The Social Network!

Narrative: The most unique feature of The Social Network is that it constantly switches between the three timelines in which the lm is set.! 1.Harvard University Fall 2003.! 2.Court Case with The Wienklevosses.! 3.Court case with Eduardo Saverin.!

1. 2. 3.
Representation: ! Sexism in one of theme the lm touches upon. There are very few women in the lm that arent drugged-up, drunk, partying groupies. The rst one we meet is Marks soon-to-be ex-girlfriend Erica. She is a smart, pretty girl who calls Mark an asshole and storms out of the bar. The second one we meet is Marylin Delpy, a kind and attractive lawyer who is attending the court hearings for Mark. In the nal scene, before she leaves the room, she says to Mark, Youre not an asshole, youre just trying to be. Every other girl in the lm is portrayed as a sex-crazed, partying teen looking to lock lips with a successful guy. Clearly, the lm constructs a statement about how were becoming a mans world once again. The revolutionary sphere of the internet is created and controlled b men. Digg, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google were all founded by men. I dont think that Aaron Sorkin or David Fincher are sexist, but rather capturing life in the internet-business right now which is predominantly a mans world.!

Cinematography:! The scenes ow smoothly from one scenario to another, seamlessly moving from the present where the depositions are taking place, to the past which describes Mark Zuckerbergs account of the story. Lighting enhanced the lm in certain spots. The chaotic

light in the club scene made Sean Parkers words seem sinister; especially the lighting from below the characters face and its red colour.!

The low light combined with re in the bedroom scene with Eduardo and Christy was dramatic. The intimate light in the opening scene between Zuckerberg and his girlfriend implied a closeness between characters, even though, towards the end of the scene, they begin to fall apart.!

Editing:! Not only does the lm jump between timelines, within those timelines the lm continuously switches between to scenes that are occurring simultaneously. A good example of this is one of the rst scene when a college party is occurring at the same time as Mark is hacking. The music between the two scenes is continuous- a sound bridge that creates the affect that the two scenes are happening simultaneously.! Most of the shots during the party scene is panning or tracking shots, giving the sense of chaos and activity. Meanwhile, the shots of Mark hacking are all still and mainly close ups, suggesting the Marks intense concentration on his activity at the time (hacking).!

Special Effects:! The Social Network doesnt have a large amount of special effects, except for one unique and impressive effect. The Winklevoss twins (Tyler and Cameron) are both played by Armie Hammer. They used a combination of split-screen effects and digital face replacement to create this magical effect. Fincher thought that Hammer looked the most like the real brothers, so for some scenes, the visual effects team photographed Hammer speaking Tyler's lines and created a computer-generated model of his face to paste over Josh Pence's face- the actor who played the other brother.
