The teacher provides an update on what is happening in their third grade class. In math, students are learning to measure, calculate perimeter and area. They are also practicing addition, subtraction and beginning multiplication facts. In language arts, students are learning about fiction and nonfiction genres and reading strategies. They wrote letters from a turkey's perspective asking not to be eaten for Thanksgiving. The next science unit will cover light and sound. Social studies recently covered Michigan geography and mapmaking. The teacher reminds parents about upcoming school events like concerts, parties and breaks around the holidays.

Hello everyone. I had a wonderful time speaking with all of you at conferences. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know. In math we are on Unit 3. Unit 3 will cover measuring, perimeter and area. We are continuing to work on addition /subtraction facts if needed. Some of you also took home a multiplication mad minute pack to get a head start on learning multiplication facts. You will see more info on this after Christmas break. I have also given everyone extra challenge packs to work on when they finish their journal work. When your child turns this in they will earn a no math homework coupon for them to use whenever they wish! In addition, I have a fourth grade math pack that is available for parents. This is a take home pack to complete at home for an extra challenge. Students may bring the pack back to school for a no homework coupon when they are done. Many of these concepts may be new and will not be taught during the school day. Please let me know if you are interested in this. In language arts we are working on genres. What is the difference between fiction and nonfiction? Also, we are working our the CAF menu that I gave you at conferences. These are strategies that good readers use to read and comprehend. In writing we are working on writing opinion/persuasive writing. Today we wrote a letter from the perspective of a turkey asking the farmer not to eat us for Thanksgiving! Our next science unit will be light and sound. Students will discover how light travels, why it is needed as well as how sound is produced. In social studies we finished up our study of geography. We created a topography map of Michigan and then painted it. These will come home today! Many of you have donated clorax wipes. Thank you! With cold and flu season upon us it is important that we clean our desks often. If you would like to donate more wipes I would appreciate it. Please dont forget to have your child dress for the weather. Its time for coats, mittens, hats scarves, and boots. Also please put your childs name on their items so that all the lost mittens will find their way home!
