Exercise 02

Total Hours: 04 hrs

Study the V~I characteristics of diode.

Objective On the completion of this exercise you shall be able to Read the code printed on the diodes. Identify the type of package. Identify the diode terminals from the marking on them. Identify good/defected diodes. Requirements of Materials / Equipments Single strand wire - 20 cms Multimeter - 10 Nos/ batch Patch code - As required Bread Board -1 No / batch Semiconductor diodes, 1N4007or equivalent - 2 Nos /batch Power Supply (12v DC, 1Amp)

PROCEDURE TASK-1:- Identify Diode package and terminals. 1. Pick anyone diode from the given assorted. Record the code number printed on the diode in O & T sheet. 2. For the chosen diode, refer chart 1 of lesson 9.01 and identify and recorded the type of package. 3. For the chosen diode referring to Chart 1, identify and put a small red color sleeve over the anode terminal of the diode. 4. Repeat step 1 to 3 for at lest 5 diodes of different type s and get your work checked by your instructor. TASK- 2:-Checking diodes using ohmmeter / multimeter 1. Set the ohmmeter / Multimeter to X100 ohms range. Carry out resistance zero setting of the meter, 2. Pick up one of the identify diodes in Task 1. Connected the ohmmeter probes across the diode terminals as showing in fig 1a. Recorded the resistance reading shown by the meter in table of O & T sheet 3. Reverse the meter probes connected to the diodes as showing by the meter in the table. 4. From the reading noted in steps 2 and 3, Calculate and recorded the ratio between forward and reverse resistances. 5. From the recoded information given your conclusion about the condition of the diode. Use the type given below for making conclusion.

-In good diodes, resistance will be less than 100 ohms in one direction and very high or almost infinity / open in the other direction. In the worst cases the ratio between low to high resistance could be at least 1:1000

Figure 2.1 6. 7. Shorted diodes show Zero or very low resistances in both direction Open diodes shows infinity / open in both directions Repeat step 2 to 4 at lest ten more given diodes of different type Get your work checked by your instructor.

TASK-3:Testing V~I Characteristic of a diode On the completion of this exercises you shall be able to Find and plot the forward and reverse characteristic of a diode Find the V~I characteristics of a diode at a given current. To find V~I bias characteristics of a diode( In Forward Bias mode) 1. Modify the test circuit as shown in below figure. 2. Get the neatness of your wiring checked by your instructor 3. Switch ON PSU and increase the out put voltage of the PSU such that voltage varies from 0 to 5V in steps as given in table of the O & T sheet, at each step record the values of V and I 4. Switch off the PSU. For each set record values of V and I. 5. From the record readings in Table, plot a graph between V~I in graph sheet. 6. Get your Work checked by your instructor.

Figure 2.2 To find V~I bias characteristics of a diode( In Reverse Bias mode) 1.Modify the test circuit as shown in below figure. 2.Get the neatness of your wiring checked by your instructor 3.Switch ON PSU and increase the out put voltage of the PSU such that diode drop V1 varies from 0 to 12 V in steps as given in table of the O & T sheet at each step record the values of I. 4.Switch off the PSU. For each set, record the values of V and I. 5.From the record readings in Table, plot a graph between V~I in graph sheet. 6.Get your work checked by your instructor.
