Film Premieres In

Equal parts travelogue, cul-
tural history, and environmental
parable, People of a Feather com-
bines breathtaking imagery with
heartwarming characters to tell
the story of a peoples connection
with nature, and their struggle
to adapt to climate change. Te
West Kootenay EcoSociety will
be bringing the flm to the Civic
Teatre on Wednesday, Novem-
ber 20 for its Kootenay premiere.
Te flm was shot over seven
winters in an Inuit community on
the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay.
What began as an academic research
project for Dr. Joel Heath evolved
into an evocative portrait of an Inuit
community faced with an array
of changes. In People of a Feather,
Heath chronicles the communitys
integration of traditional and mod-
ern lifestyles, and he documents
how climate change undermines the
communitys very survival.
On its surface, the flm re-
volves around the relationship
between the Sankiluaq commun-
ity and the Eider duck, on which
the Inuit depend for food and

Christmas By Te Lake
Te seventh annual Christmas by the Lake, from Fri-
day, December 6 to Sunday, December 8 is guaranteed to
get you in a festive mood. Indeed, there is no other event
that can ofer such a wonderful fun-packed weekend with
something to entertain all family members, from the very
young to the merely young at heart.
Te sparkling-lit Christmas Village, stands before the
historic Silverton Gallery creating a unique, magical world
of European yuletide cheer. Enjoy roasting bannock and
chestnuts over the open fres and the evocative aromas of
traditional Christmas cuisine as you wander through the
village. Tere will be plenty of choice when it comes to
food and drink to savour, ranging from numerous delica-
cies such as Gluehwein, bratwurst, crpes, soup, European
Stollen and more. Within the gallery itself there will be
over 30 local artisans ofering an appealing range of quality
Christmas gifs for friends and family.
Happily, two of the most popular attractions will be re-
turning this year. Celebrated Peter Vogelaar, who will be
sculpting his magnifcent, legendary ice slide, and the pro-
fessional glass blower, Dan Farden from Ourglass Studio,
Nelson. You can also watch other traditional craf artists at
work. New this year is Patrick McIvor from Dancing Scot
Forge. He is a traditional blacksmith and will demonstrate
his skills on Saturday and Sunday.
Of course Santa will be taking a break from his busy
schedule to visit Christmas by the Lake and will arrive on
Saturday at noon to have his picture taken with the many
children who will be there. Te Grinch and Gingerbread
Man will also be visiting, and by popular demand, the
Christmas card workshop is back. Other childrens at-
tractions include a contest to
win a Nikon Coolpix Digital
Camera (contestants must be
16 years and under). Te chal-
lenge will be to locate a sub-
ject, depicted on the contest
form, somewhere within the
festival grounds.
Te splendid entertainment
will begin with the Fireside
Choir on Friday evening sing-
ing traditional carols. On Sat-
urday, the Slocan Valley Com-
munity Band starts the music
of at 2 pm, followed by Feli-
city Gerwing and the Mental
Health Club of Slocan at 3 pm
and local musicians Leah Main
and Michael Dorsey at 4 pm.
Te celebrated Lucerne School
Kids Choir sings at 11:30 am,
followed by Hank Hastings
and his accordion at noon. An-
other highlight on Sunday is
Melissa McCready & Shannon
Moldenhauer (Mots and Oats)
who will be performing at 1 pm.
Te festivities begin Friday
at 4 pm, followed by the light-
ing of the Christmas Village
and the tolling of the bell at
5 pm when the New Denver
Royalty will launch Christmas
by the Lake. Bring the family

man Christmas market or

connection with nature, and how that has evolved over time.
In the second half of the flm, we see how the pace of climate
change in the Arctic where the impacts are greater and are
compounded by the hydroelectric industry has outstripped
this deeply adaptive communitys ability to react to change.
Te story resonates today, even though flming started in
2004. Within the last year, First Nations and their supporters
have resisted impacts to their land and practices in New Bruns-
wick, along the Enbridge Pipeline, at Jumbo Valley, and at Perrys
Ridge in the Slocan Valley. Without being heavy-handed, the
flm presents a gentle parable of what can happen when the ties
between a community and its environment are severed. Wheth-
er you interpret the flm as a morality play, a work of anthropol-
ogy, or as a visually-stunning chronicle of natures mysteries, its
worth seeing. Dr. Heaths personal investment comes through
in his richly painted portrait of the people and place. His time-
lapse monitoring technology and underwater camera system
earned him a well-deserved place in the BBCs Planet Earth ser-
ies, as he recorded the worlds frst images of eider ducks feeding
under the Arctic ice. People of a Feather screens at 7:30 pm on
Wednesday, November 20 at the Nelson Civic Teatre. Tickets
are $10 for the general public, or $8 for students, seniors, and

Can you move with your child after youve
split from your ex?
Say you and your ex are guardians with an
agreement or court order about parenting
arrangements or contact, but now you want
to move. Maybe you want to move from
Nelson to Vancouver, or even Toronto, for
a better job or because youre getting mar-
ried to someone who lives there.
You hope to make a better life for yourself
and your child. But moving will also likely
signifcantly aIIect your child`s relationship
with your ex or other people important in
your childs life.
If your ex agrees, you can go ahead with
the move.
But what if he or she doesnt agree? BCs
new Family Law Act (which came into ef-
fect on March 18, 2013) has rules that apply.
In most cases, you now have to notify your
ex and any other person with contact (de-
fned in the new rules), in writing, oI the pro-
posed move at least 60 days ahead of time.
To encourage out-of-court solutions, all of
you have to use best efforts to cooperate to
resolve any issues the relocation poses. If
you can sort this out before the date of your
planned relocation, your move can go ahead.
But your ex, as the other guardian, can ap-
ply to court within 30 days after your writ-
ten notice to prevent the move.
If you end up in court, somewhat different
rules come into play, depending on whether
or not you and your ex have substantially
equal parenting time (i.e. share parental
responsibilities pretty much equally).
Basically, if you mostly carried the load
and your child has mostly lived with you
post-split, your chances of being allowed
to move are greater if your proposed
move is in good faith, and youve come
up with reasonable arrangements to pre-
serve your exs relationship with your
child. Unless your ex can show that the
move wouldnt be in your childs best in-
terests, the new rules then presume your
child would be better off moving with
you. But theres no such presumption if
you and your ex had substantially equal
parenting time.
The new rules introduce a whole new vo-
cabulary to try and make sorting out family
disputes, including relocation cases, less
hostile like guardian and parenting ar-
rangement and contact (rather than who
gets custody and access, which implies a
winner and a loser). Whats in the childs
best interests continues to be the key factor
in deciding these types of cases.
Its important to know that the new rules
dont apply to federal Divorce Act pro-
ceedings, arrangements or orders for cus-
tody and access (the terms used there). Any
move with your child involving a change
of those custody and access arrangements
would need court approval, which would
be decided under that law.
The circumstances of individual relocation
cases vary widely. They tend to be diIfcult,
emotional cases, and the outcome is often
hard to predict. Only some highlights of
the new rules are touched on here. If you,
or your ex, wants to move with your child,
seek legal help promptly.

It is with much love that we announce that Robert (Bob)
Ferguson Reid, 69, passed away peacefully on November 9
th
,
2013 at Mountain Lakes Senior Community in Nelson, British
Columbia. He was born on September 2
nd
1944 to William
Ferguson and Mary Leonna Reid in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
He was the youngest of 5 children.
Bob married the his girl Cinda, in 1967. Tey were blessed
with two sons Michael and Christopher. He flled his time with
great dedication to his family and his extended family of hockey
children, who afectionately still call him Coach. Calgary and
Denver is where he divided his working life, loving both countries
and creating lasting friendships. His forever heart home was in
Balfour where he spent all his childhood summers, returning in
2006 to spend the fnal years of his life.
He is survived by his wife Cinda, sons Michael (Kristine) of
Monticello, MN, Christopher (grandchildren Morrigan, Tyler
and Chloe) of Aurora, CO, and his sister Joan Vanhousen of
Calgary Alberta, along with numerous beloved cousins, nieces and
nephews who all enriched his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his father William, mother Leona,
infant brother William Ivan, and sisters Betty Herringshaw and
Shirley Magnusson. A memorial celebration of life will be held in
Balfour the fall of 2014, as per Bobs written wishes.
We wish to thank the staf at Mountain Lake, and Dr. Trevor
Janz. Tey nurtured us all through this journey, and we are
forever grateful for the love and care they gave. Tey all helped

Genetically Engineered Foods And
Human Health
Two renowned Canadian scientists, Drs Tierry Vrain
and Shiv Chopra, will be arriving in Nelson on December
6, as part of a cross-Canada speakers tour. Tey will an-
swer questions and concerns regarding genetically engin-
eered (GE, also called genetically modifed or GM) foods
and human health.
Te event, from 7-9 pm at the Nelson United Church,
602 Silica Street, is free to the public. It ofers an oppor-
tunity to learn from a genetic engineer what GMOs are,
and about safety testing from a former Health Canada sci-
entifc advisor. Earlier the same day, Drs Vrain and Cho-
pra will present in Castlegar at 12 noon at Selkirk College,
room K-11.
Vrain and Chopra will address the topic of GE foods
and human health from both a scientifc and a regulatory
perspective, and will suggest what can be done about it.
Dr. Tierry Vrain is a retired soil biologist and genetic
engineer who afer a 30 year career with Agriculture
Canada is now very worried about what GE technology
holds for our future. Dr. Shiv Chopra, a former Health
Canada senior scientifc advisor, who blew the whistle on
inadequate testing of Monsantos GE bovine growth hor-
mone (rBGH), will explain why he believes the regulatory
process can be compromised to serve corporate interests.

Loans Campaign
Raises More Tan $1.5M
Afer a month of campaigning, the Kootenay Co-op in
Nelson reached and then exceeded its goal of rais-
ing $1.5 million. Te fnal tally? More than $1,768,200 in
member loans for its new store, slated to open mid-2015
on the east end of Nelsons downtown core.
We are so completely delighted with the response from
our member-owners, says Board Director and Member
Loans Committee Chair Susan Morrison, Te response
from day one of the program was really positive; people ap-
preciated how the loans program was both a local, ethical
investment opportunity and a way to help the Co-op grow.
Tis success has implications beyond Nelson and area,
says Morrison. Te success of this campaign shines a
light on the region as a whole. To the best of our know-
ledge, this is the most money raised in a member-loans
campaign for food co-operatives in North America! Its
such a clear sign of how special this community is.
During the month of October, the Member Loans com-
mittee (a combination of staf, board directors and mem-
ber-volunteers) mailed letters, made phone calls, manned
a booth at the Co-op, spoke at events and ate, drank and
dreamt about member loans, says the loans program co-
ordinator Marya Skrypiczajko.
Te loan sizes ranged from $1000 to well over $25,000.
Member loans provide the Co-op with patient capital at
preferable rates, contributing signifcantly to a healthier
fnancial start for the new store.

about the way money can convey more than a market valua-
tion, says Morrison. Te dollar amount was one dimension
of the loan; the other was an expression of trust, enthusiasm
and good will from the lenders. It was a very meaningful
experience to interact with our members in this way.
Our lenders really refected the diversity amongst our
11,000 members, relates Skrypiczajko. We heard from
farmers who have supplied the Co-op for years to people
who have just moved to the area and who became mem-
bers only days before and everyone in between!
We are very grateful to all of our members for their par-
ticipation in this month-long campaign, says Morrison.
And for their membership and patronage of the Co-op,
regardless of whether they were able to make a loan at this
time or not. It takes a strong community to raise a Co-op!
Te board of directors will also be discussing the feed-
back which came from many members who are interest-
ed in future investment opportunities with the Kootenay
Co-op. We had a lot of people say they werent able to
participate now, but hope that we will ofer a similar
opportunity in the future. Tats something we defnitely
want to consider, says Morrsion.
As the member loans campaign comes to completion
the Nelson Commons project is preparing to kick in to
high gear. Pre-sales for the residential units will begin on
November 20th. While many people have pre-selected
units with the intention of purchasing, there are still units
available. Te public is invited to visit the Nelson Com-
mons show suite and sales of ce to view the 3D model
of the proposed development and to see the suite at 621

To Help Santas Post Of ce
Treat every day like Christmas, Teres room for
everyone on the Nice List and Te best way to spread
Christmas cheer is singing loudly for all to hear. Santas
Chief Postal Elf reminded all her crew new and old of
these rules just last week. Santas 9,000 postal elves have
their pens, pencils and mailbags ready to receive letters
from children all over the world.
Santas postal elves will help him answer more than one
million letters in more than 30 diferent languages, in-
cluding Braille. More than 21.8 million letters have been
received at Santas North Pole Post Of ce since 1982.
According to Santas CPE (Chief Postal Elf), Holly T.
Elf, there are three golden rules in sending a letter to
Santa:
1) Make sure you include your return address! While
Santa knows where you live, his postal elves need your
address to deliver Santas letter to your home. Afer all,
not everyone has access to Rudolph!
2) Send your letter soon! Already letters are arriving
from across the world and Santa is busy reading them
every night with Mrs. Claus. He encourages you to send
your letter soon to ensure hell have enough time to an-
swer each and every one of them. Letters must be mailed
by December 17 to allow enough time for travel to the
North Pole and back!
3) Remember Santas address: When your letter is
ready, drop it in a mailbox anywhere in Canada and the
postal elves will make sure it gets to the big man quickly.
Santa has a special arrangement with the post of ce and a
stamp is not required. But please remember any other let-
ter or card being sent to Grandma or anyone else needs a
stamp. Santas address is: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE,
H0H 0H0, CANADA.

Womens Centre Fundraising Event
Te Nelson and District Womens Centre (NDWC) is host-
ing their third annual fundraiser on Friday, November 29 at
the Prestige Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre. At the
Womagarium: Carnival of Wonders, guests will be transport-
ed back to the golden age of the travelling carnival and ex-
plore the mysteries of the imagination with some of the citys
fnest performers, a stellar silent auction, and other carnival-
esque fun with all proceeds going directly to supporting the
Nelson and District Womens Centre.
Step right up and be thrilled and amazed by the sights and
sounds of Lisel Forst, Bessie Wapp, Sydney Black and Clin-
ton Swanson, Krista Lynch, Slava Doval, Kindred Heart and
more! Learn the secrets of the future with fortune teller Mi-
chelle Mungall and the tarot readers, be adorned with hen-
na and facepaint, and fnd magnifcent treasures at the silent
auction. Dress the part in your fnest, most fantastical attire!
Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm at the Prestige
Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre, 701 Lakeside Drive
in Nelson. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and
also available at Mountain Baby, the Womens Centre and
Fairies Pyjamas. Te Nelson and District Womens Centre
has been a part of this community for over 40 years, mak-
ing it the longest running rural womens centre in Canada.
Te Womens Centre receives approximately 3,000 visits each
year. Without ongoing funding, it is the generous support of
the community that enables the Womens Centre to continue
to provides resources, referrals, and support for women to
become empowered in their own lives and engaged in their
