Problem Statement

Interference reduction in FDD and TDD coexistence scenarios in WiMAX systems using Smart Antennas.

Introduction
This project deals with the Technology Coexistence scenarios in WiMAX systems. Currently, operators are implementing either FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) or TDD (Time Division Duplex) in WiMAX systems. Both of these technologies have certain advantages and limitations. Since different operators in adjacent bands might choose to use differing technologies, the coexistence of technologies is a fundamental concern, when transmitters and receivers are operating simultaneously in adjacent spectrum and in close proximity, the transmitters may cause significant interference to the receiving systems. When FDD and TDD coexist in a paired spectrum, there are possibilities that interference paths may not be mutual. This coexistence may cause unacceptable levels of inter-system interference, when the base stations and terminals have very different characteristics.

Figure 1: The Sources of adjacent channel interference for the various FDD/TDD coexistence scenarios.

Goals
Investigation of FDD and TDD coexistence in WiMAX systems (Mobile WiMAX, in particular) and using Smart Antenna Systems for mitigation of Inter-System interference in these coexistence scenarios.

Research plan

1. FDD and TDD implementation The first step shall be to carry out the thorough study of the FDD and TDD implementation in WiMAX Systems. This will be useful while simulating an FDD and TDD coexisting scenario and studying different interference paths

2. Smart Antenna Systems This step will involve the comprehensive study of Smart Antenna Systems enabling us to employ such a system for mitigation of interference in technology co-existing scenarios. 3. Simulation and Analysis An FDD and TDD coexistence scenario will be simulated in MATLAB and (Smart) Antenna discrimination and polarization techniques will be applied. The analysis of these techniques will be done in MATLAB which will show the extent of its usefulness in reducing inter-system interference.

Project Implementation Phases

The implementaion of this project was divided into four phases: Phase I "Implementation of PHY layer of WiMax on Matlab

Figure 2: Phy Layer of Wimax.

Phase Transmission and reception of signal using conventional antenna

II system

Both for FDD and TDD (two systems in close proximity) Also involves analysis of interference in the coexistence scenario.

Phase

III

Transmission and reception of signal using Smart Antennas and orthogonal polarization Schemes Both for FDD and TDD (two systems in close proximity) Also involves analysis and comparison of interference in the coexistence scenario with the system implemented on conventional antennas.

Phase

IV

Development of a Simulink Model to cross check the results and have a better understanding of the model.

Contributions to the field

Better implementation of wimax systems for mobile and fixed access will be possible by using FDD and TDD coexistence. Promotoing more efficiet spectrum utilization, first by placing financial value on spectral resources and secondly, by allowing operators to deploy more spectrally efficient technologies in order to reduce their spectral needs. Spectrum trading and liberization.
