistle blows!
7. Win game #1 vs. York Catholic! (REMEMBER WHERE YOU ARE PLAYING!)

Winning Attitude in Sports

In sport, at elite or amateur level the difference between those athletes that actually have the ability
to win, and those that just think that they have the ability to win is largely down to mental preparation
and mental toughness. Most if not all sportsmen and women agree that a large part of their success is
determined by what they think, whether it is in training or in competition. The aim of sport psychology
is to give you the skills to control what goes on inside your head (your thoughts and emotions), so that
you can perform at your best even, when the pressure is on.

York Catholic football faces season of change

A new classification for District 3 playoff purposes.

Some new players, too. Sophomores moving up from last year's ninth-grade team, and freshmen, five of whom will play on the varsity this year.

Change will be as much a part of the York Catholic football program in 2008 as two-a-days in training camp and Friday night home games.

The Fighting Irish, who opened practice for a new season on Monday afternoon, will compete in Division III of the York-Adams League for the first time.

A league realignment, based on enrollment, forced York Catholic to switch places with Littlestown. The Fighting Irish went from Division II to III, and
Littlestown changed from Division III to II.

At the same time, York Catholic elected to compete for a District 3 playoff spot as a Class A school. The Fighting Irish previously agreed to play AA so
they could remain part of Division II.

In Division III, York Catholic will match up against schools with smaller enrollments than ones in Division II. The Fighting Irish split four cross-over
games against Division III foes last season, losing to Delone Catholic and Biglerville and defeating Fairfield and York Tech.

"Single-A, that's where our numbers are," York Catholic head coach J.D. Martin said. "We're not even close to being a Double-A school. Being Single-A,
our kids have a postseason goal (to qualify for districts)."

Martin, beginning his fourth season, thinks his team has the potential to make an immediate impact in its new surroundings.

"I would say we're a veteran team, especially with the guys up front (offensive and defensive linemen). On defense, we have two-thirds of our
secondary back, along with both inside linebackers, both defensive tackles and one defensive end."

York Catholic finished with a 4-6 record last year, but the Fighting Irish are setting their sights a lot higher this year.

"We have a good core group of players," said Nick Lupinetti, a 6-1, 218-pound center/defensive end. Lupinetti is one of 18 seniors on the roster. "We
have a lot of veterans, and a lot of youth, but some of the new sophomores are ready to play. This is a team that can make a statement."

Lupinetti will be playing alongside another senior, Brandon March, a 6-2, 260-pound defensive tackle/offensive guard.

"We're looking to begin building a program, (that can consistently compete in Division III)" March said. "And we definitely have high hopes for this
season."
