Tutorial 1 1. Describe the purpose of vehicle structures. 2. List down types of vehicle structures and briefly describe each of them. 3. Explain three main requirements of a vehicle structure? 4. Briefly explain torsional and bending stiffness and how these two parameters are measured in a vehicle structure? 5. Propose four methods that can be used to increase torsional stiffness. 6. A vehicle has a mass of 1500kg and frontal impact crush strength of 250kN impacts a rigid barrier at 50km/h. Find, i) Crush deformation ii) Impact duration time iii) Average deceleration of the vehicle at the crush zone

Tutorial 2 1. Show that the torque generated by bump height is, T = K total * H/B where K is the torsional stiffness, H is the bump height and B is the wheel track. 2. Given a vehicle mass of 1400kg, wheel track of 1.2m, bump height of 0.2m and front to rear axle ratio of 60:40, determine the maximum torque and overall torsional stiffness when the left wheel lifts off. 3. There are four load cases that may cause failures in a vehicle structure. Describe each of them together with its equations.

Tutorial 3 1. What is the simple structural surface (SSS)? What are the expectations and limitation of the SSS approach? 2. List and draw SSS and non-SSS structural subassemblies. 3. Determine the edge loads of a simple box structure for bending and torsion cases. 4. Referring to Question 3, what would be the edge loads if:

i) The rear panel is missing ii) The top panel is missing Discuss your findings in related to Question 3. Tutorial 4 QUESTION 1 Figure 4a shows the half structure of a passenger saloon car subject to torsional loading. The loads from the rear suspension may be assumed to act directly into the side frame. Behind the rear seat there is an open space, i.e. no panel or cross-brace. Sketch free body diagrams for each of the simple structural surfaces showing the forces acting on each surface and write down the equations to determine the edge loads. Do not solve these equations but explain what checks you would make to ensure that the equations and values are correct?
