HSLB MISSION AND VISION

The Historical Society of Long Beach collects, preserves and presents local history. Through historical collections, exhibits, and programs we connect people to the past and to the place they live. We present an inclusive community narrative and help create greater understanding of our neighborhoods, the city and its place in the larger world. Through our programs, exhibitions, and collections we engage the community in thinking about what makes Long Beach unique.

PROGRAMS
Research Center
The HSLB makes available its documents, artifacts, photographs, maps and other materials to researchers and the general public. There is a $25 charge per day for non-members. Duplication fee (excluding photographs) is 50 cents per page.

HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS
The HSLBs historical collections trace the history of the city as it grew from a seaside resort, to a commercial and transportation center on the shoreline into a large industrial city with growing suburbs. Collections include: Long Beach Historical Newspaper Collection* PressTelegram, Independent, The Breaker, Argus, Shopping News, Marina News, Press, Sun and more* City Manager Files 1922-1953 Includes correspondence which runs the gamut from federal projects, war industries, annexation and responses to residents concerns Photographic Collections Over 30,000 images from local photographers Daugherty, Inman, McClain, Winstead Brothers, Kelch, Brown, and others LGBT Collections Materials from many organizations and individuals representing our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community North Long Beach Archive Includes photographs, ephemera, and artifacts Materials of Interest Ledgers, scrapbooks, organizational records, city directories, oral histories, artifacts, biographies, year books, blueprints, and more *Require advanced reservations. Exhibitions
Rotating exhibits are presented in the gallery on a variety of subjects. Past exhibits include: Rebuilding for the Future (New Deal in Long Beach), Suburban Architecture, North Long Beach, Coming Out in Long Beach, and two Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibits The Way We Worked and Produce for Victory.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS
Fulfilling our mission requires funding. We must pay for staff, building expenses, utilities, preservation materials such as archival files and boxes, office supplies, and exhibit and program costs. Memberships and donations represent nearly half our annual income. When you join the HSLB, you are ensuring that our history will never be lost; that the stories, photographs and documents of the citys leaders, residents, landmarks and events will always be safe and available to the public to learn from and enjoy.

Photographic Reproductions
A majority of our 30,000 photographic images are available for reproduction for your home or office dcor, reports, publication and other projects. Prices and fees vary by size and use.

Annual Historical Cemetery Tour


The popular tour tells engaging stories of the citys diverse residents delivered by costumed actors. Held on the Saturday before Halloween, its a great way to have fun and learn about the city and its colorful past.

MEMBER BENEFITS
Along with helping to preserve the past for the future, members enjoy benefits such as discounts on books and ticketed events including our cemetery tour, exhibit openings and programs. You are entitled to do research here at no cost and receive staff help to locate photographs and documents. You will receive electronic newsletters and postcards regarding upcoming events. You can vote for officers and will be invited to attend our annual meeting.

Long Beach Community Studies Conference


A partnership with Long Beach City Colleges Community Studies Program, the conference brings together community members and scholars who present and discuss the events that shaped the city, and the ways in which Long Beach influenced the state and the county.

First Fridays, Book Signings, and More


We host book signings by local authors and programs on a range of topics such as the 1933 earthquake, and the mayors public oral history series. First Friday programs include film screenings, live music, and slide shows on local topics.

Cambodian Community History & Archive Project (CamCHAP)


A partnership with CSUs Dominguez Hills and Long Beach, the project ensures Cambodian history in Long Beach is preserved and accessible. The project includes an archive*, book, scholarly articles presentations, and an interactive, bilingual website. www.camchap.org
