Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Stewardship Homilies
Noon + November 16th/17th 5 pm and 8 am. As you have heard from Finance council members this past weekend at Masses, they have invited me to speak at the following masses. Pat, Brian and Lori did a wonderful job this past week in their reflection at Masses. What a witness! Thank you to Rick, our finance council chair who spoke at all masses the following weekend. A lot of work to prepare, prayer to inspire and witness to motivate! Please bring their reflections to prayer as you discern your weekly/monthly giving, ways that you will participate in the life of the parish and extra efforts in prayer to make this coming year 2014 a blest one for the parish! BRINGS MASS DESTRUCTION AND LOSS OF LIFE TO THE PHILIPPINES... 100% OF YOUR DONATIONS GO DIRECTLY TO THE VICTIMS OF TYPHOON HAIYAN Send tax deductible donations and make checks payable to: The Poor Household of God 546 Whittier Ave. Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 or donate at our website www.PoorHouseholdofGod.org
Sr. Clarissa is a member of a small, religious, missionary community in the Philippines named the Oikos Sisters. Inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi, they are committed to live a life of prayer, holiness and service to Gods very poor. They have been in existence for 15 years and are based in the Diocese of Borongan, Province of Eastern Samar, Philippines. The Oikos Sisters are dedicated to live their lives taking care of the poor as they live as one with the poor. At present they have three rescue homes for young women and children. The homes are quite basic but safe places of refuge for those in need. The Sisters live with the children they care for. They affectionately call the children the Oikos Angels. Their food and basic needs are obtained solely from donations. There are times when their cupboards are bare and they go hungry. Their homes are truly rescue homes as they serve young women and children who have suffered abuse, abandonment and deprivation. For them, OIKOS provides a Christian home, caring for all of their needs as they begin to heal from their physical and psychological wounds. n November 2010, the Oikos Sisters went beyond their walls of their mission homes to serve in three very poor upland villages. Feeding programs were started for malnourished children, free medications were given to those who were ill and vegetable gardens were started for each family. What is amazing is since their birth as a community, these Sisters remain completely dependent on the love and mercy of God through Divine Providence, trusting that HE will provide for them through the goodness and generosity of HIS people. I invite you to view the website that shows the work of the Oikos Sisters- www.PoorHouseholdofGod.org. The second collection today will be in support of the victims of the Typhoon Haiyan. Thank you for considering this request and Gods blessings to you and the parish of Christ the King. Mary Jane Trinkus, Sr Clarissa & Fr Peter Jarosz

True Hospitality: A Trademark of Christ the King Parish

How does one define handicap? According to the Free Online Dictionarys definition to be handicap is quite simply to have something that hampers or hinders. However, this standard does not come close to capturing the broad spectrum of what it means to be handicap. In order to be considered a disabled person in Illinois and qualify for a handicap parking permit one must fall into one of the five predetermined categories of disabilities, as stated by the Illinois Legal Aid. First is a physical disability including physical impairment of a permanent nature which significantly affects normal physical ability. Next is a developmental disability. A developmental disability is a disability that begins before the age of 18 including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and other related disorders. The third category is a visual disability which is the absence of vision or vision that is so poor that it inhibits tasks in which eyesight is necessary. Another disability includes a hearing deficiency that results in complete loss or hearing impairment that even with hearing aid is still reduced. The last category is a mental disability such as emotional or psychological impairment. Although these descriptions give a less vague idea of the definition of what it means to be handicap in a sense it makes the topic of handicap parking more difficult. Public parking facilities are required to have a certain number of handicap parking spots in relation to their number of total spots. The village of Lombard has issued Christ the King the appropriate number of spots. Although there is the correct amount of spots there has been a concern with priority. As a faith community it is our calling to help serve one another. For this reason we ask courtesy for those that are able to walk on their own, do not have a wheelchair or walker. Please allow the more severely handicapped and disabled to use the space. If you have had health issues in the past and were issued a handicap parking pass but are now able to walk the further distance please be considerate of individuals with oxygen tanks and walkers. Also when the new project was completed, we have a lower level circle drive for pick up and drop off, you can temporarily put on blinkers and bring your wheeled chaired or wakened family member into church, then return to your car and park. If needed there is a wheelchair that can be borrowed in the lower level and an usher can bring your loved one to the seat and you can meet them after parking car. There is also an elevator for use. Please help strengthen the hospitality of our faith community by parking in a spot other than handicap if you are capable of walking. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Blessings on those in our community who struggle to attend Mass. We will do our best to assist you. Fr. Jarosz and Administration Commission

Year of Faith: Catechism Corner

Gods free initiative demands mans free response, for God has created man in his image by conferring on him, along with freedom, the power to know him and love him. The soul only enters freely into the communion of love. God immediately touches and directly moves the heart of man. He has placed in man a longing for truth and goodness that only he can satisfy. The promises of eternal life respond, beyond all hope, to this desire. (CCC, n. 2002)

Dont Forget to Take the Diocese Pastoral Plan Survey

The Diocesan Pastoral Council, comprised of parishioners from across the Diocese of Joliet, is developing a comprehensive pastoral plan that will offer a roadmap for every parish to build community and to strengthen faith. A planning group within the Diocesan Pastoral Council is focusing on twelve key pastoral topics, but they need more input from all parishioners in the Diocese. An online survey has been set up at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ActionsIdeas to gather your suggestions. In addition, 90-minute group forums are being organized in churches around the Diocese to gather comments and suggestions through face-to-face settings. Upcoming forum times and locations can be found on the Diocesan Pastoral Council web page at http://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/pastoralcouncil/ but you can take the online survey now. Please participate in this endeavor to carry out the work that Christ has given to us as Catholic faithful. Let us go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.

JOIN OUR CELEBRATION We will be celebrating the 35 year anniversary of Deacon Wayne Storrs. The role of a Deacon is to serve, as he has one foot in the secular world and one in the priesthood due to his ordination in the Permanent Diaconate. Deacon Wayne has a love for people in need and has served at Christ the King in ministries such as PADS, visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and praying with the sick and dying. Deacon Wayne could have retired when he had a stroke in 2007. But he wanted to continue to serve in ways that he can and he greets us all with a smile. Plan to join your fellow parishioners as we honor Deacon Waynes service to the Lord and to Christ the King Parish. If you would like to help out in any way with the reception, contact Sharon Pierscionek at 630-268-8817 or sharonsbaskets@ameritech.net

40 Days For Life Results!

Approx. 540 people from the area who worship at over 55 faith communities joined us in completing 477 hours of prayer at our peaceful prayer vigil outside the nearest abortion facility! This prayer campaign brought Catholics, Jews, Evangelicals, Anglicans, Baptists, Nondenominational churches, Quakers, and Muslims to unite in prayer for an end to the tragedy of abortion in our community and across the globe. Due to our peaceful prayerful presence the facilitys business was considerably lessened! Thanks for joining us in this positive, necessary, interfaith prolife prayer campaign!

The Giving Tree

Our Giving tree will be set up in the Narthex for this weekend. Please consider taking a tag to help one of our worthy organizations. This year our giving benefits: St. Vincent DePaul & PADS Thank-you in advance for your generosity!

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic Community to the life of the parish family. To clearly state your catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptism or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptism and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. An active parishioner is involved in the life of the parish through at least one of the many ministries and services. A contributing member is one who uses their envelopes either manually or through electronic giving weekly or monthly. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Please complete all the necessary paper work if you would like to join our community. For information on when and where you can receive the appropriate documents to become a parish family member please call (630)629-1717x4

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

We would like to offer a hand crocheted or knitted prayer shawl, cape, or laprobe to anyone in the parish who needs to send one to a dear one struggling with life's loss or illness. The shawls are lovingly made so that your loved one may be wrapped with the all-encompassing love of Mary, the Mother of Mercy and Care; and God, the Father of Faithfulness, Healing, and Love. At our meetings on Wednesday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the East Room, we will support you through our prayers for restoring health and healing to your loved ones. In the church narthex, there will be a sign with instructions posted to request a prayer shawl. Bonnie Venezio's e-mail address is: rbvenezio@comcast.net and we will either e-mail or mail you a Request Form.

Fostering a Thankful Heart

Life is a gift. Every Day. Every Minute. Every Breath. Offering thanks for our many gifts not only honors God, but also reminds us of the source of our temporal and spiritual goods. We are all creatures of habit who at times take for granted the abundant blessings we have received. Yet we all like to be thanked when we are the giver. Think of a time when you sent a gift that went unacknowledged. You probably wondered whether the person received - or appreciated - the gift. For the Christian steward, thanksgiving occurs more than once a year in November. When we begin to realize the magnitude of the gifts God has entrusted to us, gratitude becomes a state of being, a response to our baptismal call, a grace from God. This week: Pray for the grace to live joyfully with a thankful heart.

ENVELOPE ETIQUETTE
Use your Sunday envelope. If for some reason
you are not receiving envelopes, please call the parish office. When you use these envelopes, you will receive an accurate statement for tax purposes. If you write one check for different funds (Sunday, Flower, Special Second collection), please mark the amount on each envelope and staple together with check on top. This is really helpful to the counting team who make the entries If you forgot your envelope and write a check in church, please indicate in the memo section which fund the check should go into: Sunday offering, flowers, debt reduction, etc.
