Join Fr. Matthew Pfeiffer Tuesday, November 26 at 5:15pm for an EXTRAORDINARY FORM MASS. Perhaps some of you remember growing up and participating at Mass prior to the Second Vatican Council reforms of the Mass. Since the Council, for the past 40 years we have grown accustomed to those reforms in how we worship. This has become the ordinary form of the Mass. Not ordinary as in usual or dull, but as in the normal way we celebrate. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI issued a Moto proprio (which is basically a legal letter) stating that the Roman Catholic Liturgy can be celebrated not only in the ordinary form but also in what is now referred to as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Extraordinary meaning different from or out-of-the-ordinary, not as in extra special or better. This Extraordinary Form is sometimes referred to as the Latin Mass or Traditional Mass or the Old Rite. These phrases are referring to the Mass celebrated according to the form which was in use for many centuries in our Church before the reforms of the Council. But the more appropriate term is Extraordinary Form. While there are external differences between the two forms, both give glory to God and make present the one Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. In their essence they share in the one sacrifice of Christ being offered to His Father and we are called to participate as fully as possible. In next weeks bulletin, I will review some of the differences and similarities between the two forms.
