Introduction Background Information:Solution: in chemistry, a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of only one phase.

In such a mixture a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as solvent. The solvent does not dissolving. The solution more or less takes characteristics of the solvent including its phase, and the solvent is commonly major fraction of the mixture. Density: The density of a substance is mass per unit volume. The density of a solution is mass concentration of the component. Mass percent: The mass percent for a given element in a compound is the mass of the element in the compound as a percentage of the mass of the compound. In this experiment I have tried to find the density of alcohol in a given beverage. By taking a number of sample data I have made a graph between density and mass percent of solution. Procedure: 1. Three Erlenmeyer flask has been taken and their weight has been measured on electronic balance. 2. Filled one of the flasks with 25 ml of 70% by mass alcohol solution and measured the weight of the solution. 3. Mixed the solution with 25 ml of H20 to make it volume 50 ml and measured the weight of solution. 4. Calculate the mass percent of the solution by using the relation

5. Repeated above steps for 8 samples.

Sample Calculation:For 30ml of 70% by mass alcohol: Weight of 30ml of solution = 26.4494g Weight of the solute = 0.7 26.4494 = 18.5148g

Mass percent by using above relation = 39.86% Density of the solution = = 0.929

Summary of data:Volume of Mass of the 70% alcohol 70% solution(ml) alcohol solution(g) 25 22.0412 30 26.4494 32 28.2127 34 29.9760 36 31.7393 38 33.5026 40 35.2659 45 39.6741 Volume of water added(ml) 25 20 18 16 14 12 10 5 Mass percent of alcohol in the new solution(%) 32.80 39.86 42.73 45.64 48.57 51.54 54.59 62.17 Total Mass of volume of solution solution(ml) 50 50 50 50 50 50 50 50 47.0412 46.4494 46.2127 45.9760 45.7393 45.5026 45.2654 44.6741 Density of solution (g/ml) 0.941 0.929 0.924 0.919 0.914 0.910 0.905 0.893

Graph:-

density vs % mass
0.95 0.94 0.93 0.92 0.91 0.9 0.89 0.88 0.87 0.86 32.8 39.86 42.73 45.64 48.57 51.54 54.59 62.17 density

Conclusion:Mass percent vary linearly with density. Above graph shows the variation of mass percent of alcohol with density of solution. Calculation of mass % for the given beverage: For the beverage A: Mass of 50ml of the solution = 48.9713g Density = = 0.979g/ml

From the graph mass % = 11.5% For beverage B: Mass of 50ml of the solution = 45.9169g Density = 0.918g/ml From the graph mass% = 46% So we have got the mass % of the solution which was our objective.
